Blue Ice: Glacier Hike & Ice Climbing on Sólheimajökull, Iceland

1 day | Moderate | 5.00
From $219 ()

Deep inside Sólheimajökull’s crevasses, the ice turns a striking, otherworldly blue—and this is the one Iceland glacier tour where you don’t just look at it, you climb it. After hiking across crevasses and ice ridges on this glacier tongue in South Iceland, we stop at a wall of that same blue ice and hand you crampons and an axe—your guide teaches proper technique on the spot, so no climbing experience is needed. It’s the rare day trip that turns “look at that glacier” into “I climbed that glacier,” and it works whether you drive yourself down or join us straight from Reykjavík.

Adventure Highlights

  • Ice climbing, taught from scratch: Your guide teaches proper ice-axe and crampon technique before you climb an ice wall yourself, no prior climbing experience needed
  • A glacier that changes by the season: Sólheimajökull’s crevasses, ridges, and moulins shift year to year, so your guide’s read of the ice is what keeps the day exciting and safe
  • Two ways to get there: Drive yourself to the glacier, or join a full-day trip from Reykjavík with stops at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss along the way

The adventure, day by day

Meet us directly at Sólheimajökull's parking lot and skip the transfer—this is the tour for anyone with their own wheels who'd rather spend the extra time on the ice than in a van. After a short walk up to the glacier's edge, we fit you with crampons, a helmet, and an ice axe, and get straight into technique before climbing a wall of the glacier's deep blue ice. The whole outing runs about 5.5 hours, with roughly 3 hours spent climbing and exploring on the ice itself. It's the most efficient way to do this tour—ideal if you're road-tripping the South Coast and want to fit ice climbing into a fuller day of sightseeing on your own schedule.

Meet your guide at the Sólheimajökull parking lot at 12:30, where they will fit you with crampons, an ice axe, a helmet, and a harness, and runs through a full safety briefing before anyone sets foot on the ice. From there, we hike out across the glacier for about three hours, winding through a landscape of crevasses, ice ridges, and moulins with streaks of deep blue ice throughout. Partway through, we stop at a section of ice wall, where your guide teaches proper ice-axe and crampon technique before you climb it yourself, roped in and coached the whole way. We’re back at the parking lot roughly five and a half hours after starting.

Duration: 5.5 hours
Meeting point: Sólheimajökull glacier parking lot (self-drive)
Hiking: approx. 8 km (5 mi)
Min. age: 14 (with adult supervision)

We pick you up from your Reykjavík hotel at 8 am and handle the rest, turning ice climbing into the centerpiece of a full South Coast day. En route, we stop at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, two of Iceland's most photographed waterfalls, before continuing on to Sólheimajökull. There, we fit you with crampons and an axe and spend around 3 hours on the glacier, climbing a wall of striking blue ice. Including the drive and waterfall stops, the day runs about 13 hours door to door. It's the easiest way to see this stretch of the South Coast without renting a car—built for anyone who'd rather sit back and let the day come together for them.

Such a unique experience! I would honestly recommend glacier climbing to everyone — it was one of those moments that feels really unforgettable. Daniel was a great guide, Super funny & relaxed and made us feel safe the whole time. The group was small, which made the experience even more personal. Overall, just do it! You will not regret it:)

We had an amazing glacier climbing experience! The scenery was breathtaking, and the whole tour was very well organized. A special thank you to Daniel, who made the experience even better. He was friendly, funny, and full of positive energy throughout the hike. The only thing I disagree with is his assessment of my climbing skills. He gave me a 6/10, but luckily I get the final say in this review — and Daniel gets a well-deserved 10/10 from me! Highly recommended!

Daniel was a phenomenal guide! He provided Great instructions, had a great sense of humour and shared good tips for restaurants! Great intro to the ice climbing experience! Felt actually more involved than the simple walking tours on the glacier – very happy they provide this option as many other tours are just simple walking on the surface.

Thank you Steve, our guide, for this amazing experience! Ice climbing is truly something to do. We learned a lot, faced an exciting challenge but at the same time felt safe and at ease.
If you’re ready to sweat for a rewarding and otherworldly experience, you should definitely do it (especially with Steve )!

  • Both versions include the exact same glacier hike and ice-climbing session at Sólheimajökull—about three hours on the ice, full gear and instruction either way. The only real difference is how you get there:

      • From Sólheimajökull’s — Guide meets you directly at the glacier parking lot. Runs about 5.5 hours total. Best if you already have a rental car and want a shorter day.
      • From Reykjavík — Picks you up at your hotel at 8 am and drives you down, with stops at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss on the way. Runs about 13 hours total. Best if you’re not driving yourself or want to see more of South Iceland along the way.

  • No experience or personal gear is necessary—crampons, an ice axe, a helmet, and a harness are all provided and fitted by your guide, included in the tour price.

Crampons matter here specifically because you’re not just hiking on ice, you’re climbing it—they’re metal spikes that attach to your boots and dig into the ice for grip, both on the glacier hike and on the ice wall. • If you’d rather not drive to, the “From Reykjavík” pickup version of this tour collects you directly from your hotel in Reykjavík at 8 am and takes care of the return trip, with stops at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss along the way.
