  • This is the beating heart of the Hakuba MTB experience—six guided days of riding across Nagano Prefecture, based out of either a private chalet or a cozy mountain lodge depending on group size. Every day looks a little different: some days you're charging lift-accessed bike parks with sweeping alpine views, others you're threading ancient forestry singletrack through cedar forests and bamboo glades. Cultural visits, hand-picked restaurants, and an onsen at the end of every evening are woven into the week from the start. Trails are tailored to the group each day, two guides are always on hand, and all the logistics are taken care of.

    • Arrive in Hakuba, where your guide will meet you at the Hakuba Bus Station and bring you to your accommodation. Once everyone is settled, we go over the week ahead—trails, logistics, and what to expect—before heading out for a welcome dinner at one of the guides’ favorite local spots.

Accommodation: Private chalet or mountain lodge

    • Six days of riding across Nagano Prefecture, with each day tailored to the group’s ability and energy. The trail mix ranges from lift-accessed bike parks with flow lines and technical descents to ancient forestry paths with massive natural berms and fast, flowy lines. Some days bring big-mountain enduro terrain with over 1 km (0.6 mi) of vertical; others are more relaxed. Between ride days, we visit Zenkoji Temple, Matsumoto Castle, and a hidden forest temple in the village of Ikeda.

Evenings are spent at hand-picked local restaurants—izakayas, a 160-year-old traditional house, spots with mountain views—and most nights end at one of Hakuba’s onsens, where the mineral-rich waters do exactly what you need them to after a full day in the saddle.

    • This trip is built for mountain bikers who want more than just great trails. If you’re as curious about the culture, food, and history around you as you are about the next descent, you’re in the right place.

        • Riding ability Intermediate to advanced riders will feel at home here. Trails mostly range from blue to black, with multiple line choices on most runs. Black-rated sections may include steep, loose terrain and short technical descents—rollable features that don’t require lifting the front wheel. No features are mandatory and any challenging section can always be walked.
        • Group dynamics — Each day’s itinerary is flexible and tailored to the group’s ability, interests, and energy levels. With two guides on hand, we can split the group when needed so everyone rides at their own pace on trails that suit their ability. Solo travelers, pairs, and groups of friends all join these departures—and the shared experience tends to bring people together quickly.
        • Culture and food — Between ride days, we visit ancient temples, feudal castles, and hidden forest shrines. Evenings are built around hand-picked local restaurants—izakayas, traditional houses, spots with mountain views—and most nights end at one of Hakuba’s onsens. This isn’t a trip where culture is an afterthought.
        • Evenings — After the riding, the pace is yours to set. Soak in an onsen, explore a local restaurant, or simply unwind at the accommodation. The evenings are yours.
    • This trip requires excellent fitness. You need to be comfortable riding for full days on varied and demanding terrain, generally 4–6 hours in the saddle per day. Trails range mostly from blue to black difficulty, with technical descents, steep and loose sections, and big-mountain enduro lines with over 1 km (0.6 mi) of vertical drop on some routes.

Challenging sections can always be walked, and with two guides on hand, the group can split when needed so everyone rides at their own level and pace.

Some routes follow historic forestry trails originally carved by horses hauling timber, offering fast, bermy descents with huge natural berms and occasional steep pitches. Others are technical singletrack with big-mountain enduro character. We also ride lift-accessed bike parks with trails ranging from green to double black diamond—thoughtfully built and never overcrowded.

Compared to terrain in places like Squamish or the Pacific Northwest, Japanese trails typically have fewer embedded rocks and roots, meaning smoother lines and more consistent traction across most zones—reassuring for riders who haven’t ridden Japan before.

Skill development is built into every ride day. Your guides offer tips, discuss features, and help you ride with greater confidence on technical terrain throughout the week.

Flights from North America typically arrive around 4 pm, making an overnight stay in Tokyo a practical and enjoyable way to start the journey.
