The adventure, day by day

Get ready for an 11-day coastal Thailand cycling tour that'll make your heart sing. When we’re not riding past golden beaches, through lush national parks, and alongside ancient temples, we’ll join in morning offerings to Buddhist monks and try our hand at traditional crafts. Everything else is sorted: comfy hotels and resorts, all your meals, an expert local guide, and a support van always nearby. All you need to bring is your sense of adventure and some cycling experience. This tour along Thailand's coast will fill your camera roll and your soul.

Day 1: Bangkok — Ampawa

We’ll kick off our Thai adventure by heading from Bangkok to the vibrant Damnoen Saduak Floating Market before cruising through canals on a longtail boat. Then it’s time to hop on our bikes for our first ride through coconut plantations. We’ll stop on the way to visit unique temples like Wat Bang Kung, which is held up by a massive banyan tree. In the evening, we’ll relax at a cozy wooden Thai house by the river.

Day 2: Ampawa — Kaeng Krachan

We’ll wake up early to make a traditional offering to monks passing by in boats, then transfer to Thailand’s largest national park Kaeng Krachan. After a scenic ride along the vast reservoir, we head inland for some quiet country roads and gentle hills. We’ll park our bikes at our beautiful riverside resort and enjoy a swim or massage before dinner.

Day 3: Kaeng Krachan — Hua Hin

Today we’ll pedal through a patchwork of mango orchards, sugar cane fields, and palm plantations. We’ll stop to explore some temples and the unique Dao Cave, then ride to our lunch stop at the Hua Hin Vineyard. A back road over dirt, gravel and tarmac will take us to the famous Wat Huay Mongkol temple. From there, we’ll pack up our bikes and drive to our hotel in the center of Hua Hin—perfect for a stroll through the lively night market.

Day 4: Hua Hin — Sam Roi Yot — Ban Krut

We kick off our fourth day with a long flat ride through picturesque fishing villages, bustling markets, and countless coconut plantations. Our route will take us into Sam Roi Yot National Park, a wonderland of caves, beaches, and limestone cliffs. We’ll break for lunch at the base of Phraya Nakhon Cave. If you’re up for it, we can climb up to explore its naturally illuminated caverns and royal pavilion before we transfer to our beachside resort.

Day 5: Ban Krut — Koh Talu

Today we trade our bikes for boats as we head to our own private island! We’ll enjoy a short coastal ride, then board a speedboat to Koh Talu. In the afternoon, you set the agenda: snorkel among vibrant coral reefs, kayak around the island, or hike up to the viewpoint for panoramic vistas. We’ll regroup for dinner at our island resort.

Day 6: Koh Talu — Chumphon

Take one last plunge into the crystal-clear waters of Koh Talu before we return to our trusty bikes on the mainland. Our ride today hugs the coastline, with palm-fringed beaches on one side and lush green hills on the other. We round off the day with a boat transfer to our next beach resort.

Day 7: Chumpon — Ranong

Gear up for some undulating terrain as we continue our coastal Thailand cycling tour. After conquering the hills, we’ll trade our bikes for a van to ascend to a local coffee plantation. Here, you’ll learn about (and taste!) some of Thailand’s best Arabica coffee and sample the sweet-sour longan fruit. A refreshing dip at Poonyaban Waterfall, then we’re off to our overnight stop in Ranong, a lively port city near the Burmese border.

Day 8: Ranong — Kuraburi

We’ll start our day with a short ride to a local hot spring and relax our muscles in the 65°C waters. Then, we’ll dive into Thai culture with a visit to a village where Muslims and Buddhists live side by side. A local family will teach us how to make authentic Thai snacks – and of course, enjoy the fruits of our labor! We’ll end the day at our jungle resort and fall asleep to the sounds of nature.

Day 9: Kuraburi — Takuapa

Our Thai experience continues with a one-hour transfer to the historic town of Takuapa, once a flourishing trading port. We’ll cycle through the streets, admire the Chino-Portuguese merchant houses, then ride on to the Tsunami Memorial at Ban Nam Khem. On our way back, we’ll get a look at the fishing boats brought inland by the surging waters. Our day ends at a beautiful Thai-style beach resort, where we’ll enjoy dinner with our toes in the sand.

