The adventure, day by day

This is what we ride when we want to show off the South Island properly. No fillers, no dead miles, just a tight line through the best trails New Zealand has to offer. We start near Christchurch and work our way south, picking off the best sections of Alps 2 Ocean, rolling into gold rush country on the Otago trails, carving through Roxburgh Gorge, and cruising the unreal Lake Dunstan ride before finishing in Queenstown. Every day feels different, bigger views, better biking, and that sense you’re covering serious ground. We keep things smooth off the bike too, so all we have to do is ride, eat well, and do it all again tomorrow.

Day 1: Christchurch Port Hills ride
Christchurch New Zealand

You’ll meet your guide in Christchurch at 8 am and they will drive you up to the Port Hills to start riding along the crater rim of an extinct volcano. From Dyers Pass, we’ll follow the scenic Summit Road with wide-open views over the Canterbury Plains, Southern Alps, and Lyttelton Harbour. We’ll ride out to Godley Head for coastal views, then descend into Lyttelton for a wander through its cafés and historic streets before returning to Christchurch for some downtime and our first group dinner.

Meals: Lunch, dinner
Accommodation: 3 or 4-star hotel or motel in Christchurch
Biking: 30 km (18.6 mi)

Day 2: Christchurch to Twizel
Biker in New Zealand on cloudy day

After breakfast, we drive across the Canterbury Plains and through Burke’s Pass into Mackenzie Country, stopping at Lake Tekapo and the Church of the Good Shepherd. After lunch, we begin riding the Alps 2 Ocean trail, following quiet roads and hydro canals toward Lake Pukaki, with constant mountain views. We continue across open tussock landscapes to Twizel, where we settle in for the night beneath some of New Zealand’s clearest night skies.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch
Accommodation: 3 or 4-star hotel or motel in Twizel
Biking: 54 km (33.5 mi)

Day 3: Twizel to Omarama
Omarama rocks

We continue along the Alps 2 Ocean route, riding beside canals and lakes with a big alpine backdrop. Stronger riders can climb to Tarnbrae Saddle, the high point of the trail, while others take a shorter transfer and enjoy an easier ride into Omarama. The scenery stays wide and open all day, and in the evening we gather for a classic small-town Kiwi pub dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: 3 or 4-star hotel or motel in Omarama
Biking: 38 km (23.6 mi) + optional 44 km (27.3 mi)

Day 4: Omarama to Cromwell
Biking near a field in New Zealand

Today we follow the Waitaki Valley, riding along Lake Benmore and past hydro dams, rocky shorelines, and small hidden beaches. There’s an option to skip a more technical section if preferred. After finishing our Alps 2 Ocean riding at Aviemore Dam, we transfer over Lindis Pass into Central Otago and arrive in Cromwell, with time to explore its historic gold rush-era old town.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: 3 or 4-star hotel or motel in Cromwell
Biking: 51 km (31.7 mi)

Day 5: Cromwell to Clyde
Lake Dunstan in New Zealand

We ride the full Lake Dunstan Trail, one of the newest and most impressive rides in the country. Starting along the lake shore, we pass vineyards, orchards, and old mining landscapes before entering the dramatic Cromwell Gorge, where the trail clings to cliffs and crosses above the water on engineered platforms and bridges. We finish in Clyde, where we settle in for the next two nights.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: 3 or 4-star hotel or motel in Clyde
Biking: 55 km (34 mi)

Day 6: Clyde to Clyde
Otago rail trail biking

After a short transfer to Ida Valley, we ride one of the best sections of the Otago Central Rail Trail, passing through tunnels, over viaducts, and across open high-country landscapes shaped by early settlers. The route winds past rivers, gorges, and historic sites before a mostly downhill return to Clyde. The evening is free to explore and dine at one of the local restaurants.

