  • The full Laugavegur experience, with one more day added on: a detour over Fimmvörðuháls, the high pass between two glaciers. We cross the 2010 eruption's lava field, pass the Magni and Móði craters, and take on some of the trail's most dramatic, exposed terrain—a fitting finish for experienced hikers.

    • We take the public bus from the BSI bus terminal at 6:30/7am, which, during the summer months, follows mountain tracks leading to Landmannalaugar, passing by the Hekla volcano and other volcanoes in the Dómadalur area. Arriving in Landmannalaugar at noon, we have lunch before heading south into the mountains. The trail takes us through small gorges, past steaming hot springs, and along striking yellow mountain ridges. We arrive at the Hrafntinnusker mountain hut in the late afternoon, where we will spend the night.

As we approach the ancient, green-covered Hattfell volcano, we enter the Emstrur region, once used by farmers for summer sheep grazing. Before reaching the Botnar hut for the night, we take a detour to admire the breathtaking Markarfljót canyon, which plunges nearly 200 meters into the rugged landscape south of Hattfell.

      Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles)

As we ascend further, we reach the craters Magni and Móði, formed just before the main Eyjafjallajökull eruption. We then make our way back to Þórsmörk, enjoying breathtaking glacier and valley views before celebrating with a barbecue dinner and a cozy night at Básar Hut.

        • Guide gratuities — optional
    • All three routes follow the same iconic trail from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk—the difference is pace, and on the 6-day route, one extra day of terrain.

        • 4-Day Trek — the fastest way to hike the full trail, covering 4 to 7 hours a day over four consecutive days. Best for fit hikers who are comfortable covering more ground daily and want to fit the trek into a shorter trip.
        • 5-Day Trek — the classic Laugavegur pace, with slightly shorter daily hikes and a half-day exploring Þórsmörk’s valleys before heading back to Reykjavík.
        • 6-Day Trek — adds the Fimmvörðuháls hike on Day 5: 20 km (12.5 mi) of very challenging terrain with 1,000 m (3,280 ft) of elevation gain. This day has some extremely steep drop-offs along the trail and some scrambling with the use of a chain both up and down, so it’s not suited for those with a fear of heights or those not ready for steep drop-offs.
    • For the Laugavegur Trail, you need to be able to hike for 4, 5, or 6 consecutive days while carrying a daypack. Each day you will hike between 4 and 7 hours. On top of that, volcanic terrain can be challenging and the weather unforgiving. That said, if you are looking for adventure and up to the task of multiple days of full-day trekking, you’ll be rewarded immensely!

        • 4-day Laugavegur: 17 km (10.5 mi), 6-7 hours, with up to 470 m (1,540 ft) of elevation gain on Day 1. Since it covers the same overall route in fewer days, the daily pace is faster and there’s less rest between hiking days.
        • 5-day Laugavegur: 19 km (12 mi), 7 hours, 470 m (1,540 ft) of elevation gain.
        • 6-day Laugavegur: 20 km (12.5 mi), 7 hours, 1,000 m (3,280 ft) of elevation change on the Fimmvörðuháls day, which is not suited for those with a fear of heights or those not ready for steep drop-offs.
        • For day-by-day distances and elevation changes, check out the itinerary!

In terms of backpack weight, you will only need to carry a smaller day backpack with your lunch, water bottle, medication, sunglasses, river crossing shoes, rain gear, and other items or clothing you might need for the day. A great thing about this trip is that luggage transfers are included, making your hiking experience far more comfortable.

    • The Laugavegur Trail is a roughly 55 km (35 mi) hut-to-hut hiking route through Iceland’s Southern Highlands, running from the geothermal area of Landmannalaugar to the sheltered birch valley of Þórsmörk. Along the way you cross black volcanic deserts, steaming geothermal vents, glacier-fed rivers, and colorful rhyolite mountains—it’s consistently ranked among the most scenic multi-day treks in the world. Most hikers cover it in 4 to 6 days, staying in mountain huts rather than camping. This guided version runs it as a 5-day or 6-day trip, with the 6-day adding an extra day over the Fimmvörðuháls Pass.

    • Fimmvörðuháls is a high volcanic pass between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers, connecting the Laugavegur Trail to Þórsmörk by a higher, more dramatic route than the standard final day. It crosses the lava field from the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption, passing the Magni and Móði craters formed that year, with glacier views on both sides. The trail here is narrower than the rest of the route, with some steep drop-offs and a section requiring hand-over-hand scrambling with a fixed chain. It’s the reason the 6-day version of this tour isn’t recommended for anyone with a fear of heights—the 4 and 5-day routes to avoid it entirely.

    • Here’s a list of the equipment you need to bring:

        • A duffel bag for the transport of your overnight gear between mountain huts
        • Day backpack for extra clothes and lunch pack during the day (around a 25-40L bag)
        • Your own sleeping bag – a basic sleeping bag with no specific temperature rating is sufficient for this entire trek since all the mountain huts are heated (available to rent)
        • Small thermal mat to sit on — optional
        • Hiking poles — optional (available to rent)
        • Gaiters — optional but recommended for departures in June and early July
        • Gloves – wool or synthetic 2 pairs of different thickness
        • Long sleeve shirt (thermal underwear) – wool or synthetic
        • T-shirt (thermal underwear) – wool or synthetic
        • Light wool or fleece sweater (2nd layer)
        • Warm, down jacket
        • Puffy jacket e.g. Primaloft — optional
        • Jacket with a good hood – windproof, waterproof and breathable, e.g. Gore-Tex or comparable
        • Soft-shell trousers – strong and light material that dries quickly
        • Rain pants – windproof, waterproof and breathable — full raingear is mandatory in Iceland, poncho is not useful because of wind
        • Socks – wool or synthetic
        • Change of clothes for wearing in the hut
        • Sunhat
        • Wool hat
        • Sturdy hiking boots – waterproof with good ankle support
        • River crossing shoes – walking sandals or old running shoes with a good grip are a good choice, along with a pair of warm socks or neoprene socks
        • Comfortable shoes for the camp
        • Quick dry towel – lightweight and packable
        • Swimwear if you want to bathe in the hot geothermal pool in Landmannalaugar
        • Toiletries (sunscreen, hand sanitizer, bug spray, etc.)
        • Water bottle or hydration bladder (2L capacity)
        • Lunch box
        • Pocket knife
        • Aperitif or other heart-warming spirits – liquor laws in Iceland prohibit the sale of alcohol, so having a thermos flask to share with your fellow travelers in front of the campfire can be the crowning of a good day — optional
        • Headlamp or flashlight
        • Sunglasses
        • Earplugs
        • Portable power bank
        • Dry-bags for electronics and extra clothing — optional
        • Camera — optional (but recommended)

Dress comfortably and for the weather in warm clothes you can move in. Iceland is home to infamously unpredictable weather, so you need to be prepared with the right gear.

There is a limited space on the luggage trailer, so try to pack light out of consideration to other passengers on the tour and use a a waterproof duffel bag which is easier to store. If you have extra luggage that you would like to leave, we recommend storing luggage at the BSI Bus terminal (fees apply) or another luggage storage space in Reykjavik.
