If you ski, you’ve probably seen the photos: deep powder in the trees, small ski towns buried in snow. That’s the Powder Highway, and this trip is how we ski it. Over 12 days, we drive a big loop from Calgary through the Rockies and across the Purcell, Selkirk, and Monashee ranges, stopping at spots like Fernie, Whitewater, Revelstoke, and Rogers Pass. Most days, we ride the lifts up and then head past the ropes to the stashes only a few locals know about. Evenings are for good food, local craft beer, and figuring out where tomorrow’s best snow is.

The adventure, day by day

This 12-day ski safari follows the famous Powder Highway through the snow belts of western Canada, from the Rockies to the Purcell, Selkirk, and Monashee ranges. Starting and ending in Calgary, we drive a big loop through British Columbia, skiing resorts and backcountry zones along the way, including Fernie, Kimberley, Whitewater, Revelstoke, and Rogers Pass. Most days mix lift access with backcountry touring, guided by an ACMG-certified guide who knows where the best snow hides. The trip is designed for intermediate to advanced ski tourers and splitboarders. Hotels and lodges, breakfasts, ground transportation, avalanche safety training, and avalanche gear rentals are all included.

Day 1: Calgary to Fernie
Fernie street in Canada

Arrive in Calgary, where your guide will pick everyone up at the airport. From the prairies, we hit the Powder Highway and head southwest into the Canadian Rockies, aiming for Fernie, a small ski town in BC’s Elk Valley. We check in and get a good night’s sleep before the skiing begins.

Accommodation: Hotel or lodge

Day 2: Backcountry pow in Fernie
Two ski tourers climb a steep snow slope toward rocky, snow-covered peaks under hazy blue sky in British Columbia

We kick things off at Fernie Alpine Resort. A few laps warm up the legs, then we ride to the top and head past the ropes into the backcountry of the Lizard Range, to powder stashes usually known only to a few locals.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel or lodge

Day 3: Skiing Kimberley
Skier in a blue jacket descends a powder slope, leaving winding tracks below snowy rocky peaks in British Columbia

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel or lodge

Day 4: Touring at Kootenay Pass
Three mountaineers in harnesses and helmets stand on a snow ridge facing a rocky, snow-covered peak in British Columbia

Day 5: Skiing Whitewater
Skier in helmet and goggles carving through deep powder beside snow-covered evergreen trees in British Columbia

Next up is Whitewater, a ski hill in the Selkirk Mountains just outside Nelson, well known for its deep, dry snow and great tree skiing. We ski the resort and the surrounding backcountry, depending on conditions.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel or lodge

Day 6: Rest day and scenic drive to Revelstoke

I’ve use Monte (head guide) for 2 seasons now for backcountry ski-touring. He’s very experienced, inspires confidence, and ensures you develop your skills as you go while feeling safe. He’s also highly capable of finding fine powder lines, great views, and good company to ski with. Can’t recommend him enough.

I have been on a number of backcountry ski/ski mountaineering trips with Monte & the team over the past several years. These trips have included avalanche safety training (level 2), and multiple multi-day hut trips in some expert level terrain (such as the Tantalus range near Squamish, BC).

On all the trips Monte and his guides have displayed excellent professionalism, tuition, and decision making in the mountains.

In mixed ability groups, Monte will tailor the trip to all ability/fitness levels, ensuring everyone has a great time. Monte has also pushed me to tackle steeper terrain than I was used to skiing in the backcountry (both on the up and down).

I would not hesitate to go on more trips in Monte in future.

My trip had a bad start due to lost baggage and flight cancelation, but Monte had done a great job to find me some skis and arrange the situation. His cheerful welcome quickly makes me forget about those flight travel issues.

I was guided by Chris who has made the ski experience memorable. Beyond the professional aspect of mountain guiding, getting to know Chris, listening his stories and benefiting from his incredible experience was truly inspirational.
