The adventure, day by day

This four-day guided sea kayaking expedition explores the Broken Group Islands within Pacific Rim National Park, paddling between sheltered beaches, intertidal pools, and old-growth shoreline. After a water taxi transfer from Ucluelet, we set up camp at one of the park's designated sites and spend three full days on the water, covering four to six hours of paddling daily depending on group ability and conditions. Evenings are spent around the campfire, sharing stories as the sun sets over the islands. Meals, camping gear, and a knowledgeable local guide are included throughout, making this a comfortable introduction to one of Vancouver Island's most remarkable paddling destinations.

Day 1: Paddling into the heart of the Broken Group
Introduction to kayaking

We meet at the Small Craft Harbour, where your guide briefs the group before boarding a water taxi bound for the Broken Group Islands, taking in the coastline along the way. Once dropped at one of the park’s sandy beaches, we unload and repack our gear into the kayaks, followed by a kayak orientation to get everyone comfortable before the first paddle. Around noon, we stop for a freshly prepared lunch, then continue paddling for the afternoon. Your guide selects one of the park’s seven designated campsites for the night, where we set up camp and settle in. Dinner is served once everyone has had a chance to rest, followed by a campfire to close out the first day.

Meals: Lunch, dinner
Kayaking: 4-6 hours
Accommodation: Tent camping at a designated Broken Group Islands campsite

Day 2: Full days on the water
Kayaking on blue water

Mornings start early, with breakfast ready by 7 am and plenty of time afterward to relax before setting out. Depending on weather and group preference, we may move to a new camp or stay put for the day, paddling out to explore the surrounding islands. Lunch is enjoyed on a different beach each day, with time built in to explore the area’s intertidal life and old-growth forest. We also visit sites once home to First Nations villages within the Broken Group, learning about the region’s history along the way. The day winds down back at camp with dinner and another evening by the fire.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Kayaking: 4-6 hours
Accommodation: Tent camping at a designated Broken Group Islands campsite

Day 3: Deeper into the islands
Returning from kayaking

Another early start with breakfast around 7 am sets the tone for a full day of paddling. Your guide continues to shape the route around the group’s pace and the day’s conditions, whether that means relocating camp or staying another night at the same site. We paddle to new stretches of the Broken Group, stopping for lunch on a fresh beach and continuing to explore the intertidal pools, forested shoreline, and historic First Nations village sites scattered throughout the park. The evening follows the same rhythm as the days before, with dinner and a campfire under the stars.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Kayaking: 4-6 hours
Accommodation: Tent camping at a designated Broken Group Islands campsite

Day 4: Last paddle and return to Ucluelet

On our final day, we spend the morning exploring more of the Broken Group Islands before breaking camp. Once the day’s paddling is done, a water taxi picks us up and brings the group back to Ucluelet, wrapping up four days spent among the islands.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch
Kayaking: 4-6 hours
