Mount Tarn Sea-to-Summit Hike: Full-Day Tour in Patagonia

1 day | Moderate to Challenging | 5.00
From $400 ()

Just outside Punta Arenas, at the southern edge of the world, the mountains rise straight out of the sea. We start this day hike on a pebbled beach beside the Strait of Magellan and climb through lush coastal forest toward windswept Mount Tarn, tracing some of the same wild terrain Charles Darwin once explored on the voyage of the HMS Beagle. Fresh local snacks and a picnic lunch fuel the climb, with wide-open panoramas the whole way up. The real reward comes after: a local restaurant set in a historic house, where we sit down to an honest Patagonian feast.

Adventure Highlights

  • Feel the remoteness of wild Patagonia: Climb from a pebbled beach through dripping coastal rainforest into the swirling wind of the high Andean desert near the summit, a landscape shift most single-day hikes can't offer
  • Follow Darwin's footsteps: Follow the same coastline the naturalist explored during the voyage of the HMS Beagle, and hear how this stretch of Patagonia helped shape "On the Origin of Species"
  • End the day at a historic ranch house: After the descent, sit down to a traditional Patagonian meal with local beer or Carmenere wine, served by a family who's worked this land for generations

The adventure, day by day

We head south from Punta Arenas to where Patagonia's mountains tumble straight into the ocean and the road simply stops. From sea level, we climb 14 km (8.7 mi) up steep, forested slopes, mud, roots, rock, and wind, along a wild, little-traveled route that retraces Darwin's path up Mount Tarn. We pause for fresh snacks and a picnic lunch, but every view is earned. Near the 825-meter (2,707 ft) summit, swirling winds open onto panoramas of Isla Dawson, the Darwin Range, and wild valleys beyond. After descending, we recharge at a historic-house restaurant over a hearty Patagonian meal before heading back to Punta Arenas.

Day 1: Sea-to-summit hike and Patagonian feast
Hiking in Patagonian Andes, Chile

This full-day hike climbs from a pebbled beach on the Strait of Magellan to the 825-meter (2,707 ft) summit of windswept Mount Tarn, on the Brunswick Peninsula about 45 minutes south of Punta Arenas. We climb 14 km (8.7 mi) through lush coastal forest, then break out into the swirling wind and dry air of the high Andean desert near the top, with wide-open panoramas over Isla Dawson, the Darwin Mountain Range, and the untouched valleys of the Brunswick Peninsula. Partway up, we stop for a picnic beside a mountain stream. Afterward, we head to a local restaurant in a historic house for an honest Patagonian feast. A private guide, private transportation, snacks, a picnic lunch, drinks, and entrance fees are all included.

Manuel
A fourth-generation Patagonian, Manuel has been drawn to the mountains for as long as he can remember. After studying adventure tourism in Punta Arenas, he spent eight years guiding hikes in Torres del Paine and Bernardo O'Higgins National Parks. More recently, he's started guiding in Canada during the off-season, working as an apprentice hiking guide with the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides and as an interpretive specialist with the Interpretive Guides Association. Manuel is passionate about geology, paleoanthropology, and adventure, and off the trail, you'll usually find him reading about mountaineering history or playing guitar.

Jamie
Born in Alberta, Canada, Jamie fell in love with nature and conservation at a young age. She studied biology with a minor in history before building a career as a natural history interpreter and documentary filmmaker, producing the environmental series Sustainable Me. She later moved to Patagonia to pursue that love of nature firsthand, and has since become a Magallanica at heart, picking up the local accent and slang along the way. Jamie hopes that helping people fall in love with Patagonia's stories and landscapes will inspire them to help protect this wild region too.

We had an amazing day with Manuel on the sea-to-summit Mount Tarn hike! From the beach of the Strait of Magellan, to the sub-Antarctic forest and the windswept summit with a 360 degree view – this hike had it all. Manuel is an extremely experienced guide with deep knowledge of the area. He took great care of us. He picked us up at our hotel, drove us to the trailhead while sharing the history and the geography of Punta Arenas and Mount Tarn, provided delicious snacks and lunch before, during, and after the hike, and made sure that we were comfortable while hiking the steep and often tricky terrain. We navigated forested slopes, fascinating peat bogs, lagunitas, snow fields, and volcanic scree on this diverse hike. We were super comfortable having Manuel as our guide on this challenging route, once trekked by Charles Darwin himself! We finished our long (9 hour) hiking day with a nice dinner in town with Manuel and Jamie. A top-notch experience we will never forget!
For the best experience on this hike, please do come prepared! Sturdy hiking boots are a must, and knee-high gaiters are a great idea during the wet season (we did this hike in November), as the trail is muddy much of the way. Be ready for steep inclines, tree roots, using trees as handholds, and navigating through brush and wet boggy terrain. The view from the top is worth it!
Thank you again, Manuel and Jamie, for this unforgettable experience! You are awesome!

Jaime was super knowledgeable and very friendly. From the time we met her until the time she dropped us off she was friendly, helpful and a wealth of information. She knew all the facts and made it interesting as opposed to just a regurgitation of information. I would highly recommend Jaime if you are looking to do a tour in Punta Arenas or venture to the great outdoors in the area.

When in Punta Arenas, you have to book a trip/hike with these guides. Manuel grew up hiking this area with his grandfather and his knowledge and stories of the area, along with the views, made this a very memorable trip. Icing on the cake — lunch at local restaurant was amazing!
