  • This 5-day self-guided version of the Laugavegur trek takes you from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk on your own, with the logistics fully handled. You travel by private transfer from Reykjavík, spend four nights in mountain huts along the route, and get pre-trip route information so you know where you're headed each day. Your luggage is transferred between huts ahead of you, so you only carry a day pack while hiking. There's no guide and no set group pace—you hike each stretch on your own schedule. Meals aren't included, so you'll plan and carry your own food, or resupply where possible along the way.

    • You start the trek in Reykjavík, picked up by private Highland vehicle for the roughly 10 am departure into the Highlands. By the time you reach Landmannalaugar, you’re already deep in one of Iceland’s most surreal landscapes—its rhyolite mountains streaked with color, framed by lava fields and steaming geothermal ground. You settle into the mountain hut and spend the rest of the day exploring at your own pace, with time, depending on conditions, for a short local hike or a soak in the natural geothermal bathing pool before settling in for the night.

      Accommodation: Landmannalaugar Mountain Hut

Hikers crossing a rocky stream in Landmannalaugar
    • After breakfast, the Laugavegur begins in earnest. You climb out of Landmannalaugar through more rhyolite mountains and geothermal terrain, working up into the high country around Hrafntinnusker before descending toward Álftavatn. It’s a long, rewarding first full day on the trail and a good demonstration of how fast the landscape changes here—one stretch is steaming volcanic ground, the next is wide-open Highland views. You spend the night at the Álftavatn mountain hut, with your luggage already transferred ahead of you.

      Accommodation: Álftavatn Mountain Hut

Signpost to Laugavegur, Landmannalaugar, and Blahnukur
    • Leaving Álftavatn, the trail drops into an increasingly stark, volcanic landscape. You cross rivers and cut across wide black-sand plains, with green mountains, glaciers, and volcanic formations around you the whole way, before reaching the Emstrur mountain hut for the night—one of the more otherworldly stretches of the Laugavegur, stark and quiet in a way that’s hard to describe until you’re standing in it.

      Accommodation: Emstrur Mountain Hut

      Icelandic landscape with volcanic terrain
    • The final major trekking stage starts among the same stark terrain surrounding Emstrur, but it doesn’t stay that way for long. As you get closer to Þórsmörk, the landscape turns green—vegetation thickens, glacial views open up, and birch forest closes in around the trail, making for one of the best conclusions of any multi-day hike in Iceland. You spend your last night on the trail at the Básar mountain hut, deep in the Þórsmörk valley.

      Accommodation: Básar Mountain Hut, Þórsmörk

Thorsmork valley with moss-covered cliffs, a river, and a glacier
    • You have the final morning free to enjoy Þórsmörk before leaving the Highlands behind, whether that’s a short farewell hike or just taking in the surroundings one last time. Afterward, you board private transport back to Reykjavík, closing out five days on one of Iceland’s most iconic trails.

View of Thorsmork valley and surrounding mountains

    • This self-guided Laugavegur Trek requires great fitness and some multi-day hiking experience, along with confidence navigating a well-marked trek on your own. You’ll walk between 12-17 km (7.5-10.6 mi) each day for 4-7 hours, except for a shorter final day.

Since there’s no guide setting the pace, you can adjust your speed and rest stops to what feels right each day—just keep in mind you’ll need to reach each hut at a reasonable hour to settle in for the night.

The route goes through Iceland’s volcanic areas, across rivers, over mountains and through canyons, reaching 1,100 m (3,609 ft) high at Hrafntinnusker. You only need to carry a day pack since your main gear moves between huts, but you should be comfortable walking uphill for several hours and handling different types of ground and weather.

To prepare for this adventure, consider doing some long practice hikes and regular exercise before the trip. If you’ve never done a multi-day hike before, try some full-day hikes first to build up your strength.

    • Self-guided tours are perfect for those who enjoy exploring on their own terms—at their own pace, and with the company they choose. By joining this self-guided Laugavegur Trek, we take care of:

        • Accommodation for 4 nights at mountain huts along the route
        • Luggage transportation between huts
        • Private Reykjavík ⇄ trail transfers
        • Route and pre-trip information
        • Logistical coordination and support throughout

Rather than joining a guided group, you’ll navigate the tour yourself, using resources provided by the tour operator. For a hassle-free journey with everything arranged for you in advance, there’s no better option!

As a self-guided tour is built around your preferred travel dates, your guide will take care of arranging accommodations and details after you book. Note that exact accommodations and dates might shift slightly, so don’t make any travel arrangements until the details of your adventure are confirmed.

    • Group sizes and pricing

    • No, single occupancy rooms aren’t an option as you’ll be staying in mountain huts, in shared dormitories.

    • The starting point of your self-guided Laugavegur Trail is Reykjavík, Iceland. To get there, most people fly into Keflavik Airport (KEF). From there, it’s best to take shuttle service or public transport to Reykjavik.

Once you’re there, you will meet your guide around 10 am in Reykjavík. You will decide on the exact meeting spot after booking.

Since the trek starts in the morning of Day 1, it’s best you arrive a day prior to the start of the adventure.
