Cancellation policy

The percentages in the table above are of the full trip price, not of what you’ve paid at the time of booking.

Cancellations made within 48 hours of booking receive a full refund on all plans, including booking fees and insurance. After the 48-hour window, your refund depends on your selected protection plan and when you cancel. Core and Premium plans extend your cancellation rights beyond the Standard policy:

  • With Core, a covered reason gets you 75% of your trip cost back — even the day before you go.
  • With Premium, a covered reason gets you 100% of your trip cost back — and any other reason gets you 75%, right up to the day you leave.
What counts as a covered reason
  • Sudden illness or injury — yours, a travel companion’s, or an immediate family member’s, confirmed by a doctor
  • Death of a traveler or an immediate family member
  • A natural disaster affecting your destination or your departure point
  • A government travel advisory against travel to your destination

Changing your mind isn’t a covered reason. Premium is the only plan that covers that. Documentation is required for all insurance claims.

Everything the travel insurance covers

Both plans include travel insurance through Redpoint Travel Protection. Core insures 75% of your trip cost; Premium insures 100%.

Maximum per person:

  • Trip cancellation — up to 100% of your trip cost
  • Cancel for any reason — up to 75% of your trip cost (Premium only)
  • Trip interruption — 150% of the trip cost limit
  • Trip delay — $200 a day, $1,000 max
  • Itinerary change — $250
  • Single occupancy supplement — up to 100% of trip cost
  • Missed connection — $1,000
  • Travel inconvenience — $250 each, $750 max
  • Pet return — $1,000 per pet
  • Baggage and personal effects — $2,500, max $300 an item
  • Baggage delay — $600, after 12 hours
  • Baggage delivery — $100 per trip
  • Emergency medical expenses — $100,000
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation — up to $1,000,000

These are maximums. What a claim actually pays depends on what you can document and on the policy’s exclusions — pre-existing conditions and undeclared activities among them. We’ll send the full policy wording with your confirmation.

  • Our 5-day Laugavegur trek takes us from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk, hiking Iceland's best-known Highland trail with a local guide. We travel by private Highland vehicle from Reykjavík, spend four nights in mountain huts along the route, and let our guide handle the huts, the luggage transfers, and the trail-finding while we focus on walking. Meals are included from dinner on day 1 through lunch on day 5, with trail lunches packed each morning before we set out. It's a small-group trip built around the terrain itself—rhyolite mountains, geothermal ground, black-sand deserts, and birch forest—rather than around long transfers or big crowds.

    • We start the trek together in Reykjavík, picked up by private Highland vehicle for the roughly 10 am departure into the Highlands. By the time we reach Landmannalaugar, we’re already deep in one of Iceland’s most surreal landscapes—rhyolite mountains streaked with color, framed by lava fields and steaming geothermal ground. After settling into the mountain hut, we head out on an introductory hike around Landmannalaugar, with the exact route depending on weather, trail conditions, and our arrival time. Back at the hut, there’s time for a soak in the natural geothermal pool before dinner.

      Hiking: 4-6 km (2.5-3.7 mi), 2-3 hours
      Elevation gain/loss: 150-250 m (490-820 ft)
      Meals: Dinner
      Accommodation: Landmannalaugar Mountain Hut

    • After breakfast, the Laugavegur begins in earnest. We climb out of Landmannalaugar through more rhyolite mountains and geothermal terrain, working up into the high country around Hrafntinnusker before descending toward Álftavatn. It’s a long, rewarding first full day on the trail and a good demonstration of how fast the landscape changes here—one stretch is steaming volcanic ground, the next is wide-open Highland views. We spend the night at the Álftavatn mountain hut, with our luggage already transferred ahead of us.

      Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner
      Accommodation: Álftavatn Mountain Hut

    • Leaving Álftavatn, the trail drops into an increasingly stark, volcanic landscape. We cross rivers and cut across wide black-sand plains, with green mountains, glaciers, and volcanic formations standing around us the whole way, before reaching the Emstrur mountain hut for the night—one of the more otherworldly stretches of the Laugavegur, stark and quiet in a way that’s hard to describe until you’re standing in it.

      Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner
      Accommodation: Emstrur Mountain Hut

      surreal landscapes in iceland
    • The final major trekking stage starts among the same stark terrain surrounding Emstrur, but it doesn’t stay that way for long. As we get closer to Þórsmörk, the landscape turns green—vegetation thickens, glacial views open up, and birch forest closes in around the trail, making for one of the best conclusions of any multi-day hike in Iceland. We spend our last night on the trail at the Básar mountain hut, deep in the Þórsmörk valley.

      Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner
      Accommodation: Básar Mountain Hut, Þórsmörk

Thorsmork valley with moss-covered cliffs, a river, and a glacier
    • After breakfast at Básar, we set out on the Fimmvörðuháls trail, climbing out of Þórsmörk toward the pass between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. Our goal is to reach Morinsheiði, a high plateau with sweeping views back over the valley, and possibly a little beyond. How far we go depends on the weather on the day. We then head back down to Básar and board private transport to Reykjavík, closing out five days on one of Iceland’s most iconic trails.

