In general, be prepared to walk! These towns are pedestrian-friendly only. Not only are there virtually no options for assisted transportation, but the towns themselves are hilly, so it’s common to encounter stairs—sometimes very long ones. It is suggested that you undertake regular exercise two to three times a week for three months prior to your departure to maximize your experience once here.

    • Here’s a list of the equipment you need to bring:

        • Day pack large enough to carry all the items listed (around a 25-40L bag)
        • Hiking poles — optional
        • Water bottle or hydration bladder (2L capacity)
        • Lightweight hiking boots or shoes
        • Comfortable hiking clothes
        • Clothing for the evenings
        • Spare clothes for layering
        • Waterproof rain jacket
        • Sunhat
        • Toiletries (sunscreen, hand sanitizer, bug spray, etc.)
        • Headlamp or flashlight
        • Sunglasses
        • Camera — optional (but recommended)

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans. You will stay in the same village for the whole week, so you only need to carry a daypack with you for the walks.

    • To get to Riomaggiore, the starting point of your Cinque Terre hiking adventure where you’ll stay for a week, most people fly into Pisa International Airport (PSA). From there, you can rent a car or take a train or shuttle to Riomaggiore which is just over an hour away.

Day 1 of the adventure is all about arrival, but we recommend arriving early enough to spend the rest of the day discovering the vibrant village of Riomaggiore.
