  • We head south from Punta Arenas to where Patagonia's mountains tumble straight into the ocean and the road simply stops. From sea level, we climb 14 km (8.7 mi) up steep, forested slopes, mud, roots, rock, and wind, along a wild, little-traveled route that retraces Darwin's path up Mount Tarn. We pause for fresh snacks and a picnic lunch, but every view is earned. Near the 825-meter (2,707 ft) summit, swirling winds open onto panoramas of Isla Dawson, the Darwin Range, and wild valleys beyond. After descending, we recharge at a historic-house restaurant over a hearty Patagonian meal before heading back to Punta Arenas.

    • This full-day hike climbs from a pebbled beach on the Strait of Magellan to the 825-meter (2,707 ft) summit of windswept Mount Tarn, on the Brunswick Peninsula about 45 minutes south of Punta Arenas. We climb 14 km (8.7 mi) through lush coastal forest, then break out into the swirling wind and dry air of the high Andean desert near the top, with wide-open panoramas over Isla Dawson, the Darwin Mountain Range, and the untouched valleys of the Brunswick Peninsula. Partway up, we stop for a picnic beside a mountain stream. Afterward, we head to a local restaurant in a historic house for an honest Patagonian feast. A private guide, private transportation, snacks, a picnic lunch, drinks, and entrance fees are all included.