      Elevation gain/loss: 600-700 m (2,000-2,300 ft), weather-dependent
      Meals: Breakfast, lunch

View of Thorsmork valley and surrounding mountains
    • Included:

        • 5-day small-group Laugavegur Trail hiking adventure
        • Accommodation for 4 nights at mountain huts along the route
        • All meals from dinner on day 1 through lunch on day 5 (4 breakfasts, 4 trail lunches, 4 dinners)—trail lunches are prepared each morning at breakfast and carried in day packs
        • Luggage transportation between huts
        • Private Reykjavík ⇄ trail transfers
        • Highland logistics and support throughout
        • Pre-trip information and preparation guidance

        • Airport transfers
        • Alcoholic beverages
        • Showers in the mountain huts
        • Personal mountain gear
        • Anything not mentioned in the “Included” section above
        • Guide gratuities — optional
        • Insurance — recommended, available to add at checkout
    • This small-group Laugavegur Trail hike requires great fitness and some hiking experience. You’ll walk between 12-17 km (7.5-10.6 mi) each day for 4-7 hours, except for a shorter final day.

The route goes through Iceland’s volcanic areas, across rivers, over mountains and through canyons, reaching 1,100 m (3,609 ft) high at Hrafntinnusker. You only need to carry a day pack since your main gear moves between huts, but you should be comfortable walking uphill for several hours and handling different types of ground and weather.

To prepare for this adventure, consider doing some long practice hikes and regular exercise before the trip. If you’ve never done a multi-day hike before, try some full-day hikes first to build up your strength.

    • Not every Laugavegur trek runs the same way. A few things set this one apart. Your guides don’t just sell these experiences in the Icelandic Highlands—they operate in them, and they know every detail that matters and then some. Here’s why this trek might be the perfect fit for you:

        • Own Highland transport — your guides run their own vehicles rather than relying on scheduled Highland buses, giving more control and flexibility if weather or river conditions change.
        • Small groups — departures are kept intentionally small, so your guide has room to adjust pace and plans to the people actually on the trail.
        • A later start — departure from Reykjavík is around 10 am, leaving time for breakfast before heading into the Highlands, rather than an early bus-terminal start.
        • Luggage handled — transportation between huts is included throughout, so you only carry a day pack.
    • Here’s a list of the equipment you need to bring:

        • Day pack large enough to carry everything you might need throughout the day (around a 25-40L bag)
        • Duffel bag for transport of overnight gear
        • Hiking poles — recommended
        • Thermal underwear (top and bottom)
        • Wool or fleece thermal mid layer
        • Waterproof and breathable hiking pants and jacket
        • Wool hat
        • Gloves
        • Hiking socks (2-3 pairs)
        • Waterproof hiking boots
        • Casual shoes to wear when not hiking
        • Warm clothes for the huts
        • Lightweight, quick-drying water shoes (for river crossing)
        • Bathing suit (for the geothermal pool in Landmannalaugar)
        • Sleeping bag and travel pillow
        • Fast-drying towel
        • Water bottle (1-2L capacity)
        • Lunch box
        • Dry bag for electronics and extra clothing
        • Powerbank
        • Toiletries (sunscreen, hand sanitizer, bug spray, toilet paper, etc.)
        • Personal medication
        • Headlamp or flashlight
        • Sunglasses
        • Camera — optional (but recommended)

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season and activity. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.

    • Yes. Luggage transportation between mountain huts is included throughout the trek, so you only need to carry a day pack with what you need for the day. Your main luggage is transferred ahead of you and will be waiting at each hut when you arrive.

    • Showers are available at each mountain hut, though they typically come at an extra cost (around 1,100 ISK), paid directly to the hut warden. The exception is the final night in Þórsmörk, where the cabin’s showers are included.

    • Group sizes and pricing

        • For this small-group Laugavegur Trail hike, the usual client-to-guide ratio is 10:1.
        • It takes a minimum of 6 people for this tour to operate. The maximum group size is set at 17 participants.

Small-group Laugavegur Trail hikes can be arranged for larger groups. Contact us to make arrangements.

      Min. age requirements

        • If you are older than 18, you’re good to go.
        • Minors younger than 18 may be permitted to join the small-group Laugavegur Trail hike on a case-by-case basis, but must be in the presence of a parent or legal guardian.

    • No, single occupancy rooms aren’t an option as you’ll be staying in mountain huts, in shared dormitories.

    • The starting point of your small-group Laugavegur Trail hike is Reykjavík, Iceland. To get there, most people fly into Keflavik Airport (KEF). From there, it’s best to take shuttle service or public transport to Reykjavik.

Once you’re there, you will meet your guide around 10 am in Reykjavík. You will decide on the exact meeting spot after booking.

Since the trek starts in the morning of Day 1, it’s best you arrive a day prior to the start of the adventure.
