Itinerary

This epic 14-day bike tour will take us from Saigon to Bangkok, and we’ll see the best of three South East Asia’s countries: Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. When we’re not crossing mighty rivers, pedaling down scenic roads, and meeting friendly locals, we’ll be eating at floating markets and restaurants, taking in the stunning scenery, and riding next to beautiful Buddhist temples. At night, we’ll stay at comfy hotels and resorts, and by day, our experienced guides and a support van will provide all the info and comfort we might need. This amazing, fun-filled bike tour awaits—two wheels and a thirst for adventure is all that we need.

  • For starters, we’ll meet in our hotel in Saigon at 5:30 pm. The afternoon is free for wandering around town and exploring the sights and sounds of Ho Chi Minh. Later on, we’ll have dinner at one of Ho Chi Minh City’s finest restaurants where we’ll explore the amazing flavors of Vietnamese cuisine.

    Meals: Dinner
Accommodation: Northern Hotel / Nhat Ha L’Opera Hotel

Saigon or Ho chi Minh City
  • We leave the bustle of Saigon behind and drive into the heart of the Mekong Delta, where lush waterways and farmland replace city streets. Starting in Ben Tre, we ease into Vietnamese road rhythms before crossing the Ham Luong River by ferry and cycling through coconut groves, banana plantations, sugarcane fields, and small riverside villages. Narrow farm roads, quiet lanes, small bridges, and a second ferry across the wide Co Chien River lead us into Tra Vinh, a culturally rich city shaped by Vietnamese and Khmer influences.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
    Biking: 75 km (47 mi)
    Elevation: +475 m (1,558 ft), -481 m (1,578 ft)
    Accommodation: Ven Song Bungalow

Ba Om pond, Tra Vinh province
  • We depart Tra Vinh and cycle west across a fertile floodplain between the Co Chien and Hau Rivers, riding through an endless patchwork of rice paddies that explains why the Mekong Delta is known as Vietnam’s “rice bowl.” Along the way, we pass fruit orchards, villages, waterways, and numerous Khmer-style Buddhist temples that reflect centuries of Cambodian cultural influence. Nearing Can Tho, we avoid heavy city traffic with a short transfer before settling into the region’s largest and most vibrant delta city.

    Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
    Biking: 82 km (51 mi)

  • An early boat trip takes us to Cai Rang, the Mekong Delta’s largest floating market, where vendors trade goods from colorful boats piled high with produce. Back on land, we begin cycling along narrow rural roads toward Long Xuyen before transferring by vehicle to Chau Doc. En route, we stop at the Ba Chuc memorial, a sobering reminder of Cambodia’s recent history. We end the day in Chau Doc, a lively border town set along the Mekong River.

After completing border formalities, we continue to Phnom Penh, arriving in time for lunch. In the afternoon, we explore the city by rickshaw, visiting the Royal Palace and its ornate grounds. The remainder of the day (from circa 3 pm onwards) is free to explore further, relax, or visit museums at your own pace.

    Phnom Penh
  • We cycle out of Phnom Penh using a network of riverside routes and ferry crossings before reaching the countryside. Rural Cambodia unfolds as we ride through villages of stilt houses and farmland, welcomed by friendly locals. This plan preserves the spirit of the original itinerary while ensuring a seamless and enjoyable journey for everyone.

If interested in joining this tour, feel free to reach out prior to booking. To avoid the land border, a flight either to or from Bangkok to bypass the land crossing might be required—it will cost up to 200 USD per person.

  • On this Saigon to Bangkok cycling tour, you’ll cover the total cycling distance of 639 km (397 miles) over 10 cycling days, with an average distance of 64 km (40 mi) per day. The tour is suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. The trip is not too arduous, so riders with less experience are more than welcome. However, the fitter a person is, the more they will enjoy it.

The most you’ll cycle within a day is up to 82 km (51 mi) per day, with up to 504 m (1,654 ft) of elevation gain. You can find day-by-day distances and elevation changes in the itinerary.

No off-road riding experience is required, and the tour follows a combination of good condition tarmac roads to pot-holed or broken ones, as well as vehicle-width dirt paths. The guides are always there, and there is also a support truck, which is almost always available to help, except on parts of very narrow paths of the Vietnam Delta.

  • Biking conditions vary throughout the journey. Expect a mix of paved roads (in differing conditions), gravel and sandy country lanes, and vehicle-width dirt roads. While riding in Angkor, we’ll also enjoy some fun forest singletrack.

Most riding is on quiet countryside roads with low traffic, but we do regularly share the road with cars, motorbikes, and buses. A few main-road sections are unavoidable, particularly when entering or leaving towns and near popular sites.

Weather plays a role in the experience. During the dry season, roads in Vietnam and Cambodia can be dusty; after rain, some sections may become muddy. We generally ride rain or shine, but guides may adjust routes based on conditions or group comfort. Flexibility is part of the adventure.

  • Here’s a list of the equipment you need to bring:

      • Day pack large enough to carry all the items listed (around a 25-40L bag)
      • Helmet — mandatory (included if you rent a bike)
      • Bike — rental available upon checkout
      • Water bottle or hydration bladder (2L capacity)
      • Lightweight shoes suitable for biking
      • Comfortable biking clothes
      • Spare clothes
      • Waterproof rain jacket
      • Biking gloves
      • Sunhat
      • Toiletries (sunscreen, hand sanitizer, bug spray, toilet paper, etc.)
      • Sunglasses
      • Camera — optional (but recommended)
      • Spare tube and a bike pump – optional, but can come in handy

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.

You will receive a more detailed packing list upon booking.

  • Bringing or renting a bike

      • Bikes aren’t included in the price of the tour, but your guides offer bike rentals! You can either rent a mountain bike or an e-bike—add it at checkout.
      • But if you’d like to bring your own bike, you’re free to do so. Just make sure it is a mountain bike, preferably with front suspension in good mechanical order.

    Bike repairs

      • Basic spares and tools are carried by the guide and on the support vehicle, though spares are not guaranteed for every conceivable problem. Carrying a basic tool kit, a spare tube and a pump while riding is recommended.

    Safety

      • Wearing a helmet is required on all our biking adventures and is non negotiable. If you do not wear a helmet you will not be allowed to cycle.
