Only 1% out of 6 million people visiting the Grand Canyon venture below the rim. And out of that 1%, only the most fearless ones dare to undertake the Deer Creek and Thunder River loop. This arduous, 29-mile journey isn’t for the faint of heart—it involves steep switchbacks, nimble scrambling, and wildly varying weather conditions. But the gems you’ll come across on this 6-day backpacking journey are well worth it. Picture the archetypal amber-tinted rocks and walls of Grand Canyon, but with a high-powered flow from the Thunder River rushing through surreal Deer Creek narrows, gushing waterfalls, and refreshing pools. If you want to witness the remoteness of the GC with far less people than on other trails, this one’s for you.

Overnight permits for Grand Canyon backpacking adventures become available three months prior to departure and are competitive in nature. In the event that we are unsuccessful in obtaining permits for the trip, your guides will provide an alternative or a refund.
There are multiple options to reach Kanab, the city where you’ll stay a day prior to and after the backpacking trip. Most people fly into one of these three major airports: Harry Read International Airport (LAS) near Las Vegas, Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC), and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). From there, the best option would be renting a car—depending on the chosen airport, it will take you anywhere between 3 and 5.5 hours to get to Kanab.
Once you and your guide agree on the details of your itinerary, your guide will suggest the best place to meet, whether that’s at the guide shop, the hotel you’re staying at, or a predetermined location.
