Starting in Saint Gervais and ending in Chamonix, you’ll spend 8 days on a Tour du Mont Blanc trek. This carefully curated itinerary provides an immersive escapade along the iconic Alpine route, granting experiences of all the highlights, while being slightly shorter. With extensive trip notes, luggage transfers, and detailed maps, you'll have everything you need to navigate the trek with ease. You’ll stay in comfortable accommodations and savor delicious meals along the way, most of which are included in the price.

Day 1: Arrival in Saint Gervais, France

Your adventure begins in the charming village of Saint Gervais, a traditional Alpine gem. After arriving at Geneva Airport and a scenic transfer (not included), settle into your comfortable hotel in Saint Gervais—check-in is possible from 3pm onwards. If time allows, take a leisurely walk to soak in the picturesque surroundings.

Accommodation: 3-star hotel (Coeur des Neiges or similar)

Day 2: Saint Gervais to Les Chapieux

Prepare for a remarkable journey ahead of you as you embark on a short, 20-minute transfer from Saint Gervais to Notre Dame de la Gorge (included). From there, ascend over the Col du Bonhomme and the Col de la Croix du Bonhomme, treated to stunning panoramic vistas along the way. Traverse the picturesque Chapieux valley, surrounded by the magnificent Aiguille des Glaciers.

If lodging in Les Chapieux is unavailable, accommodations will be arranged in Bourg St. Maurice instead, either in a 2-star half-board hotel or a 3-star hotel with breakfast only, depending on availability. A public shuttle departs Les Chapieux at 5pm sharp (€8 payable on site) for the transfer. During low season (before June 10th and after September 10th), a private round-trip transfer is required at an additional cost of €235 (Day 2 evening + Day 3 morning).

Day 3: Les Chapieux to Courmayeur
An Italian Alpine town of Courmayeur with a medieval church.

From Ville des Glaciers, begin the hike with a 5 km (3 mi) walk, or in summer take a short public shuttle (5–10 minutes, about €4 payable on site). Cross the Col de la Seigne into Italy and enjoy breathtaking views, including the famous Grandes Jorasses, the Aiguilles of Peuterey, and Mont Blanc of Courmayeur. The day ends with a descent into Val Ferret, followed by a bus transfer from La Cantine de la Visaille to Courmayeur (6€ payable on site).

*In case you end up staying in Bourg St. Maurice, there’s a public shuttle to Ville des Glaciers (€8 to pay on the spot), between 6:45 am to 6:55am. If you go during low season, transfer option is listed under Day 2 (so €235 round trip for Day 2 evening + Day 3 morning).

Also note that from June 15-30 and September 1-15, there’s a risk of snow, and some buses don’t run—you’ll have to use a taxi. From Les Chapieux to Ville des Glaciers (possible to walk, +5 km) amounts to circa €120 for 1-3 people, and from Cantine de Visailles to Courmayeur it’s around €120, for 1-3 people.

From Courmayeur, you have a transfer by bus (not included, pay on the spot) to Val Ferret. From here, you’ll reach the Refuge Elena, a great spot for a break. Today’s journey takes you across the magnificent Grand Col Ferret, leading to the charming village of La Fouly in Switzerland. Marvel at the exceptional views of the Combins massif and the Italian side of Mont Blanc. Enjoy a comfortable transfer by public bus (not included) to Champex, a Swiss village nestled around a beautiful lake.

Day 5: Champex (Val d’Arpette) – La Forclaz – Trient

Today you start hiking directly from your hotel and pass through small alpine hamlets until climbing up to the highest point of the TMB—over the Fenêtre d’Arpette (2,750 m/9,022 ft)! Savor breathtaking views while you go down alongside the Trient glacier and descend directly to your lodging in an authentic mountain lodge in a charming alpine village.

Today you will cross the Col de la Balme, entering back into France with fantastic views of the Mont Blanc and Aiguille Verte. Descend into the picturesque village of Argentière, surrounded by awe-inspiring mountain vistas.

Day 7: Argentière to Chamonix

Prepare for a day of breathtaking beauty as you traverse the magnificent Balcon des Aiguilles Rouges and climb to Lac Blanc. Take in the awe-inspiring scenery, including Aiguille Verte, Les Drus, La Mer de Glace, Aiguilles de Chamonix, Mont Blanc du Tacul, Aiguille du Goûter, and the majestic Mont Blanc itself. Descend to Chamonix, either by Le Praz or by cableway at La Flégère (transfers not included), or choose to take a bus from Argentière to Chamonix (transfers not included) if you prefer to skip the day of hiking.

