  • The full trail, done properly. This 7-day guided tour covers the complete 320 km (200 mi) Alps to Ocean Cycle Trail from its official start at Aoraki/Mt Cook Village all the way to Oamaru on the Pacific coast. Meeting in Queenstown, the adventure opens with a helicopter ride across the Tasman River to the trailhead—a cinematic start that sets the tone for everything that follows. Accommodation is a well-curated mix: a backcountry farmstay at Braemar Station with views straight to Aoraki, a night at Lake Ohau Lodge with hot tubs overlooking the lake, glamping tents in Kurow, and a boutique hostel in Oamaru.

    • Meet your guide in central Queenstown at around 8 am and kick things off with a warm-up ride along the Arrow River Trail in historic Arrowtown, crossing five impressive bridges before reaching the Kawarau Bridge—where the brave (and slightly unhinged) are hurling themselves off on bungee cords. From there we load the bikes and drive to Aoraki/Mt Cook Village, the official start of the Alps to Ocean Cycle Trail. There’s time to visit the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre or the National Park visitor centre, and to stretch your legs on the Tasman Glacier Track for sweeping mountain views before our first group dinner.

      Meals: Dinner
      Cycling: 14 km (9 mi)
Hiking: Up to 5 km (3 mi)
Accommodation: Aoraki Alpine Lodge, Mt Cook

Glacial landscapes in UNESCO-protected Aori/Mt Cook National Park, NZ.
    • After breakfast and a final look around the village, we cycle to the Mt Cook Airport for the highlight of the trip’s opening stretch: a short helicopter flight across the braided Tasman River to meet the trail on the far bank. It’s a spectacular few minutes in the air. From the landing point, we ride along the turquoise edge of Lake Pukaki with Aoraki/Mt Cook filling the horizon behind us. After a picnic lunch, the trail continues to Braemar Road and the backcountry farmstay of Braemar Station. The views across Lake Pukaki from the property are extraordinary, and the home-cooked dinner is one of the trip’s best meals.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
      Cycling: 38 km (24 mi)
Accommodation: Braemar Station, Lake Pukaki (shared bathrooms)

Pukaki lake reflecting the snow-capped Mt Cook, New Zealand’s South Island.
    • We leave Braemar Station and wind around the southern edge of Lake Pukaki, crossing the wide-open tussock flats toward Twizel. After lunch, the trail follows the Pukaki and Ohau canals before skirting the shoreline of Lake Ohau and arriving at Lake Ohau Lodge. This evening there’s time to unwind in the onsite hot tubs overlooking the lake—a well-earned end to the longest day of the trip.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
      Cycling: 80 km (50 mi)
      Accommodation: Lake Ohau Lodge

Cyclists in front of Lake Oahu Lodge
    • Those looking for a challenge can tackle the Tarnbrae Saddle—at 900 m (2,953 ft), it’s the highest point on the entire trail, and the rough shingle track up there earns you some of the finest panoramic views of the Mackenzie Basin. It’s suited to confident, fitter riders. Alternatively, transfer by van to Quailburn for a relaxed, mostly downhill ride into Omarama. Omarama translates from Māori as “place of light,” a reference to the extraordinary clarity of the sky here. The region is also famous for gliding. Tonight there’s the option to soak in one of the private outdoor hot tubs (own expense, subject to availability).

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
      Cycling: 44 km (27 mi) / Short option: 26 km (16 mi)
      Accommodation: Sierra Motel, Omarama

Waitaki valley in NZ’s South Island with braided rivers and vineyards, one of the areas through which the Alps to Ocean cycle trail passes.
    • We follow the trail along the shores of Lake Benmore to Sailors Cutting, winding around rocky outcrops and past secluded beaches, with views of the lake’s isolated green islands. The trail then drops us down from above Benmore Dam onto the quiet lakeside road—there’s an easier van option for those who’d rather skip this more technical section. After regrouping, it’s a fun downhill run toward Aviemore Dam where we stop for a lakeside picnic before the final ride into Kurow. Tonight’s stay is genuinely special: Valley Views Glamping, where your “tent” is a private canvas dome with a king-sized bed, down duvets, and its own balcony.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
      Cycling: 74 km (46 mi)
Accommodation: Valley Views Glamping, Kurow (shared bathrooms)

Benmore lake at the foot of the mountains, New Zealand.
    • The final riding day starts with Māori rock art sites and the surreal Elephant Rocks near Duntroon—giant limestone formations strewn across an otherwise ordinary paddock. Following an old railway branch line, we cycle through Raki’s tunnel and roll downhill into Windsor before the last push through rural countryside and past the Oamaru stone quarry to Friendly Bay. That’s the official end of the Alps to Ocean Cycle Trail. We mark the finish with a group photo at the trail’s famous picture-frame sign and head into Oamaru’s Victorian Precinct for a well-earned final dinner.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
      Cycling: 77 km (48 mi)
      Accommodation: Poshtel, Oamaru

Curious rock formations, Elephant Rocks, in New Zealand.
    • No cycling today, just a leisurely morning exploring Oamaru’s characterful Victorian Precinct, with its stone-fronted galleries, boutique shops, and the optional Steampunk HQ museum (own expense). We then drive north through the agricultural Canterbury Plains, arriving in central Christchurch at around 3 pm where the tour wraps up.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch

A Gothic Revival church in the city of Oamaru, New Zealand.

