This Douro bike and wine tour offers an unforgettable exploration of Portugal’s Douro Valley, where guided bike tours and scenic boat cruises unveil the region’s rich wine-making heritage and breathtaking landscapes. Pedal through terraced vineyards, historic villages, and picturesque towns, and sample authentic port wines! With all-inclusive meals and gear provided, this guided bike and boat tour provides a seamless and immersive experience amidst the stunning beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

    • Arrive at Porto Airport—located just 18 km from the city center—no later than 3 pm, when check-in on board the ALVA begins. At 4:30 pm, our guide welcomes us aboard, docked on the south bank of the Douro with sweeping views of Porto’s Old Town and the iconic Ponte Dom Luís I. We then set off on a guided walking tour of the city, taking in its colorful riverfront houses and rich history stretching back to Roman times. The evening ends with dinner on board, moored overnight in Porto.

      Meals: Dinner
      Accommodation: ALVA cruise ship

Dom Luís I Bridge in Porto
    • We depart Porto before breakfast, sailing upriver toward Peso da Régua, the capital of the Alto Douro — the world’s oldest protected wine region. After lunch on board, we set off on our first cycling stage, descending gently toward the Douro through sweeping river valley views. We finish in Pinhão, the geographical heart of Port wine country, surrounded by famous quintas. The evening is spent at a dinner and Portuguese cultural evening hosted at one of these manor houses.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
      Cycling: 25 km (16 mi)
      Accommodation: ALVA cruise ship

      Douro River in Pinhão
    • Before the ship sets sail, we head out on a morning bike ride through the mountainous hinterlands north of the river, passing through the village of Sabrosa — birthplace of Ferdinand Magellan — and winding through vineyards along the Rio Pinhão back to the boat. In the afternoon, we relax on the sun deck as the ship navigates toward the Spanish border, passing through the wild and serene Douro Natural Park. We moor overnight at Barca d’Alva, where the border between Portugal and Spain runs through the middle of the river.

      Cycling: 23 km (15 mi)
      Accommodation: ALVA cruise ship

Cruising by terraced vineyards on the banks of the Douro River
    • We spend the day on a longer cycling adventure through this remote border landscape, riding south toward the star-shaped fortified town of Almeida — one of Portugal’s best-preserved fortresses, with walls dating back through centuries of conflict and last used during the Napoleonic Wars. On our return to the Douro, we pass through quiet farming valleys and catch sight of the hilltop fortress of Castelo Rodrigo before a final descent with panoramic views of the river valley.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
      Cycling: 59 km (37 mi)
      Accommodation: ALVA cruise ship

      Douro River in Barca d’Alva
    • The ship stays anchored at the Spanish border through midday, giving us time for one more ride on the north bank of the river. Shuttled up to the high plateau, we begin our descent from the hamlet of Poiares, riding through a wild and secluded gorge with dramatic views at every turn. Back on board, we enjoy lunch as the ship heads downstream through the heart of the Alto Douro. We spend the afternoon on the sun deck soaking in the steep river bends before arriving back in Pinhão for the night.

      Cycling in the Portuguese countryside
    • After breakfast we sail to Régua, where a minibus takes us to Lamego—a historic town elevated to a bishopric in the 7th century and famous for its monumental Baroque double staircase leading to the church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. We start our ride from this hilltop vantage point, descending through Lamego’s old town and along a scenic route back to the riverbank at Peso da Régua. We then continue by boat toward Porto, stopping for the night at the river port of Cais da Lixa.

In the evening, our guide leads us through Vila Nova de Gaia to a traditional Port wine cellar, where we tour the “cathedral of wine” and enjoy a tasting. We gather for a farewell dinner on board, moored one last night in Porto.

    • To join this Douro Valley e-bike & boat tour, good fitness is required. Over the course of the trip, you’ll cover a total of approximately 185–200 km (116–125 mi) by e-bike.

The most you’ll cycle within a day is up to 59 km (37 mi). While northern Portugal is mountainous, the routes are designed to make the most of the terrain—you’ll spend more time cycling downhill than up, and all gradients are easily manageable on an e-bike. Most riding takes place on quiet, low-traffic country roads. Two days see slightly more traffic than usual: day 5, and day 6 through the town of Lamego. Check the itinerary for day-by-day distances.
