Most mountain bike weeks base you in one hotel and send you out on loops. This one takes you across an entire country. Over 10 days, we ride from the mountain town of Kolašin all the way to a ridge above the Bay of Kotor, with the Adriatic glittering below. In between come the Komovi peaks, the forests of Biogradska Gora, the wild border country of the Accursed Mountains, the huge grassy plateau of Sinjajevina, and Durmitor. Full-suspension e-MTBs keep the long climbs enjoyable, and lunch is often homemade cheese and warm bread at a shepherd’s summer village.

  • Mountain traditions, fully supported: Lunch is homemade cheese, fresh bread, and warm pies at shepherds’ summer villages, nights are spent in 3- and 4-star hotels, and your luggage is waiting when you roll in

The adventure, day by day

We spend the first four nights in Kolašin, riding Komovi, Biogradska Gora, and the remote Accursed Mountains before pedalling the whole way to Žabljak across the Sinjajevina plateau, our longest stage at around 70 km (43 mi). A rafting day on the Tara gives the legs a rest, then Durmitor's Six Lakes route and a point-to-point stage past Piva Lake carry us towards the sea. The last ride climbs the Vrmac ridge above Kotor Bay, followed by time in Kotor Old Town. Typical days cover 40 to 50 km (25-31 mi) on gravel and mountain roads, with singletrack always optional.

Day 1: Arrival in Kolašin
Arrival in Kolašin — Mountain Biking in Kolašin to Kotor Bay | Montenegro

Fly into Podgorica, Tivat, or Tirana, where your pickup is waiting. From there it’s a transfer up to Kolašin, the mountain town that serves as our base for the first half of the trip. Check into the 4-star Bianca Resort & Spa and take some time to settle in before we all meet up. Together we’ll get the bikes ready, sort out saddle height and any other adjustments, run through your gear, and talk over what’s coming in the days ahead. Dinner at the hotel wraps up the evening.

Meals: Dinner
Accommodation: 4-star Bianca Resort & Spa, Kolašin

Day 2: Komovi to Bjelasica via Ljubaštica, Stavna, and Ključ
Komovi to Bjelasica via Ljubaštica, Stavna, and Ključ — Mountain Biking in Kolašin to Kotor Bay | Montenegro

After breakfast we transfer to Ljubaštica and get rolling on our first ride. The route heads towards the sharp peaks of the Komovi Mountains and the summer settlement of Stavna, then carries on through remote terrain towards Bjelasica. Most of it follows gravel and old mountain roads, which makes it a good way to get a feel for the e-MTBs, and there’s optional natural singletrack if you want something more technical. We carry lunch boxes and pick a good spot in the mountains to stop and eat. From around Ključ, a long descent takes us all the way back into Kolašin.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch box, dinner
Distance: ~45 km (28 mi)
Elevation: +1,300 m (+4,265 ft)
Accommodation: Bianca Resort & Spa, Kolašin

Day 3: Biogradska Gora National Park and Bjelasica
Biogradska Gora National Park and Bjelasica — Mountain Biking in Kolašin to Kotor Bay | Montenegro

A short transfer of about 30 minutes after breakfast brings us to Biogradsko Lake, right in the heart of Biogradska Gora National Park. We start riding from the water’s edge, surrounded by one of Montenegro’s finest forests, before climbing up onto the open plateaus of Bjelasica. Gravel and mountain roads make up most of the day, with several singletrack options we can add depending on how the group is riding and what the trails are like. Lunch is the highlight: a traditional katun stop for homemade cheese and dairy, pies, fresh bread, vegetables, potatoes, and locally prepared meat. Then we ride back to Kolašin.

