  • The East Coast of Iceland is still quite unknown to the masses visiting this remarkable island. A 5-day, all-women hiking tour in Víknaslóðir lets you explore the mountains, the ocean, and everything in between—and there’s a lot of this, from enormous tuff boulders strewn across lakes to isolated coves and fjords. • Wake up and start the day with a warm cup of coffee alongside breakfast. Today’s hike begins in the eastern part of Borgarfjörður, in the town of Hofströnd, as we make our way to Brúnavík, the first inlet of the day, enjoying breathtaking views of the North Atlantic along the way. From there, we continue toward Breiðuvíkur, a farmstead tucked into the cove of Kjólsvik, where we’ll stop for a packed lunch. After a well-earned break, the hike continues to Glettinganes—be sure to watch your step, as the trail becomes rocky in this section.

Our day ends at a cozy cabin near the beaches of Breiðuvík, where we’ll settle in for the evening. After some time to relax, we’ll gather to prepare a delicious local meal, guided by your Viking Women host. For those craving a bit more adventure, a sunset stroll along the beach is the perfect way to end the day.

As the trail turns south, a spectacular valley surrounded by the Hvítuhnjúkur, Hvítafjall, and Hvítserk mountains unfolds, offering the perfect spot for a lunch break, leisurely stroll, and stunning photos.

Continuing on, we’ll pass by two lakes, Gæsavatn and Urðarhólavatn, before reaching the road that leads us to Húsavík. Our accommodations for the night will be a cozy mountain hut, set on the site of a small, deserted farm from the 1950s. We’ll spend some time exploring Loðmundarfjörður, once home to one of Iceland’s most remote communities. If we’re lucky, we might spot eider ducks, seals, reindeer, and perhaps some horses and sheep roaming the moorlands. The day will end at a cozy mountain hut, where we’ll relax, enjoy a home-cooked dinner, and unwind before settling into our sleeping bags for the night.

Today, we’ll hike up to Hjálmárdalsheiði, situated at around 600 m (1,970 ft), before making our way out of the fjord toward the old town site of Hjálmárströnd. The path we follow is an ancient route between two fjords, and it’s relatively easy. We’ll pause for lunch and a well-deserved rest along the way.

At the end of the road, we’ll reach the edge of Seyðisfjörður fjord, then navigate through Kækjuskárð. After descending a steep slope, we’ll arrive in the charming town of Seyðisfjörður. You are allowed to take one piece of luggage on the tour. Your guide advises you not to bring a massive one, as the huts don’t have much room to spread out our stuff. There are luggage lockers at four centrally located places in Reykjavik where you can store your extra luggage.

For your own well-being and safety, we strongly suggest following the advice of this equipment list. This includes having good quality rain gear, tops, and bottoms. Cotton clothing is not appropriate for any strenuous outdoor activity—nor are jeans and cotton t-shirts. Modern outdoor clothing is by far more comfortable and will greatly improve your experience.

    • Iceland, the “Land of Fire and Ice”, has forever lived with volcanic activity. Minor and major eruptions have occurred every few years since the island was formed. Some of Iceland’s appeal, aside from sheer natural beauty, surely stems from this very fact.

However, every new eruption, such as the recent Reykjanes Peninsula fissure, will make some travelers, tourists, and adventurers uneasy, especially given the fact that sensationalist media is not immune to misinformation and speculation.

Since we work with a number of expert local guides in Iceland, we thought we’d share their input and fill you in on what’s actually going on.

First of all, air traffic has not been affected. Flights to and from Keflavík International Airport and Reykjavík Domestic Airport are operating as they always do.

Second, the effects of volcanic activity have been localized, with some roads closed, and all services in Iceland are operating as usual. Reykjavik, the capital, is around 40 km (25 miles) away from the volcanic fissure, and life there is as normal as ever.

And third, trips offered by 57hours are taking place much further away, and are thereby even less likely to be affected by the volcanic activity, being perfectly safe for adventurers. Naturally, the authorities (and guides) are monitoring the situation and doing everything possible to keep both local residents and visitors safe and well informed.
