Make your way to Bodø, Norway. Check into the hotel and explore the town a bit if you have time. Get a good night’s rest as tomorrow the hiking begins!
Accommodation: Skagen Hotel Bodø or similar
In order to go on this Lofoten Islands hiking tour, great fitness is requested. Expect days of 3 to 7 hours on foot, with elevation gains ranging anywhere from 250 to 950 m (820-3,120 ft). Previous trekking or mountain hiking is essential, as are endurance and adaptability to face sometimes challenging conditions—whether it’s the weather, rugged trails, or simple accommodations.
The Lofoten Islands, much like the rest of Norway, are breathtakingly wild. Their beauty lies in the raw, untamed landscapes—but that also means hiking here can be tough. Trails are few and far between in the north, so most routes are off-trail, cutting across uneven rocky ground and through dense vegetation that often hides obstacles. This means difficulty isn’t measured only by distance or elevation gain, but by the character of the terrain itself.
Great fitness and familiarity with rugged mountain conditions will make all the difference—and ultimately reward you with the best possible experience. The climate can also add to the challenge: even in August, temperatures can swing from 15°C to 5°C, and when wind and rain roll in, progress can feel slower and more demanding. Come prepared for variety, and you’ll find the Lofoten hikes both exhilarating and unforgettable.
You’ll only be carrying a small backpack with your picnic and daily essentials.

The following items are required for this Lofoten islands self-guided hiking tour unless otherwise noted. When packing, think layered clothing systems that work together and can be easily added or removed.
You can either carry all your belongings with you, or you can opt for the Luggage Transfers Included option. Luggage transfers are available on 7 out of 10 days, limit is 26lbs/12kg—please stick to this as extra items are not easily stored by the team.
Avoid cotton or cycling-specific clothing. Synthetic fabrics dry quickly and perform well in active conditions. Merino wool is also an excellent option — it dries fast, is comfortable to wear, and naturally resists odors even after extended use.
Note that the beginning and end of the season (June and September) have a strong risk of snow and snowy conditions on the trail.
