Chamonix Freeride with Faction: A Week of Steep Skiing in France, Italy and Switzerland

Chamonix is where steep skiing was invented, and six days here puts you right in the middle of it. We ski five full days with IFMGA guides who work on a simple principle: menu, not mandate. Wherever the snow is best that morning, that’s where we go, even if it means dropping through the Mont Blanc tunnel into Italy for tree laps. You’ll be on a premium quiver, swapping skis as the terrain changes, with a media crew shooting the whole thing. This one’s for advanced skiers who already love steep, off-piste, glaciated ground and want a week of it.

Adventure Highlights

  • Three countries, one week: Nothing is locked in: if the snow is better through the Mont Blanc tunnel in Italy or over in Switzerland, that’s where we ski that morning
  • Big lines and the Vallée Blanche: This valley is stacked with serious descents, and the centerpiece is a long, committing glacier run past seracs and crevasse fields, skied with IFMGA guides who read this ice every day of the season
  • Faction ski quiver: A fitting clinic on day one, then unlimited access to top-of-the-line skis all week, so you swap onto the right pair for the snow every morning

The adventure, day by day

Six days, five of them skiing, built to get progressively bigger. We start in Chamonix with a strategy session, welcome kits, and a gear-fitting clinic to match you to the right skis. Day two is Les Grands Montets, dialing in gear and avalanche protocols on legendary steep terrain. Then the Vallée Blanche glacier, followed by a border-hop to Courmayeur for Italian tree skiing and powder laps. Day five is the wildcard: your guides pick the best snow anywhere in the tri-country area, and we finish with a farewell dinner. Morning laps in the valley before departures. A photo and video crew shoots throughout.

Day 1: Basecamp and the quiver match
Basecamp and the quiver match — Backcountry Skiing in Chamonix | France

Arrive in Chamonix and settle into basecamp under the Mont Blanc massif. Pick up your welcome kit, meet your IFMGA guides and the rest of the crew, then sit down for the strategy session where the week actually takes shape. Your guides read the forecast, the snowpack, and the wind, and sketch out where the good stuff is likely to be. This is a menu, not a mandate, so nothing gets locked in too early. After that comes the gear-fitting clinic: you’ll get matched to the right skis from the quiver, dial in boots and bindings, and walk out ready to ski hard tomorrow. Early night recommended.

Day 2: Les Grands Montets freeride mecca
Les Grands Montets freeride mecca — Backcountry Skiing in Chamonix | France

Time to find out what the skis can do. Les Grands Montets is the name that made Chamonix famous with freeriders, and we spend the day on its steep, open terrain getting everything dialed. Your guides run through avalanche protocols first, transceiver checks, spacing, and how the group moves together in big terrain, then we start linking laps. Expect lift-served steeps, pockets of untracked snow, and plenty of chances to test how your quiver match handles real conditions. The media crew is with us too, so this is where the first hero shots get captured. Ski hard, look good, get comfortable with the terrain ahead.

Day 3: The legendary Vallée Blanche
The legendary Vallée Blanche — Backcountry Skiing in Chamonix | France

The one everyone comes to Chamonix for. We ride up to navigate the Vallée Blanche, a glacier descent through seracs, crevasse fields, and some of the most photographed terrain in the Alps. Your guides pick the line based on what the glacier is doing that morning, and there’s room to push into more serious big-mountain skiing if the group is moving well. Between runs, the media team works on lifestyle content, so the day comes home with you in more than just memory. It’s long, it’s committing, and it’s the kind of skiing that recalibrates what you think a ski day can be.

Day 4: Courmayeur and the Italian powder mission
Courmayeur and the Italian powder mission — Backcountry Skiing in Chamonix | France

Today we cross a border underground. We load up and head through the Mont Blanc tunnel to Courmayeur, where the snow often sits deeper and the trees give us something Chamonix can’t. Expect world-class tree skiing and powder laps on the Italian side, with your guides picking lines that suit how the group is skiing by now. Swap onto a different pair from the quiver if the snow calls for it, then keep lapping while the light holds. Italy being Italy, the food and the coffee are part of the deal.

Day 5: The wildcard mission
The wildcard mission — Backcountry Skiing in Chamonix | France

This is the day the whole trip has been building toward. Menu, not a mandate: your IFMGA guides look at the snow, the wind, and the forecast across France, Italy, and Switzerland, then point us at whatever is skiing best that morning. Could be a big line, could be a quiet powder stash across another border. Whatever it is, the media crew is with us for the final action push, so you’ll come home with shots of your best skiing of the week. We finish with a farewell dinner and a proper debrief of everything we’ve skied.

Meals: Farewell dinner

Day 6: Final laps and departure
Final laps and departure — Backcountry Skiing in Chamonix | France

One more morning in the valley. We grab hot laps close to home in Chamonix, chasing whatever is still good and squeezing the last turns out of the trip before the clock runs out. Once we’re done, it’s back to base to hand in the skis and sort out your gear. From there, transfers head off toward the airport as departure times dictate. Plenty of time to trade photos, swap contacts, and start plotting what you’d ski next time you’re here.