Day 10: Takuapa — Khao Lak

Our final ride takes us inland through sleepy villages and shady rubber plantations. We’ll pause to cool off at the charming Sai Rung waterfall before completing our journey to Khao Lak. Here, we’ll check into our beachfront bungalows and gather for a farewell dinner.

  • This coastal Thailand cycling tour is suitable for recreational cyclists seeking a bit of a challenge. You will cover 325 km/202 miles over 10 cycling days, with an average distance of 34 km/21 miles a day, with a daily average of 241 m/791 ft of elevation gain—you can find detailed day-to-day distances and elevation changes in the itinerary.

    You can expect a fairly gentle ride each day with none of the distances being overly long. The emphasis on this tour is Thailand’s history, culture, and scenery, all off the beaten track.

    You will ride on a mixture of tarmac and dirt roads, mostly on flat terrain. There are a few small hills and some dirt trails, but these can be tackled with a moderate amount of fitness. To prepare, aim to ride twice a week, with a longer ride on weekends to get comfortable riding for several hours at a time. Adding variety to your routes will help build confidence.

    An air-conditioned support van will always be behind us if you need a rest or a lift to the top. Your guide’s expert knowledge of the area and terrain means you’ll always know what’s next in terms of distance and difficulty. This makes a tremendous difference, as does the constant supply of water and refreshments along the way.

  • Here’s a list of the equipment you need to bring:

      • Day pack large enough to carry all the items listed (around a 25-40L bag)
      • A water bottle or hydration bladder (2L capacity) – will be provided by the guide
      • Comfortable shoes for cycling

    Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.

  • Thailand has a tropical climate with fairly high humidity. The hottest and driest period is March to June, with temperatures between 27-30°C (81-86°F). July to October is the rainy season, with brief showers and slightly lower temperatures. October to February is cooler, with average temperatures between 20-30°C (68-86°F). Coastal areas may experience intermittent rain. Make sure you pack accordingly.

  • Are the bikes included?

    Since some people can’t imagine a cycling trip without their own bicycle, they are not provided as part of this tour. However, you can add a rental bike to your booking for an additional fee upon checkout. If you’re bringing your own bike, a hybrid is strongly recommended. Please make sure it is in good mechanical order.

    What are the rental bikes like?

    For this coastal Thailand cycling tour, your guides offer TREK 7.2 X, FX 3 and 7200 hybrid bikes, with frame sizes from 13 inches (47 cm) to 22 1/2 inches (62 cm). While a specific model cannot be guaranteed, all bikes are carefully selected for comfort and performance.

    If you’re looking for a bit of extra assistance, there’s also a limited number of Giant 2019 Explore E+ 3 e-bikes available. If you’re interested in an e-bike, be sure to mention it when booking.

    What if my bike breaks down?

    Your guide and the support van will carry basic spares and tools, though we can’t guarantee having spares for every conceivable problem. Please bring a basic tool kit, a spare tube, and a pump.

    Safety

    Wearing a helmet is mandatory on this biking adventure—no exceptions. A helmet is included if you rent a bike. Without a helmet, you will not be allowed to ride. Your guide is trained in first aid and emergency response, but you are ultimately responsible for your own safety while cycling. To ensure you’re fully protected, it is required that you have travel insurance that covers mountain biking tours.

  • Group sizes and pricing

      • For this group adventure, the usual client-to-guide ratio is 6:1.
      • It takes a minimum of 2 people for this tour to operate. The maximum group size is set at 16 participants.

    A coastal Thailand cycling tour can be arranged for larger groups. Contact us to make arrangements.

    Min. age requirements

      • If you are older than 18, you’re good to go.
  • The starting point of your coastal Thailand cycling tour is Bangkok. To get there, most people fly into Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK). From there, you can take a shuttle service, public transport, or rent a car to reach Bangkok. It will take you around half an hour, depending on your choice of transportation.

    Once you’re there, you will meet your guide at a predetermined time and convenient spot in Bangkok. More information will be provided upon booking. Please note that it’s best to arrive a day prior to Day 1 of the tour, as you’ll already be cycling on Day 1.
