Silfra Scuba Diving Tour: Between Two Tectonic Plates, Iceland

1 day | Challenging | 5.00
From $297 ()

Few dive sites on the planet look like this one. Silfra sits inside Þingvellir National Park, in the rift valley where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are slowly pulling apart, and the water filling that crack has spent decades being filtered through porous lava rock before it ever reaches you. The result is visibility that stretches past 100 m (328 ft)—water so clear it barely feels real. We’ll suit you up in a dry suit, walk you through everything you need to know, and guide you through Silfra’s four distinct sections, from the narrow Deep Crack to the open, otherworldly blue of the Lagoon.

Adventure Highlights

  • Dive between continents: Stand where the North American and Eurasian plates meet, then dive straight through the gap between them
  • Unreal underwater visibility: Filtered through lava rock for decades before it reaches Silfra, the glacial meltwater here offers visibility over 100 m (328 ft)
  • Worry-free logistics: Your certified guide takes care of the dry suit fitting, the safety briefing, and the gear, so all you have to do is dive

The adventure, day by day

This half-day scuba diving tour takes you into the Silfra fissure, inside Þingvellir National Park, for two dives of about 30 minutes each. We'll pick you up from your Reykjavík hotel (or meet you at the Silfra car park if you're driving yourself), then get you fitted into a dry suit before a full safety briefing covering signals, national park rules, and how the suit works. From there, we'll guide you down through Silfra's four sections—the narrow Deep Crack, the widening Hall, the Cathedral at 18 m (59 ft), and the open Lagoon—before warming up with hot chocolate and cookies. The whole outing, pickup and drop-off included, runs 4-6 hours.

Day 1: Scuba diving in Silfra fissure

Arrive at Þingvellir National Park, where your local guide welcomes you and gives a full safety briefing. After suiting up in the gear provided, we make our way to the Silfra fissure—a stunning crack between tectonic plates filled with ultra-clear glacier water. We’ll enter the water and descend into the bright blue depths, gliding through narrow passages and wide chambers that open beneath lava rocks. Expect mesmerizing views, unusual rock formations, and that unique feeling of floating between two continents. Once we’re out of the water, share hot drinks and photos before heading back, buzzing from a day you’ll never forget!

Duration: 4-6 hours, including pickup and drop-off in Reykjavík
Meeting point: Your Reykjavík hotel, or the Silfra car park in Þingvellir National Park if meeting on location
What’s included: Certified PADI dive guide, all dive and safety equipment, Silfra admission fee, round-trip transfer, hot chocolate and cookies

Honestly, was unsure what to expect, but this exceeded my expectations. From what we did, to the views, to it not being too cold, to our incredible tour guide Nail (nael – Argentina). Definitely recommend!

Great tour

Even though it was quite busy, the crew made everything go smoothly. Once in the water you don’t even notice anyone else except for your own group. It was a great experience and I definitely recommend it. My thanks to the crew and Fernande our guide 🙂

      • All required dive equipment, including a dry suit, mask, fins, and weights
      • All required safety equipment
      • A thorough pre-dive briefing covering diving procedures, signals, national park rules, and how to use your dry suit
      • The Silfra admission fee
      • Hot chocolate and cookies after your dive

    Add-ons (pricing shown at checkout):

      • Pickup from select Reykjavik locations

    Not included:

      • Transportation to Iceland
      • Accommodation
      • Meals, aside from the hot chocolate and cookies included above
      • Insurance — recommended, available to add at checkout
      • Guide gratuities — optional
      • Anything not mentioned in the “Included” section above
  • In order to join this scuba diving tour, excellent fitness and prior dry suit diving experience are required—this is a demanding, technical dive, not a beginner activity. You’ll need an Open Water diver certification or higher, plus either a dry suit certification or at least 10 logged dry suit dives within the last two years. You’ll also need to be able to swim independently without a lifejacket and be comfortable in the water, and you can’t take part if you’re pregnant.

Before booking, you’ll be asked to complete a diving medical questionnaire; if any of your answers flag a concern, you’ll need written approval from a doctor. Because your dry suit needs to fit properly, there are also height (150-200 cm / 4’11”-6’7″) and weight (45-120 kg / 99-265 lbs) limits to keep in mind.

  • Yes—your guides require an Open Water diver certification or higher to join this tour, along with dry suit-specific experience: either a dry suit certification, or written proof of at least 10 logged dry suit dives completed within the last two years. A general Open Water certification without recent dry suit experience isn’t enough on its own, and there’s no beginner or discover-diving option on this particular tour.

  • Here’s a list of the equipment you need to bring:

      • Proof of dry suit certification, or written proof of at least 10 logged dry suit dives within the last two years
      • Proof of Open Water diver certification or higher
      • Thermal underwear (top and bottom) to wear under your dry suit
      • Warm woolen socks
      • A full change of clothes for after the dive
      • A towel
      • A signed physician’s approval, if flagged during the required medical questionnaire
      • A spare set of clothes—recommended, since even the best dry suit can’t be 100% guaranteed to stay completely dry
      • A waterproof camera, if you’d like one—optional

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.

  • Group sizes and pricing:

      • For this diving tour, the usual client-to-guide ratio is 3:1.
      • It takes a minimum of 2 persons for this tour to operate. The maximum group size is set at 3 participants.

Silfra fissure diving tours can be arranged for larger groups. Contact us to make arrangements.

    Min. age requirements:

      • If you are older than 18, you’re good to go.
  • The starting point of your Silfra scuba diving tour is the Silfra car park in Þingvellir National Park, about a 45-minute drive from Reykjavík. You can get there by rental car, shuttle, or public transport.

You have two ways to join: meet on location at 10 am, or add Reykjavík pickup and depart at 8:30 am (possible to add to your booking at an additional cost at checkout).

Either way, plan to arrive 15 minutes before your tour starts. Your guide meets groups at a smaller car park about 400 meters back along the road from the main Silfra car park—look for the dive vans. Þingvellir National Park charges a parking fee of 500 ISK, payable on-site and not included in the tour price.

  • We highly recommend that you cover all your bases with insurance. To make your booking and traveling experience as carefree as possible, you’ll be offered to simply insure your trip with Redpoint at checkout.