Meals: Breakfast, traditional mountain lunch, dinner
Distance: ~50 km (31 mi)
Elevation: +1,200 to 1,400 m (+3,937 to 4,593 ft)
Accommodation: Bianca Resort & Spa, Kolašin

Day 4: The Accursed Mountains
The Accursed Mountains — Mountain Biking in Kolašin to Kotor Bay | Montenegro

After breakfast, a transfer of about an hour brings us to the Accursed Mountains, or Prokletije, right where Montenegro, Kosovo, and Albania meet. This is the wildest corner of the whole trip. We ride mostly gravel mountain roads through remote valleys and wide-open highland terrain, with optional natural singletrack for anyone who wants a bit more bite. Today isn’t about technical riding, it’s about poking around a border region almost nobody gets to see by bike, with long views out to the surrounding peaks and one of the least-developed mountain areas in the Balkans. We carry lunch boxes and eat somewhere with a view, then head back to Kolašin once the ride is done.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch box, dinner
Terrain: Gravel mountain roads and optional singletrack
Accommodation: 4-star Bianca Resort & Spa, Kolašin

Day 5: Kolašin to Žabljak across Sinjajevina
Kolašin to Žabljak across Sinjajevina — Mountain Biking in Kolašin to Kotor Bay | Montenegro

Today the trip turns properly point-to-point. We check out after breakfast, hand our bags to the support vehicle, and cover the entire distance to our next hotel by bike. The route crosses the vast Sinjajevina plateau, one of the most striking high-mountain landscapes in Montenegro: rolling grasslands, remote gravel roads, shepherd settlements, and long stretches with almost nothing built on them. At roughly 70 km (43 mi), this is the longest stage of the trip, though the e-MTBs mean we can take it in rather than race it. We stop at a traditional summer village for lunch, then keep rolling across the plateau towards Žabljak and Durmitor National Park, where our luggage is already waiting.

Meals: Breakfast, traditional mountain lunch, dinner
Distance: ~70 km (43 mi)
Terrain: Predominantly gravel and remote mountain roads
Accommodation: 3-star Hotel Zlatni Bor, Žabljak

Day 6: Rest day and Tara Canyon rafting
Rest day and Tara Canyon rafting — Mountain Biking in Kolašin to Kotor Bay | Montenegro

Four riding days in a row is enough for anyone’s legs, so today the bikes stay behind. We head to the Tara River instead for a day of rafting through the Tara Canyon, following clear water between forested canyon walls with a few lively whitewater sections thrown in. Still outdoors, still moving, just a completely different way to see this part of the country. Afterwards we drive back to Žabljak, and the rest of the afternoon is yours to put your feet up and recover before dinner at the hotel.

Meals: Breakfast, dinner
Accommodation: 3-star Hotel Zlatni Bor, Žabljak

Day 7: Durmitor National Park: Six Lakes tour
Durmitor National Park: Six Lakes tour — Mountain Biking in Kolašin to Kotor Bay | Montenegro

Legs refreshed after the river, we swing back onto the bikes for a day in Durmitor National Park. The Six Lakes route links a string of mountain lakes and landscapes around the Durmitor massif, and instead of one big climb followed by one big descent, it’s a varied cross-country ride over forest roads, gravel tracks, and open mountain terrain. Your guide shapes it to the group: stay mostly on gravel and mountain roads if that’s your speed, or add natural singletrack if you’re after something more technical. We roll back into Žabljak afterward for our last evening in the Durmitor region, with dinner at the hotel.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch box, dinner
Terrain: Gravel, forest roads, and optional singletrack
Accommodation: Hotel Zlatni Bor, Žabljak

Day 8: Around Durmitor to Piva Lake
Around Durmitor to Piva Lake — Mountain Biking in Kolašin to Kotor Bay | Montenegro

We check out of Žabljak and keep the journey moving. Today’s route loops around the Durmitor massif, rolling through mountains, valleys, forests, and quiet back roads before dropping towards the striking Piva Lake region. It’s another point-to-point stage, and a fresh angle on northern Montenegro: this is where the high mountains start handing over to the Adriatic. Our luggage rides in the support vehicle, so we carry only what we need for the day. Once the ride wraps up, we meet our transfer and continue to the coast, checking into Hotel Palma in Tivat with the sea right outside. Dinner is at the hotel.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch box, dinner
Terrain: Mountain roads, gravel, and optional trail sections
Accommodation: 4-star Hotel Palma, Tivat

Day 9: Vrmac ridge and Kotor Bay
Vrmac ridge and Kotor Bay — Mountain Biking in Kolašin to Kotor Bay | Montenegro

