  • The Classic is a slightly shorter version of the trail, starting from Lake Tekapo rather than Aoraki/Mt Cook, and based out of Christchurch. At 6 days and with an average of around 55 km (34 mi) per day, it's a superb introduction to the A2O for those with less time or who prefer to ease in a little more gently—without compromising on the scenery. Includes 5 nights' accommodation in motels and lodges, all meals from lunch on Day 1 through breakfast on Day 6, full vehicle and luggage support, and transport from Christchurch (return).

    • After an early start from Christchurch, we cross the Canterbury Plains and stop for refreshments in the country town of Geraldine before continuing through rolling farmland to Burke’s Pass, the gateway to Mackenzie Country. Lake Tekapo arrives as a vivid turquoise surprise. After lunch and a group briefing, we set off cycling around the lake to the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd, then follow the hydro canals to a high terrace with sweeping views over Lake Pukaki and the mountains beyond—including Aoraki/Mt Cook. We load up and drive to Twizel, home base for the next two nights.

      Meals: Lunch, dinner
Cycling: Up to 34 km (21 mi)
      Accommodation: The Alps Motel, Twizel

      Lake Tekapo in New Zealand
    • We head back to Lake Pukaki after breakfast and hop on the bikes for a lakeside ride across the tussock-lands back toward Twizel. After a quick change, we drive north to Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park—New Zealand’s highest peaks, a UNESCO World Heritage site. After a picnic lunch, choose from several hikes: the Red Tarns Track (3.7 km / 2.3 mi; 330 m / 1,083 ft gain), Kea Point Track to the foot of Mt Sefton’s glacier (5 km / 3.1 mi return), the Tasman Glacier Viewpoint (3 km / 1.9 mi), or the Mueller Lake Lookout via the Hooker Track (1.8 km / 1.1 mi). The Department of Conservation visitor centre is also worth a visit.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Cycling: Approx. 19 km (12 mi)
Hiking: Up to 10 km (6 mi) depending on track chosen
      Accommodation: The Alps Motel, Twizel

    • Stunning scenery continues as we ride alongside the Pukaki and Ohau canals, with the mountains as a constant backdrop, then along Lake Ohau where we stop for lunch. Confident riders can push on along the trail to the Tarnbrae Saddle (900 m / 2,953 ft)—the high point of the entire A2O—where the views over the Mackenzie Country are exceptional. Those who’d prefer a more relaxed afternoon can transfer to the historic woolshed at Quailburn for an easier, mostly downhill run into Omarama. Tonight, keep an eye on the sky: Omarama’s name means “place of light” in Māori, and its skies are among the clearest in New Zealand.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Cycling: 64 km (40 mi) short option / 83 km (52 mi) long option
      Accommodation: Sierra Motel, Omarama

    • Today the trail takes us down the Waitaki Valley, following the shores of Lake Benmore to Sailors Cutting. From there, we wind around rocky outcrops and past secluded beaches before the trail drops from above Benmore Dam back to the lakeside road—a more technical section with a van option for those who prefer it. A fun downhill toward Aviemore Dam brings us to our picnic spot, and from there it’s a scenic run into Kurow. We arrive with time to explore; highlights include the beautifully restored St Albans Church and wine tasting at a local vineyard. Dinner tonight showcases local produce at an elegant lodge.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
      Cycling: 67 km (42 mi)
Accommodation: Waitaki Braids Lodge, Kurow (or Riverside B&B depending on group size; ensuite not always guaranteed)

    • The Waitaki River is our companion this morning as we follow the trail along its banks past vineyards and a Māori rock art site to the small town of Duntroon. From there we head inland into rolling country and take a wander through the Elephant Rocks—huge limestone formations scattered across a paddock. Back on the bikes, we pick up an old railway line and ride through Raki’s tunnel before rolling downhill to the settlement of Windsor. The historic Burnside Homestead is tonight’s base—fitting surroundings for our last evening together, with dinner at the local Enfield pub.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
      Cycling: 68 km (42 mi)
Accommodation: Burnside Homestead, Windsor (heritage property; not all rooms have ensuite facilities)

    • One final ride before we point the van north. Setting off from the homestead, we roll through picturesque rural countryside past the Oamaru stone quarry—where stone has been quarried since the 19th century—and its influence shows clearly in the local architecture. After cycling through the town’s municipal gardens, we reach the Victorian Precinct and the harbourside park where the A2O finish-line sign makes for the perfect photo. If time allows, browse the galleries and shops or visit the Steampunk HQ museum before a late lunch and the drive back to Christchurch, arriving early evening.

