Transylvania has a slight reputation problem: everyone thinks of castles and skips the incredible mountains standing right behind them. Over 8 days, walking holidays in Romania like this one set the record straight, tracing limestone ridgelines through Piatra Craiului and the high alpine plateau of Bucegi, with wind-carved rock formations, river gorges crossed on metal ladders, and a legendary castle or two thrown in for good measure. We move between two mountain bases, Brașov and Sinaia, so the trails stay close and the packing stays simple. Bring good boots. Dracula can wait.

The adventure, day by day

Two mountain towns anchor this 8-day walking holiday through Romania's Southern Carpathians, keeping trail access easy without the hassle of packing every night. The first three nights unfold in medieval Brașov, positioned for the northern hikes through Piatra Craiului's limestone walls and the Seven Ladders Canyon. A cultural stop at Bran and Peleș Castles bridges the transition south to Sinaia, our base for the final four nights and the high alpine trails of Bucegi. Along the way, expect mountain cabin lunches, river gorges, and a finish among the wind-sculpted rock formations of the Bucegi plateau.

Day 1: Arrival
Brasov in Romania

Upon arrival, we land in the medieval heart of Transylvania and check into our hotel in Brașov. After settling in and shaking off the travel, we’re welcome to join the group for an optional dinner (at your own expense) to meet fellow hikers before heading into the mountains the next morning.

Accommodation: Hotel in Brașov

Day 2: Limestone ridges toward Cabana Curmătura
Meadow hike in Romania

We lace up for a rewarding climb toward the limestone walls of the Piatra Craiului massif. Shaded woodland gives way to Cabana Curmătura, a favorite haven for local mountaineers, where we rest and take in panoramic views of the surrounding peaks before retracing our steps back down.

Meals: Breakfast
Hiking: 10.8 km (6.7 mi)
Elevation: +670 m (+2,198 ft)
Accommodation: Hotel in Brașov

Day 3: Seven Ladders Canyon
Hikers cloudy Romania

We explore the Piatra Mare massif with a hike through the Seven Ladders Canyon, a narrow limestone gorge where secured metal ladders and walkways carry us alongside rushing waterfalls. It’s an exhilarating day that winds down with a peaceful walk back through pine forest.

Meals: Breakfast
Hiking: 10.1 km (6.3 mi)
Elevation: +510 m (+1,673 ft)
Accommodation: Hotel in Brașov

Day 4: Bran Castle, Peleș Castle, and the move to Sinaia
Bran castle at sunset

We trade high trails for a cultural detour, exploring the narrow stone passages of Bran Castle before visiting the Neo-Renaissance Peleș Castle. From there, we settle into our new base in the mountain resort of Sinaia.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel in Sinaia

Day 5: Cabana Poiana Izvoarelor and Gura Diham
Cabana Poiana in Romania

Back on the trails, we climb toward Cabana Poiana Izvoarelor in the Bucegi range, weaving through dense forest before opening onto striking views of the ridges above. We descend into the valley to close the day with a hearty, traditional lunch at the classic Gura Diham inn.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch
Hiking: 9 km (5.6 mi)
Elevation: +550 m (+1,804 ft)
Accommodation: Hotel in Sinaia

Day 6: Zănoaga Gorge
Gorge bridge in Romania

We head into the striking Zănoaga Gorge, tracking a rushing mountain river between towering rock faces and across wooden footbridges. The cool canyon microclimate and dramatic walls make for a completely different kind of hiking day, shaped entirely by water.

Meals: Breakfast
Hiking: 8.3 km (5.2 mi)
Elevation: +240 m (+787 ft)
Accommodation: Hotel in Sinaia

Day 7: Piatra Arsă, Heroes' Cross, and the Sphinx
Sphinx in Romania

We save the best for last, climbing to the high Bucegi plateau near Piatra Arsă and crossing wide-open alpine tundra. We stand at the edge of the sheer drop at Heroes’ Cross on Caraiman Peak, then visit the wind-sculpted Sphinx and Babele rock formations, two of the region’s most photographed natural landmarks.

Meals: Breakfast
Hiking: 11.2 km (7 mi)
Elevation: +610 m (+2,001 ft)
Accommodation: Hotel in Sinaia

Day 8: Departure
Goodbye Romania

After breakfast, we check out and catch our transfer back to Brașov, arriving in time for afternoon flights or onward travel, carrying Carpathian memories with us.

I wanted to say what a good guide Melchor was yesterday. He took very good care of us, especially me as I was struggling with the loose stones on the route and am afraid was very slow. He had such patience and found the best ways to help. Please tell him thank you.