Meals: Breakfast
Accommodation: 3 or 4-star hotel or motel in Clyde
Biking: 60 km (37 mi)

Day 7: Clyde to Alexandra
Bikers on a pier in New Zealand

We ride from Clyde along the Clutha River into the remote Roxburgh Gorge, where the trail cuts through rugged, treeless terrain shaped by gold mining history. A jet boat transfer carries us deeper into the gorge before we continue riding through quiet valleys and farmland toward Roxburgh. After the ride, we transfer to Alexandra, with time for a vineyard visit before a final group dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation: 3 or 4-star hotel or motel in Alexandra
Biking: 40 km (24.8 mi)

Day 8: Queenstown trails & Arrowtown finish
Queenstown aerial shot

Our final ride takes us along the Kawarau Gorge Trail, crossing suspension bridges and following dramatic river scenery shaped by gold mining history. We continue through Gibbston Valley, known for its vineyards, then ride the Arrow River Bridges Trail into Arrowtown, crossing multiple bridges along the way. We wrap up with a farewell drink before transferring to Queenstown in the afternoon, and then it’s time for departure.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch
Biking: 54 km (33.5 mi)

An awesome week of biking and eating! Fantastic locations, accommodation, bikes, organisation and guides. We couldn’t have asked for better weather and loved our trip.

Of course, the south island of New Zealand is stunningly beautiful, which makes for a wonderful trip. But our guides, Anne and Will, added so much to the trip: history, interesting information on the flora and fauna, history on the development of the Great Ride trails we were riding. They related so well to our group.

Having ridden most of the South Island trails in previous tours this 8 day tour truly captures the best of the routes. I would highly recommend this tour but some cycling skill is required.

Each ride is carefully chosen to highlight the most scenic and enjoyable parts of every trail, without unnecessary mileage.

  • This New Zealand South Island bike tour is best suited for riders with a good level of fitness. You’ll be spending several hours on the bike most days, with distances reaching up to 60 km (37 mi), so you should feel comfortable riding for extended periods on consecutive days.

The terrain is generally non-technical, but it’s varied, with a mix of gravel trails and some longer days in the saddle. You don’t need to be a hardcore cyclist, but having some prior experience and being used to regular riding will make the trip much more enjoyable.

In preparation for this adventure, we recommend dedicating 90 minutes to cycling three to five times a week for at least three months leading up to your trip. This practice will help you build the endurance and stamina required for the journey.

We recommend training on gravel trails and completing a multi-day ride prior to your trip to get used to being in the saddle for long periods of time. The tour is fully supported and if at any stage you feel like having a rest from cycling you will be able to ride in the support vehicle.

  • The riding on this trip is mostly on dedicated cycle trails with a mix of surfaces. Expect a combination of hard-packed gravel, compact dirt, and sections of sealed road, with many trails following old railways, river paths, and purpose-built bike tracks.

On routes like Alps 2 Ocean and the Otago Central Rail Trail, the surface is generally smooth and well-graded, making for easy, flowing riding. At times, you’ll also encounter looser gravel and shingle surfaces, especially in more remote or river-adjacent sections.

Trails like Lake Dunstan and Roxburgh Gorge add more variety, with narrower paths, some exposed sections, and stretches of boardwalks and bridges built into the landscape. Overall, the terrain is non-technical but varied enough to keep things interesting day after day.

  • The tour is fully supported so you won’t have to carry anything. If hiring one of our bikes, it will have a rear saddle bag with enough space to put an extra layer, your camera, wallet, phone etc. We recommend you pack your luggage in a soft sports bag for easy stowing in the trailer/ vehicle. We urge you to keep your luggage to a minimum. If you have extra luggage you do not require for your holiday, we can arrange to store it until the end of the trip.

Here’s a list of the equipment you need to bring:

      • Bike & helmet — bike rental available
      • Comfortable biking clothes
      • Spare clothes for layering
      • Sneakers or sport shoes
      • Breathable outside layer or jacket
      • Waterproof rain jacket
      • Fleece
      • Quality thermal wear
      • Casual clothes and sneakers for when you’re not cycling
      • Sunhat
      • Toiletries (sunscreen, hand sanitizer, bug spray, toilet paper, etc.)
      • Headlamp or flashlight
      • Sunglasses
      • Biking gloves
      • Camera — optional (but recommended)

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.