Our last day on the bikes looks nothing like the first. We ride Vrmac, the ridge that separates the Bay of Kotor from Tivat Bay, climbing old mountain and military roads high above the coastline. Views open up over the bay, the limestone peaks around it, and the Adriatic below. The terrain mixes gravel, old roads, and natural singletrack, so we can shape the ride around how technical the group wants to get and how much energy is left in everyone’s legs. Once we finish, we head into Kotor Old Town for a wander through the historic center, then gather for our final evening together beside the sea.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch box, dinner
Terrain: Gravel, old mountain roads, and optional singletrack
Accommodation: 4-star Hotel Palma, Tivat

Day 10: Departure
Departure — Mountain Biking in Kolašin to Kotor Bay | Montenegro

Breakfast together, and then it’s time to say goodbye. Airport transfers are arranged around individual flight times, with drop-offs to Tivat, Podgorica, or Tirana Airport.

Meals: Breakfast

Dear Guiding Team and Program Managers in Montenegro,
I would like to express my deep gratitude for an unforgettable riding experience.
We were very impressed by the wonderful and challenging routes. The bikes you provided were simply excellent, allowing us to tackle the terrain and enjoy every moment in the best and safest way possible.
Beyond the professional riding, your caring and the wonderful treatment you gave us along the way are what made this journey truly special. It is evident that much thought was put into every detail, and the high-quality hotels we stayed at provided the perfect, relaxing rest at the end of each intense day.

  • In order to join this Montenegro e-bike tour, good fitness is required as well as basic mountain biking experience. The most you’ll ride within a day is up to 70 km (43 mi), with up to 1,400 m (4,593 ft) of elevation gain.

Typical riding days are shorter, around 40-50 km (25-31 mi) and 4 to 6 hours on the bike. Full-suspension e-MTBs take a lot of the sting out of the climbing, but you should still be ready for several days of riding back to back. You’ll want to be comfortable on gravel roads, uneven and loose surfaces, and moderate climbs and descents. Most of the route follows gravel and mountain roads, with singletrack kept optional so your guides can adjust the technical side to the group. To prepare, your guides recommend regular cycling for at least 6 to 8 weeks before the trip, including some 2 to 4-hour rides; time on gravel or easy MTB trails helps far more than training only on pavement. Luggage travels in the support vehicle, so you ride with just a small pack.

  • Riding gear:

      • Helmet — mandatory whenever riding; bring your own or use one provided as part of the tour
      • Cycling gloves
      • Cycling or sports shoes suitable for flat pedals
      • Your own pedals if you prefer them (your guides can fit them to the provided bikes)
      • Knee protection — optional, recommended if you plan to ride the more technical singletrack options
      • Small riding backpack
      • Water bottle or hydration system with at least 1.5 L capacity

    Clothing:

      • Cycling clothing for several consecutive riding days
      • Waterproof jacket
      • Warm layer for the high mountains
      • Sunglasses

    Other:

      • Sunscreen
      • Personal toiletries and any personal medication
      • Camera — optional, but recommended

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.

  • You can book this tour any time from May through October, but our favorite months are June through September. That’s when the high mountain trails are usually snow-free and the katuns are open for lunch, so it’s the perfect window for riding across Bjelasica, Sinjajevina, Durmitor, and the Accursed Mountains. May and October can be lovely too, just a bit less predictable. If snow or rain hits the higher ground, the guides will tweak the route so you still get a great ride.

  • Group sizes and pricing:

      • For this Montenegro e-bike tour, the usual client-to-guide ratio is 7:1.
      • The maximum group size is set at 14 participants. A second guide joins for larger groups.
      • E-mountain biking can be arranged for larger groups, contact us to make arrangements.

      • If your group has participants under the age of 18, contact us prior to booking to make arrangements.
  • The price for this Montenegro e-bike tour is based on twin-share rooms, but a single occupancy room can be arranged at an additional fee. You can add it to your booking at checkout.

  • The starting point of your Montenegro e-bike tour is Kolašin, Montenegro. To get there, most people fly into Podgorica Airport (TGD) or Tivat Airport (TIV), and Tirana Airport (TIA) in neighboring Albania also works well.

Airport pickup and drop-off from any of these three airports is included, so once your flights are booked the transfer to Kolašin is arranged for you. You will meet your guide at the hotel in Kolašin after check-in on Day 1, when the bikes are set up and the days ahead are run through together. On the final day, transfers back to Tivat, Podgorica, or Tirana are organized around your flight times.