For groups of 8+, there will be two guide-drivers; one riding with the group, one supporting you from the vehicle.

    • Both tours follow the same iconic trail through the same spectacular South Island scenery, with the same guiding team, full vehicle support, and all meals included. The differences come down to starting point, duration, and a few key experiences.

Choose the Alps to Ocean Classic (6 days) if you:

        • Have less time or prefer a slightly shorter, more relaxed week on the bike
        • Are happy to start and finish in Christchurch—no extra flights needed
        • Want to ease into the trail from Lake Tekapo, skipping the very first section from Aoraki/Mt Cook
        • Prefer a slightly lower average daily distance (~230 km / 143 mi total across 5 riding days)
        • Are a first-time long-distance cyclist or want more flexibility via the short-option days

Choose the Alps to Ocean End to End (7 days) if you:

        • Want to cycle the trail in full, from its official start at Aoraki/Mt Cook to the Pacific
        • Are up for the most cinematic opening to a cycling trip in New Zealand—a helicopter flight across the Tasman River to the trailhead is included
        • Don’t mind starting in Queenstown and ending in Christchurch (one-way travel logistics)
        • Are comfortable with a longer week on the bike (~320 km / 200 mi total, with one 80 km / 50 mi day that has no short option)
        • Want the full sweep of accommodation highlights—including a night at Braemar Station, a remote high-country farmstay with views straight to Aoraki
    • Both itineraries require good fitness. The average daily distance across both trips is around 55–60 km (34–37 mi), and your guides recommend building up to 90 minutes of cycling, 3 to 5 times a week, for at least 3 months before the tour—ideally with some time on hills and loose terrain.

The terrain is a mix: some sections run on sealed roads or firm-packed gravel and are straightforward; others involve looser gravel, narrower tracks with switchbacks, and some exposure. The two trickier stretches on both tours are the Tarnbrae Saddle crossing and the section from Sailors Cutting to Benmore Dam. Your guides will brief you ahead of both, and the support vehicle is always available if you’d rather skip them.

      Where the two trips differ:

The End to End is the more demanding of the two. The longest day clocks in at 80 km (50 mi), and the overall mileage is higher—320 km (200 mi) across 6 riding days. Day 3, from Braemar Station to Lake Ohau, is a full 80 km (50 mi) with no short option.

The Classic is a slightly gentler entry point. The longest day is up to 83 km (52 mi) on Day 3 if you take the long route over the Tarnbrae Saddle, but the short option brings it down to 64 km (40 mi). Total riding distance is around 230 km (143 mi) across 5 riding days.

On both tours, no one is ever left behind—the support vehicle is there if you need it, and less confident riders can skip technical sections entirely without missing the destination.

    • In preparation for this adventure, we recommend dedicating 90 minutes to cycling three to five times a week for at least three months leading up to your trip. This practice will help you build the endurance and stamina required for the journey. There are ample hills to conquer, so it’s advisable to practice cycling uphill and on rougher terrain before your tour to ensure you fully appreciate the fantastic riding and diverse scenery.

    • The terrain is a mix: some sections run on sealed roads or firm-packed gravel and are straightforward; others involve looser gravel, narrower tracks with switchbacks, and some exposure. The two trickier stretches on both tours are the Tarnbrae Saddle crossing and the section from Sailors Cutting to Benmore Dam. Your guides will brief you ahead of both, and the support vehicle is always available if you’d rather skip them.

    • The tour is fully supported so you won’t have to carry anything. If hiring one of our bikes, it will have a rear saddle bag with enough space to put an extra layer, your camera, wallet, phone etc. We recommend you pack your luggage in a soft sports bag for easy stowing in the trailer/ vehicle. We urge you to keep your luggage to a minimum. If you have extra luggage you do not require for your holiday, we can arrange to store it until the end of the trip.

    • To get to Queenstown, most people fly into Queenstown Airport. You will meet your guide and fellow cyclists at a central location in the city at 8.00 am on Day 1.

We recommend arriving a day prior to the cycling adventure as our journey kicks off right after this initial gathering. Arriving a day in advance provides you with the opportunity to relax and ensures a seamless and stress-free start to your experience.

Please keep in mind that the adventure finishes in Christchurch in the late afternoon on the last day. We advise against booking an international flight immediately after the tour, as there’s a considerable risk of missing your flight should your group’s arrival in the city be delayed. We highly recommend arranging accommodation in Christchurch following the adventure.