Here’s the suggested plan, but you can tailor it to your preferances:

    • Day 1 — Take the iconic cable car of the Aiguille du Midi and experience the famous “step into the void”. Make sure to book your Aiguille du Midi date and time in advance using the code in your voucher on this website (book your spot at least a few weeks in advance). Feel free to explore Chamonix at your own pace and spend the afternoon in the fabulous QC Terme spa (entrance included).
    • Day 2 — Today, hop aboard the traditional Montenvers train for an unforgettable journey above the stunning Sea of Ice. From there, a gondola takes you to the Ice Cave, where you can venture into the heart of the glacier for a truly memorable experience. You can also visit the Glaciorium to explore the history and evolution of the Sea of Ice. To round out your visit, enjoy the comfort of the on-site restaurants or the legendary Montenvers Hotel, which offers breathtaking views of the iconic Drus.
    • Day 3 — Departure after breakfast.

Please note that securing lodging can be particularly difficult during the Mont Blanc Marathon and the Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc events. Check their official websites for updated dates — the Mont-Blanc Marathon (June 25–28, 2026) and the UTMB World Series Finals (August 24–30, 2026).

For those who want a comprehensive TMB experience, this 12-day version will do it. Covering more places and offering a longer total distance, this version provides a more in-depth experience of the Mont Blanc region. Everything, except for length, remains very similar in terms of inclusions, but this tour goes the extra mile, including a memorable night at a mountain hut and a leisure day in Chamonix for added relaxation.

Day 1: Les Houches

Begin your journey in the charming village of Les Houches. After arriving at Geneva Airport, transfer to the village. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the opportunity for a leisurely walk.

Day 2: Les Houches to Les Contamines

Begin your trek in the charming village of Les Houches, where a cable car to Bellevue (ticket not included) provides a convenient start by bypassing the initial ascent, making for a gentler first day. The trail winds through serene forests, offering breathtaking views of the Bionnassay Valley, picturesque alpine hamlets, and the majestic Mont Blanc, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Alps’ foothills.

Along the way, the imposing Dôme du Goûter and Aiguille de Bionnassay, divided by a striking glacier, command your attention. The journey continues with an ascent over the Col de Tricot, followed by a steep but scenic descent featuring a series of switchbacks that lead to the Chalet de Miage. The day ends with another descent into the enchanting, traditional village of Les Contamines.

Embark on one of the most scenic sections of the tour, ascending to the pass of Chécroui before descending into the charming town of Courmayeur. Marvel at the magnificent views throughout the day, with the option to walk or take the cable car.*

Note that from June 15-30 and September 1-15, there’s a risk of snow, and some buses don’t run—you’ll have to use a taxi. From Cantine de Visailles to Courmayeur it’s around €120, for 1-3 people if wanting to shorten this day’s hike.

You’ll stay at 3-star hotels in Saint Gervais, Courmayeur, Champex, and Chamonix. In Argentière, you can expect a 2-star hotel, and in Les Chapieux and Trient a mountain lodge hotel. Most of the time, you’ll have ensuite bathrooms, but they cannot be guaranteed, and there will be no reduction if the room doesn’t have an ensuite bathroom.

You can find the preferred accommodations in the day-by-day itinerary. If these aren’t available, your tour organizer will find a substitute.

Single occupancy is not available in Les Chapieux. You can add the single occupancy room to your booking at checkout.

12-day itinerary

During your 12-day adventure, you’ll be staying at 3-star hotels in Les Houches, Courmayeur, La Fouly, Champex, and Chamonix. In Les Contamines, a 4-star hotel will be your base for the night, and in Les Chapieux and Trient a mountain lodge hotel. One night will be spent in a shared dormitory in Elisabetta Refuge—private rooms aren’t available for the night, and the facilities are simple here, sometimes rustic, with shared dormitories and communal bathrooms. Most of the time, you’ll have ensuite bathrooms, but they cannot be guaranteed, and there will be no reduction if the room doesn’t have an ensuite bathroom.

Single occupancy is available on 8 nights—Les Houches, Contamines, Courmayeur, La Fouly, Champex, Argentiere, and 2 nights in Chamonix. You can add the single occupancy room to your booking at checkout.

The adventure was everything I had hoped for. They built trails a little differently in Europe than at home here in the United States. It was nice meeting others from different cultures and countries around the world. I was saddened by seeing the numbering of retreating glaciers on the Mont Blanc Massif. It was a bucket list item of mine to circumnavigate the roof of Europe. I'm still absorbing the entire trip and accomplishment.

