Arctic Norway Hiking Week: Explore Lyngen

Few places in the world still look like this. The Lyngen Alps rise straight out of the Arctic Ocean in northern Norway—jagged, 1,000+ (3,280-ft) meter peaks plunging directly into the deep blue fjords, raw and barely touched. We’ve been guiding and living here for decades, and we built our lodge right on the edge of the water on the island of Uløya so guests can experience this place properly: not from a hotel in town, but from inside it. A week with us means six hiking days across the archipelago and into Reisa National Park, full-board meals built around local Arctic ingredients, a sauna overlooking the fjord, and mornings that start with a packed lunch and a thermos before heading into the mountains.

Adventure Highlights

  • Arctic peaks, right from the doorstep: Based at a local guide's lodge on Uløya, every hike starts from the fjord's edge and climbs into wild, high-alpine terrain most visitors to Norway never reach
  • Six days, six completely different routes: From coastal walks along Uløya's rocky shoreline to the 1,000 m (3,280 ft) ridge of Saeteraksla and the forests of Reisa National Park, no two days look alike
  • A lodge worth coming back for: Full-board dinners featuring reindeer, fresh Arctic fish, and homemade desserts, with a private sauna and a panoramic glass wall facing the fjord

The adventure, day by day

Seven nights based at the Lyngen Lodge on the island of Uløya, with six full guided hiking days across the Lyngen archipelago. Our week covers terrain from rocky coastal paths and fjord-facing ridgelines to high mountain cirques and Norway's national park interior. Full-board accommodation, airport transfers, and sea fishing are all included—this is as close to a complete Arctic week as it gets!

Day 1: Arrival in Tromsø
sunset lodge norway

Arrive in Tromsø, where your guides will pick you up and transfer you to the lodge on Uløya. Check-in is from 4 pm. Once everyone has settled in, we gather for a short briefing about the week ahead before sitting down together for dinner—a first taste of the lodge’s kitchen and a chance to get to know the group.

Meals: Dinner
Accommodation: Lyngen Lodge, Uløya

Day 2: Arontinden summit hike
arontinden lyngen view

We head out for our first hike of the week, climbing to the summit of Arontinden at 563 m (1,847 ft). The route offers spectacular panoramic views in every direction—across the small outer islands, down the length of Lyngen Fjord, and out toward the open ocean. Wildlife sightings along the way are common: moose, reindeer, eagles, and various Arctic birds all call this island home. Duration is roughly 4 to 6 hours depending on pace.

Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner
Hiking: approx. 4–6 hrs
Elevation: +563 m (+1,847 ft)
Accommodation: Lyngen Lodge, Uløya

Day 3: Saeteraksla and the Isvannet cirque
top saeteraksla

Today is the longest day of the week. We climb to Saeteraksla at 1,000 m (3,280 ft), a full-day ascent with one of the most dramatic views on the island—a sheer 1,000 m (3,280 ft) drop to the Rotsund Strait far below, and a direct look down into the unique glacial cirque of Isvannet mountain lake. The wild, high-mountain environment up here feels genuinely untouched. Plan for 6 to 9 hours on the trail.

Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner
Hiking: approx. 6–9 hrs
Elevation: +1,000 m (+3,280 ft)
Accommodation: Lyngen Lodge, Uløya

Day 4: Sea fishing afternoon
lodge view norway

A rest from the mountains—today is reserved for sea fishing in the waters around Uløya. Equipment is provided, and the guides have a boat available for those with the required license. For anyone who’d rather stay on land or explore independently, an alternative excursion to the Skjervøy area can be arranged. The afternoon is relaxed and social, and whatever we catch may well end up on the dinner table.

Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner
Accommodation: Lyngen Lodge, Uløya

Day 5: Reisa National Park and Mollisfossen
reisa park

We drive out to Reisa National Park for the day—a protected nature reserve in the Troms region with some of the most lavish, unspoiled terrain in northern Norway. The hike around Unna takes 3 to 4 hours and moves through an area rich with eagles, moose, and reindeer. Optionally, a boat trip along the Reisa River leads to Mollisfossen, one of the largest waterfalls in Europe at 269 m (883 ft)—and extraordinarily, it’s possible to walk behind the falling water. The boat trip carries an additional cost of NOK 1,000 and adds several hours to the day, making it a full 8-hour excursion from the lodge.

Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner
Hiking: 3–4 hrs (without boat trip)
Accommodation: Lyngen Lodge, Uløya

Day 6: Uløya's coastal walk
two hikers cote dazur

The guides call this stretch “the Côte d’Azur of Uløya”—a picturesque coastal route along the island’s more rugged western edge, passing through rock towers, narrow ridges, and along stretches of rocky beach. It’s one of the more visually varied walks of the week, with the sea on one side and the mountains rising on the other. The base route takes 3 to 4 hours, but can be extended to a full 6 to 8 hours for those who want more.

Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner
Hiking: 3–4 hrs (extendable to 6–8 hrs)
Accommodation: Lyngen Lodge, Uløya

Day 7: Valhalla Valley on Kågen Island
valhalla lyngen

Our final hiking day takes us across to the neighboring island of Kågen for a hike into the Valhalla Valley, climbing to around 450 m (1,476 ft). The valley is framed by a monumental rock wall and centered on a high mountain lake—the kind of landscape that doesn’t leave you quickly. With reindeer often grazing nearby and birds of prey overhead, it’s a fitting way to close out the week. Allow 3 to 4 hours for the hike itself, or 5 to 6 hours door to door from the lodge.

Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner
Hiking: 3–4 hrs (5–6 hrs from the lodge)
Elevation: +450 m (+1,476 ft)
Accommodation: Lyngen Lodge, Uløya

Day 8: Departure

Check-out is at 10 am. Your guides will arrange the transfer back to Tromsø.

Our stay was absolutely amazing. The lodge is cozy, comfortable, and has everything you need. Plans were flexible and adapted daily to the weather and guests’ preferences, with every detail handled smoothly, especially logistics. The crew is fantastic—always helpful and smiling—and our guides were very reliable and knowledgeable about the area, making each outing adventurous and safe. Food was also great, with something special each night.

A special mention to Artur, the owner, whose energy, stories, and passion made the experience truly unique. Absolutely recommended—even though part of me wishes it could stay a secret!

Just finished up an amazing week with the Lyngen Outdoor Center on lovely Uloya Island. Artur and staff have created a comfortable, friendly, clean, spacious, and inviting space and it was a pleasure to have the opportunity to be a part of it all! The overall vibe was relaxed, friendly, and accommodating, and there was great attention paid to the details of the place and its function as a gateway to adventure and exploration of some truly remarkable and picturesque terrain.

Not sure where to start, but for sure, the food was AMAZING – abundant, delicious, fresh, and prepared with attention and intention. Could not have asked for more! The accommodations were clean, comfortable, and well maintained. Amazing ocean and mountain views from almost every location at the lodge, it was a joy to wake up each morning simply to take in the views.
