Most people come to Valencia for the beach and the paella. We’d argue there’s a better version of the trip. On this 7-day guided Valencia hiking tour, we cover six of the most spectacular corners of the Valencian Community: red sandstone ridges with coastal views, a 2,000-year-old Roman aqueduct, suspension bridges above the Turia gorge, medieval castle ruins with sweeping mountain panoramas, and the thermal canyon pools of Montanejos to round out the week. We also have all transport handled and comfy hotels with breakfasts along the way. The coast can wait.

The adventure, day by day

This guided Valencia hiking tour covers 7 days and six entirely different landscapes of the Valencian interior, starting in the red sandstone ridges of Sierra Calderona and finishing in the thermal canyon gorges of the Mijares River. Along the way, we hike a 2,000-year-old Roman aqueduct carved into limestone cliffs, cross the famous suspension bridges above the Turia gorge, and climb to the ruins of Castillo de Castro with panoramic views over the Sierra d'Espadà. Transport between all trailheads, 3-4 star hotels with buffet breakfast, and an expert hiking guide included, so all that’s left to do is to join in.

Day 1: El Garbí, gateway to Sierra Calderona
El Garbi

After pickup from Valencia or the airport, we head straight into the Sierra Calderona to open the week right. The route winds through aromatic Mediterranean scrub and striking red sandstone formations unique to this part of Spain. By the time we reach the summit of El Garbí, the entire Valencian coastal plain is laid out below us, with the sea catching light on the horizon. A strong first day and a very good first view.

Accommodation: 3-4 star hotel
Hiking: 12.5 km (7.8 mi)
Elevation: +550 m (+1,800 ft)

Day 2: Peña Cortada, a walk through time
Roman aqueduct

We head to the village of Chelva, where history and landscape become inseparable. Today’s hike follows the path of a Roman aqueduct carved directly into the limestone cliff face, a feat of engineering that somehow still stands two thousand years on. We walk through narrow hand-hewn tunnels and across a massive stone bridge, surrounded throughout by the quiet, rugged beauty of the inland hills. Not many hikes in the world come with a backdrop like this.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: 3-4 star hotel
Hiking: 13 km (8.1 mi)
Elevation: +400 m (+1,310 ft)

Day 3: The hanging bridges of Chulilla
Chulilla bridge hikers

The Turia River has spent millennia carving a deep limestone gorge at Chulilla, and today we walk straight into it. The trail drops to the riverbed where large suspension bridges sway above the flowing water and vertical cliffs rise dramatically on both sides. We follow the canyon path to the Charco Azul, a serene pool where the water stills into a deep, photogenic blue-green. One of the most striking and photographed landscapes in the entire Valencian Community, and for good reason.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: 3-4 star hotel
Hiking: 15 km (9.3 mi)
Elevation: +350 m (+1,150 ft)

Day 4: Castillo de Castro and into the mountains
Castro trail

Starting in Alfondeguilla, we climb toward the ruins of Castillo de Castro, an ancient hilltop fortress perched at a natural vantage point with 360-degree views across the Sierra d’Espadà. The descent takes us through dense cork oak forests before we transfer deeper into the mountains to Montanejos, the thermal spa town that will serve as our base for the final stretch of the trip. Medieval ruins at the top, a warm welcome at the end.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: 3-4 star hotel in Montanejos
Hiking: 15 km (9.3 mi)
Elevation: +550 m (+1,800 ft)

Day 5: The high ridges of Alto Mijares
Alto Mijares region

Set deep within the Alto Mijares region, the Bojera trail offers a classic mountain experience well away from the coastal circuits. The route climbs steadily through the resilient flora of the Castellón mountains, with sharp ridge lines opening up views over deep river gorges far below. It’s a wilder, more isolated corner of the Valencian interior, the kind of landscape that rewards the effort of getting there.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: 3-4 star hotel in Montanejos
Hiking: 12 km (7.5 mi)
Elevation: +500 m (+1,640 ft)

Day 6: The narrow canyons of Estrechos
Mijares river canyon

The final full hiking day takes us into the Estrechos of the Mijares River, where the canyon walls close in and the water narrows dramatically between towering stone faces. This circular route stays close to the river throughout, before arriving at the natural thermal pools where the water holds a constant temperature year-round. A fittingly spectacular way to close out the week.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: 3-4 star hotel in Montanejos
Hiking: 11 km (6.8 mi)
Elevation: +450 m (+1,480 ft)

Day 7: Departure
Virgin plaza in Valencia

After breakfast, we transfer back to Valencia, marking the end of this hiking adventure. Airport drop-off is available for those flying back home.

Originally from Córdoba, Melchor has spent the past six years guiding across some of Europe's most varied mountain terrain, from the Sierra Nevada in the south to the high peaks of the Alps in the north. He knows the trails, the villages, and the viewpoints that don't make it onto maps, and brings a genuine understanding of the landscapes' history and traditions to every day on the trail. For the past two years he has been leading these Trentino itineraries specifically, and it shows.

I wanted to say what a good guide Melchor was yesterday. He took very good care of us, especially me as I was struggling with the loose stones on the route and am afraid was very slow. He had such patience and found the best ways to help.
