  • This Dolomites Alta Via 1 guided hiking adventure is designed for walkers who want a fun, all-inclusive experience on one of the world’s most famous alpine routes. Hike hut to hut with expert guides, a small, like-minded group, and seamless logistics handled from start to finish. From iconic Dolomite scenery to welcoming rifugios and great food, this is classic Alta Via 1 done comfortably, confidently, and with plenty of shared laughs along the way.

    • We meet our guide and fellow travelers at Venice Airport in the early afternoon and set off by private transfer toward the Dolomites. As we leave the lowlands behind, the scenery gradually shifts to dramatic limestone peaks and alpine valleys, offering a first glimpse of the landscapes we’ll be walking through in the days ahead. We arrive in the quiet village of Pocol, just above Cortina d’Ampezzo, where we check into our hotel and take time to settle in. Later, we gather for a full trip briefing and orientation with our guide, covering the route, daily expectations, and logistics. We enjoy our first dinner together before resting up for the start of the Alta Via.

      Meals: Dinner
      Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Pocol

      Passo Falzarego
    • After a short transfer toward Passo Falzarego, we begin our first hike of the Alta Via 1 with a steady ascent to Col dei Bos, where wide views open over the Travenanzes Valley. We descend through mountain pastures to Passo Falzarego before climbing again toward the Averau Pass, surrounded by the towering peaks of the Tofane group. The route then eases as we descend toward the Scoiattoli Refuge and the spectacular Cinque Torri, five dramatic stone towers rising from alpine meadows and larch forests. We arrive at our mountain refuge in time to relax, take in the scenery, and enjoy a well-earned evening in a true high-alpine setting.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
      Hiking: 10 km (6.2 mi), 5 hours
      Elevation: +850 m / −580 m (2,790 ft / 1,905 ft)
      Accommodation: Cinque Torri rifugio
Luggage access: Yes, just a daypack to carry

      Mt Lagazuoi Italy
    • We leave the striking towers of Cinque Torri behind and traverse beneath the Nuvolau massif, entering a wilder and more remote section of the Dolomites. The trail climbs gently to Forcella Ambrizzola, where expansive views open over forests and jagged peaks surrounding Cortina d’Ampezzo. From here, our route offers two scenic options depending on conditions: a higher, more rugged crossing via the Formin Pass or a softer descent toward Federa Lake, set beneath the sheer walls of Croda da Lago. Both routes deliver dramatic alpine scenery and a strong sense of remoteness. We finish the day at our mountain refuge, tucked into a high alpine basin.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
      Hiking: 11.8–16.1 km (7.3–10 mi), 4.5-5.5 hours
      Elevation: +460–800 m / −670–1,010 m (1,510–2,625 ft / 2,200–3,315 ft)
Accommodation: Croda da Lago or Malga Federa rifugio
Luggage access: No, overnight pack to carry

      Hiker, Cinque Torri in Italy
    • From the Ambrizzola area, we follow a series of beautiful balcony trails across open pastures, crossing several passes with ever-changing perspectives on Mount Pelmo and the Civetta massif. The scenery feels vast and open, with long traverses broken by gentle climbs and descents. As we move beneath Pelmo’s immense scree slopes, we pass through larch forests before reaching Passo Staulanza. A final ascent brings us to the Coldai saddle, where the views toward Civetta are especially impressive. We end the day at Coldai Refuge, dramatically positioned above a small alpine lake.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
      Hiking: 16.7 km (10.4 mi), 6 hours
      Elevation: +860 m / −770 m (2,820 ft / 2,525 ft)
      Accommodation: Coldai rifugio
Luggage access: Available in the evening, but overnight pack to carry during the day

      Beautiful Mount Pelmo
    • Today delivers one of the most spectacular stages of the Alta Via. We traverse beneath the towering north face of the Civetta, following a dramatic balcony trail that feels both exposed and awe-inspiring. Above us rise over 1,200 meters of sheer limestone walls; far below, villages and Lake Alleghe appear as tiny shapes in the valley. The path is steady and rewarding, leading us through a sequence of hanging valleys and open viewpoints before reaching Refuge Vazzoler, one of the most beloved huts on the route. The setting is peaceful, framed by forest and rock.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
      Hiking: 15.2 km (9.4 mi), 5-5.5 hours
      Elevation: +720 m / −770 m (2,360 ft / 2,525 ft)
      Accommodation: Vazzoler rifugio
Luggage access: No, overnight pack to carry

      Lago Coldai in the Dolomites
    • We climb steadily this morning toward Col Palanzin and then Forcella dell’Orso, moving through a rugged and less-traveled landscape dominated by the spires and towers of the Moiazza group. The terrain feels wild and elemental, with a strong sense of isolation. After a pause at Forcella del Camp, the character of the hike shifts as we traverse open slopes before a final climb beneath Cima Duran. Soon, the roofs of Passo Duran Refuge come into view, marking the end of our final full hiking day in the Dolomites.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
      Hiking: 11.6 km (7.2 mi), 5 hours
      Elevation: +630 m / −750 m (2,065 ft / 2,460 ft)
      Accommodation: Passo Duran rifugio
Luggage access: Available in the evening, but overnight pack to carry during the day

      Hiking Forcella Ambriolla
    • After breakfast, we say goodbye to the high mountains and transfer by private vehicle to Longarone. From here, onward connections to Cortina d’Ampezzo or Venice are straightforward by train or bus. The journey comes to a close after a full crossing of some of the most dramatic terrain in the Dolomites, leaving us with lasting memories of limestone peaks, alpine refuges, and days spent walking high above the valleys.