The adventure was thrilling; it was a challenging but rewarding hike. It may have been helpful to have a rest day built in but there was some hike days that ended earlier so that almost gave us a feeling of a rest day. Amazing adventure

PROs: - we had good weather and not so many people on the trails - we had very good hikes with great views - at the end the two nights in the same, nice hotel (Hotel du Clocher, we could deposit our not needed luggage during the hikes here, too) CONs: - we were sick for two days with stomach issues (most probably from Elisabetta), we had to skip the hikes, rest and use the public transfer -> in Switzerland it was easy and we could follow UTMB live in Champex and in Trient

We loved hiking the trail! We used AllTrails cause the app from grand angle didn’t work.. or we just didn’t know how to.. not sure. We meet some lovely people at the huts though. Scenery was magnificent!

Great tour and well worth the cost. The luggage transfer was error free. The provided map was critical to the success of the hike especially the audio alert telling us we’re off trail. Being a self-guided tour, it would very helpful if the description of the days trail was more detailed. The current description is too brief and should include trail conditions that the hiker should be aware prior beginning their hike so they can decide which route to take. For example the Argentiére - Chamonix section has two trail options, one has moderately difficult multiple ladders to climb and that’s not noted in the days trail description. Also the Champex -Trent section has two trail options with little to no description of the trails. The more difficult trail does not mention the trail down from the high pass has is steep and littered with loose rock. The steep trail and loose rock creates a dangerous situation for hikers lower on the trail. A safety helmet should be recommended for this section. The last item that would help future hikers is upon arriving to Les Chapieux, the description should clearly say, hikers staying at La Nova Inn “don’t take the bus down to Bourg-Saint Marie”. We had no cell service nor GPS to guide us. The address we saw was Les Chapieux 73700 Bourg Saint Marie lead us to believe our lodging was down in the city of Bourg Saint Marie. We took the bus to the city where we then got cell service that informed us our lodging was back up the mountain. Had to hire a taxi for €70 to get back up the mountain. We were later told this confusion has happened to others too.

It would have been nice to have better writeups for some sections. The Champieux to Courmayeur section was assumed to have to bus sections, we ran/ hiked the whole thing but the provided writeup have nothing about the first or last 10ish miles.

    Here’s the suggested plan, but you can tailor it to your preferances:

      • Day 1 — Take the iconic cable car of the Aiguille du Midi and experience the famous “step into the void”. Make sure to book your Aiguille du Midi date and time in advance using the code in your voucher on this website (book your spot at least a few weeks in advance). Feel free to explore Chamonix at your own pace and spend the afternoon in the fabulous QC Terme spa (entrance included).
      • Day 2 — Today, hop aboard the traditional Montenvers train for an unforgettable journey above the stunning Sea of Ice. From there, a gondola takes you to the Ice Cave, where you can venture into the heart of the glacier for a truly memorable experience. You can also visit the Glaciorium to explore the history and evolution of the Sea of Ice. To round out your visit, enjoy the comfort of the on-site restaurants or the legendary Montenvers Hotel, which offers breathtaking views of the iconic Drus.
      • Day 3 — Departure after breakfast.

  • Even though Tour du Mont Blanc is not technically difficult, it is generally recommended for those with at least an extensive experience of longer day hikes on mountain trails and great fitness. You can expect up to 1,200 m (3,940 ft) of daily ascent and hiking up to 15 km (10 miles) per day 6 or 10 consecutive days, for up to 9 hours a day. Keep in mind that hiking can be made more difficult because of changing weather.

    Since this is a self-guided tour, you will be able to take many breaks and hike at your own pace. Due to some more exposed sections, the tour is not recommended for those with severe fear of heights.

  • One of the best things about this Tour du Mont Blanc self-guided hiking trip is that luggage transport is organized during the entire trip. You’ll have access to your luggage in the evenings, except for the night spent at Elisabetta refuge (if you choose the 12-day itinerary). Keep in mind that your luggage (a travel bag or a small suitcase) may not exceed 15kg (33lbs).

    Min. age requirements:

      • If you are older than 18, you’re good to go.
      • Minors younger than 18 may be permitted to join the hike on a case-by-case basis, but must be in the presence of a parent or legal guardian.

  • The price for these Tour du Mont Blanc self-guided tours is based on twin-share rooms, but a single occupancy room can be arranged at an additional fee. You can add it to your booking at checkout.

    For the 8-day itinerary, a single occupancy room is not available in Les Chapieux. For the 12-day itinerary, ingle occupancy is available on 8 nights—Les Houches, Contamines, Courmayeur, La Fouly, Champex, Argentiere, and 2 nights in Chamonix.

  • To get to Saint Gervais or Le Houches, most people fly into Geneva International Airport, which is around 1 to 2 hours away.
