The Abbots Way: Hiking Through History From Emilia Romagna to Tuscany

The powerful abbots of medieval Italy needed a safe route to Rome and the Vatican, so they built one through the mountains. For eight days, we’ll follow their strategic path from Bobbio—once home to Europe’s greatest monastery library—through the wild Apennines to Pontremoli. Each day flows between navigating rugged terrain, discovering remote chapels, and resting in villages that still feel medieval. Along the way, local stories and castle ruins will remind us how these remote trails once connected Europe’s greatest centers of learning and power. On the Via degli Abati, every step echoes with thirteen centuries of hidden history.

Itinerary

Discover the mountain paths that shaped medieval Europe! We’ll hike the Abbots Way through Italy's Apennines, following trails where monks, merchants, and pilgrims once made their essential journey to Rome. Each path reveals a new layer of history—from ancient stone roads to hilltop castles. Our expert guide shares stories of the powerful Bobbio monastery while leading us through beech forests and remote villages where traditional hospitality still thrives. With comfortable local lodgings and select meals included along the way, we’ll focus on taking in the views that medieval travelers couldn't stop to admire. Ready to walk the path that shaped European history?

  • Benvenuti! We’ll meet up in Bobbio and start our pilgrimage with a scenic and moderately challenging route that crosses the Apennine Mountains in northern Italy. Starting in Bobbio, we’ll follow a mix of dirt paths, forest roads, and ancient mule tracks, often winding through dense forests of beech, chestnut, and oak trees. The terrain is generally undulating, with some steeper ascents and descents that can test our stamina.

We’ll pass by several historical and natural points of interest, such as the stunning views of the Trebbia River valley and the characteristic mountain villages scattered along the way. As we progress towards Coli, the trail becomes more rugged, with some sections requiring careful attention, especially during wet or slippery conditions. The elevation gain in certain areas can be considerable, with rocky outcrops and loose gravel making certain stretches more technically demanding. However, we’ll be rewarded with panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