    • Both tours follow the same iconic trail through the same spectacular South Island scenery, with the same guiding team, full vehicle support, and all meals included. The differences come down to starting point, duration, and a few key experiences.

Choose the Alps to Ocean Classic (6 days) if you:

        • Have less time or prefer a slightly shorter, more relaxed week on the bike
        • Are happy to start and finish in Christchurch—no extra flights needed
        • Want to ease into the trail from Lake Tekapo, skipping the very first section from Aoraki/Mt Cook
        • Prefer a slightly lower average daily distance (~230 km / 143 mi total across 5 riding days)
        • Are a first-time long-distance cyclist or want more flexibility via the short-option days

Choose the Alps to Ocean End to End (7 days) if you:

        • Want to cycle the trail in full, from its official start at Aoraki/Mt Cook to the Pacific
        • Are up for the most cinematic opening to a cycling trip in New Zealand—a helicopter flight across the Tasman River to the trailhead is included
        • Don’t mind starting in Queenstown and ending in Christchurch (one-way travel logistics)
        • Are comfortable with a longer week on the bike (~320 km / 200 mi total, with one 80 km / 50 mi day that has no short option)
        • Want the full sweep of accommodation highlights—including a night at Braemar Station, a remote high-country farmstay with views straight to Aoraki
    • Both itineraries require good fitness. The average daily distance across both trips is around 55–60 km (34–37 mi), and your guides recommend building up to 90 minutes of cycling, 3 to 5 times a week, for at least 3 months before the tour—ideally with some time on hills and loose terrain.

The terrain is a mix: some sections run on sealed roads or firm-packed gravel and are straightforward; others involve looser gravel, narrower tracks with switchbacks, and some exposure. The two trickier stretches on both tours are the Tarnbrae Saddle crossing and the section from Sailors Cutting to Benmore Dam. Your guides will brief you ahead of both, and the support vehicle is always available if you’d rather skip them.

      Where the two trips differ:

The End to End is the more demanding of the two. The longest day clocks in at 80 km (50 mi), and the overall mileage is higher—320 km (200 mi) across 6 riding days. Day 3, from Braemar Station to Lake Ohau, is a full 80 km (50 mi) with no short option.

The Classic is a slightly gentler entry point. The longest day is up to 83 km (52 mi) on Day 3 if you take the long route over the Tarnbrae Saddle, but the short option brings it down to 64 km (40 mi). Total riding distance is around 230 km (143 mi) across 5 riding days.

On both tours, no one is ever left behind—the support vehicle is there if you need it, and less confident riders can skip technical sections entirely without missing the destination.

    • In preparation for this adventure, we recommend dedicating 90 minutes to cycling three to five times a week for at least three months leading up to your trip. This practice will help you build the endurance and stamina required for the journey. There are ample hills to conquer, so it’s advisable to practice cycling uphill and on rougher terrain before your tour to ensure you fully appreciate the fantastic riding and diverse scenery.

The two trickier stretches on both tours are the Tarnbrae Saddle crossing and the section from Sailors Cutting to Benmore Dam. Your guides will brief you ahead of both, and the support vehicle is always available if you’d rather skip them.

    • The tour is fully supported so you won’t have to carry anything. If hiring one of our bikes, it will have a rear saddle bag with enough space to put an extra layer, your camera, wallet, phone etc. We recommend you pack your luggage in a soft sports bag for easy stowing in the trailer/ vehicle. We urge you to keep your luggage to a minimum. If you have extra luggage you do not require for your holiday, we can arrange to store it until the end of the trip.

    • To get to Queenstown, most people fly into Queenstown Airport. You will meet your guide and fellow cyclists at a central location in the city at 8.00 am on Day 1.

We recommend arriving a day prior to the cycling adventure as our journey kicks off right after this initial gathering. Arriving a day in advance provides you with the opportunity to relax and ensures a seamless and stress-free start to your experience.

Please keep in mind that the adventure finishes in Christchurch in the late afternoon on the last day. We advise against booking an international flight immediately after the tour, as there’s a considerable risk of missing your flight should your group’s arrival in the city be delayed. We highly recommend arranging accommodation in Christchurch following the adventure.
