Ski Touring & Big Mountain Adventures in Kazbegi, Georgia

The Caucasus rarely makes anyone’s list of great ski touring ranges, and that’s precisely why it’s worth going. Terrain here holds up against anything the Alps or the Rockies can offer, largely untouched and rarely skied by outsiders. Mount Kazbek, at 5,054 meters (16,581 ft), is the reason to start in Kazbegi: five days of guided ski touring build from moderate valley runs into quiet bowls, then onto alpine ridgelines with the mountain looming the whole way. Midway through, we skin up to a high mountain hut above 3,000 meters for a night that tends to become the trip’s defining memory, before dropping back down to a 4-star design hotel to recover properly. Local guides run the whole thing, adjusting the route daily so the terrain matches the group rather than the other way around.

Adventure Highlights

  • Touring that builds day by day: From warm-up runs near Stepantsminda to alpine ridgelines beneath Kazbek, each day steps up based on conditions and the group’s pace
  • A night above 3,000 m (9,845 ft), then back to comfort: An overnight at a high mountain hut, with a free afternoon to explore the terrain above it, followed by a return to the 4-star hotel back in Stepantsminda
  • More than just the skiing: A cultural stop at the Gergeti Trinity Church, and certified local guides who know this range as well as its history

The adventure, day by day

Seven days built around five days of guided ski touring in the Kazbegi region, based out of Stepantsminda beneath Mount Kazbek. The days build in steps — warm-up runs on moderate terrain, then deeper into wide valleys and quiet bowls, then alpine ridgelines with direct views of Kazbek. Partway through, you skin up to a high mountain hut above 3,000 meters for an overnight that's become a genuine highlight of the trip, with a free afternoon to explore the terrain above it. Your guides adapt the route daily based on conditions and group ability. There's also a cultural stop at the Gergeti Trinity Church, and evenings back at a 4-star design hotel with a pool and sauna to recover in.

Day 1: Arrival in Tbilisi and transfer to Stepantsminda

Fly into Tbilisi International Airport, where your guide meets you for the transfer to Stepantsminda, around two and a half hours by road. After checking in, there’s an evening briefing to run through the week ahead, a kit check to make sure everything’s in order for touring, and a welcome dinner to close out the day.

Accommodation: Rooms Hotel Kazbegi

Day 2: Warm-up touring

Elevation: +900–1,300 m (+2,950–4,270 ft)

Day 5: Ascent to the high mountain hut

Accommodation: Deka Alpine Hut (3,000 m / 9,845 ft)

Day 6: High-altitude day and return to Stepantsminda

  • Ski touring here in the Caucasus is real physical work. Expect around 6 active hours a day of skinning and skiing, several days in a row, with terrain that steps up as the week goes on—from moderate warm-up runs to alpine ridgelines.

The terrain rewards intermediate and expert ski tourers: flowing alpine lines, moderate couloirs, and high-altitude objectives, with the remoteness adding real weight to the days out. Your guides adapt the route daily based on conditions and how the group’s doing, but a solid baseline of touring fitness and experience is what separates a hard day from a great one.

  • There’s a bit more to it than the skiing. Kazbegi keeps the texture of an old Caucasus crossroads—traditional mountain villages, hearty local food, and a culture that doesn’t bend to the tourist trail.

On the final morning, there’s an optional stop at the Gergeti Trinity Church, one of Georgia’s most recognizable landmarks, perched above Stepantsminda with Kazbek behind it. Meals lean into traditional Georgian cooking throughout—khinkali, khachapuri, and hearty mountain fare back at the hotel—while the overnight at the high mountain hut on Day 5 is as much a cultural experience as a physical one, a taste of how climbers and skiers have used these mountains for generations. And your local guides, who know the range as well as its history, are with you the whole way.
