South of Punta Arenas, the road runs out at the Fin de Camino, the literal end of the highway on the South American continent. From there, we set off on foot along the beaches of the Strait of Magellan toward Faro San Isidro, the southernmost lighthouse on the continent. We walk beneath the canopy of temperate sub-Antarctic rainforest, watching for the dolphins, whales, and sea lions that live in these waters, before stopping for lunch at the base of the lighthouse hill. It’s an easygoing day with a big payoff: standing at the edge of the continent, looking out over waters explorers have crossed for centuries.

We’ll drive from Punta Arenas to the legendary 'Fin de Camino'—the literal end of the road in South America. Our hike takes us along quiet beaches of the Strait of Magellan, where you get uninterrupted views of Mount Tarn, Bahia el Aguila, and—if you’re lucky—passing wildlife like dolphins, whales, or sea lions. A stretch under temperate Sub-Antarctic rain forest leads us to our goal: the southernmost lighthouse on the continent, Faro San Isidro. After a lunch with a view, we head back to celebrate at the end of the trail before returning to Punta Arenas to enjoy local flavours at a restaurant in a historic house.

Hiking to the edge of the continent in Punta Arenas, Chile

We drive south from Punta Arenas to the Fin de Camino, the end of the road on the South American continent, to start this hike along the beaches of the Strait of Magellan. The trail leads through Reserva Nacional Magallanes and temperate sub-Antarctic rainforest to Faro San Isidro, the continent’s southernmost lighthouse, with a chance to spot dolphins, whales, or sea lions along the way. We stop for lunch at the base of the lighthouse hill before heading back to the Fin de Camino to celebrate, then return to Punta Arenas.
