Get ready for six days of avalanche courses in the British Columbia’s Nelson! This AIARE 2 course is designed for skiers, riders and winter alpinists who travel regularly in avalanche terrain. The course will help experienced backcountry users gain new skills necessary to make safer decisions in unexpected and complicated situations. You’ll learn how to lead a small travel group, travel in challenging or complex avalanche terrain, or develop a travel plan without adequate resources. Commit yourself to the AIARE process and learn about gathering field obs, identifying terrain, planning tours, mitigating risk, and making safer decisions in the backcountry. This longer 6-day format course allows time to fully grasp the AIARE 2 curriculum and apply all the skills from the classroom in the field. A 3:1 student-instructor ratio ensures personalized learning, making this the best, most immersive AIARE 2 available! Some of the things you’ll learn about are gathering field obs, identifying terrain, planning tours, mitigating risk, and making safer decisions in the backcountry.
Once you meet with your guides, you will go through the curriculum and they will explain the schedule for the week. In the morning, head out for a day of classes and exercises in the field. You’ll spend your field days in the Kootenays, in the perfect combination between superlight fluffy Rockies Powder and Coastal snow. Wind is the exception rather than the normal conditions. These six days in the field will make sure you are prepared for any challenge in the mighty backcountry!