    • The following items are required for this Dolomites Alta Via 1 guided tour unless otherwise noted. When packing, think layered clothing systems that work together and can be easily added or removed. Luggage transfers have a limit of 33lbs/15kg—please stick to this as extra items are not easily stored by the team.

Avoid cotton or cycling-specific clothing. Synthetic fabrics dry quickly and perform well in active conditions. Merino wool is also an excellent option—it dries fast, is comfortable to wear, and naturally resists odors even after extended use.

      Clothing:

        • Hiking boots/shoes — waterproof, sturdy molded sole, deep tread and ideally well broken in
        • Hiking socks — one pair for every day or two days of the trip (hiking/sport specific padded socks, no cotton please)
        • Sun hat — wide brimmed hat or baseball cap/bandana combo
        • Warm hat & gloves — lightweight beanie and light-to-mid weight fleece or wool gloves
        • Hiking shirts — non-cotton, breathable short sleeve and/or long sleeve shirts
        • Warm top — mid-weight sweater or pullover of wicking material such as merino wool, fleece or polypropylene
        • Insulating jacket — down-fill or synthetic-fill insulated “puffy” jacket or warm, heavy weight fleece jacket
        • Hiking pants & shorts — nylon pants and shorts, zip-offs or leggings
        • Base layer/long underwear — 1 pair of wicking tops and bottoms that are lightweight to midweight, synthetic wicking materials such as polyester, polypropylene, merino wool, etc.
        • Rain gear — waterproof jacket and pants or high-quality poncho, breathable fabric such as Gore-Tex® or coated nylon (for the pants look for side zippers that will easily allow pulling them over footwear)
        • Casual clothing & footwear – comfortable clothes and shoes to wear in the evening after activities.

      Gear:

        • Backpack — a 30–45 liter sized comfortable pack with a waterproof cover for use day-to-day while hiking
        • Personal luggage — small duffel bag, rolling suitcase or backpack
        • Hydration system — 2+ liters capacity, either water bottles or bladder/hose system and an additional water bottle
        • Trekking poles — telescopic/adjustable poles to help reduce the impact on joints and support hikers in steep and/or rocky terrain (strongly recommended)
        • Headlamp — preferably with an L.E.D. bulb that works with AA or AAA batteries
        • Picnic/lunch kit — knife, plate or bowl, box with closeable lid, utensils, etc.
        • Phone, charger, power bank
        • Waterproof travel case or pouch — used to keep important documents (i.e. passport, health/travel insurance, etc.) & phone safe from weather/water
        • Sunglasses, sunscreen, & lip balm
        • First aid kit
        • Personal toilet paper kit — toilet paper, wet wipes, sanitizer & sealable plastic bag(s) for carrying out used paper/wipes
        • Toiletries
        • Contact lenses & glasses
        • Prescription medication — with emergency back-up supply
        • Cash in local currency

      First aid kit suggestions:

Carrying a basic personal first aid kit is strongly advised, as unforeseen situations may arise during travel. Access to medications and first aid supplies can be limited in certain destinations, making it essential to bring necessary prescription and over-the-counter items. Travel plans, vaccinations, and medication use should be reviewed with a healthcare provider in advance to ensure a safe and smooth journey.

Here’s a basic list of what’s generally a good personal travel first aid kit:

        • Medications — brands of choice; all medications should be prescribed or approved by a doctor prior to use
        • Prescription drugs — any required prescriptions with backup doses (kept in carry-on luggage)
        • Epinephrine — multiple doses recommended if severe allergies are present, with doctor prescription
        • Pain relief — ibuprofen, aspirin, non-aspirin (e.g., Tylenol)
        • Antihistamine — diphenhydramine (e.g., Benadryl)
        • Non-drowsy allergy relief — loratadine (e.g., Claritin)
        • Antacid/heartburn relief — bismuth (e.g., Pepto-Bismol), antacid tablets
        • Anti-diarrheal — loperamide hydrochloride (e.g., Imodium)
        • Cold/flu medicine
        • Electrolyte replacement/drink mix
        • Creams — antibiotic ointment, anti-itch (hydrocortisone), arnica
        • Eye problems: dry/itchy — eye drops
        • Feminine hygiene — tampons, pads
        • Wound care — assorted bandages, antiseptic swabs
        • Blister kit
        • Sun protection — sunscreen, SPF lip balm
        • Various items — athletic tape/“KT tape,” nail clippers, tweezers, small bottle of hand sanitizer, sewing kit (for clothing/button repairs), disposable surgical gloves (1–2 pairs)

      Optional items:

        • Face masks — 2–3 recommended
        • Travel power adapter — electric power voltage in Italy is 230 V / 50 Hz and the plugs are F & L type
        • Support braces — joint braces if currently needed or from past injuries (e.g., knee, ankle, elbow)
        • Sleep mask & ear plugs
        • Bug repellent
