  • Experience the varied natural wonders of New Zealand’s North Island with a local guide over 8 days! Explore the peaks, jungles, volcanoes, and waterfalls of Whirinaki and other iconic areas along New Zealand’s bucket-list trails. Spend your evenings in cozy campsites and bustling huts, swimming in pristine lakes, eating delicious food, and sleeping under the starry skies.

    • We meet at 7am in downtown Auckland before travelling south to Rotorua, stopping for coffee on the way. Rotorua is known for its geothermal activity, volcanic landscapes, and rich Māori history shaped by the 1886 Mt Tarawera eruption. From Lake Tarawera we take a midday water taxi to access the trail, hiking beside clear lake waters under towering tree ferns and ignimbrite cliffs, with time for a swim and wide views across forest, lakes, and distant volcanoes.

    • After packing our gear, we drive east into the rugged forest ranges of Te Urewera, the traditional homeland of the Tūhoe people and one of the last regions settled by Europeans. By late morning we reach the Whirinaki Forest trail, a preserved remnant of ancient Gondwana forest. Our hike follows the beautiful Whirinaki River through towering podocarp rainforest up to a forest clearing, where a simple kiwi-style backcountry hut stands beside the water. Tonight we cook dinner together, with time for an evening fire and chat before easing into the wilderness at your own pace, whether that means sleeping in the hut or camping under the stars.

    • This morning we continue a short distance up the main valley before crossing into a neighboring river valley on a rougher, lesser-used stream trail, Whirinaki at its wildest, with towering forest and few other visitors. We often spot whiō (blue ducks) and robins, and hear the distinctive call of the kākā (bush parrot) along the way, a route that gives a real taste of New Zealand backcountry hiking. We stop at a small backcountry hut for a relaxed lunch and a memorable splash down a river section before eventually rejoining the valley we started from yesterday, completing the loop. A short drive brings us to a cabin on a nearby rural property, where we unwind with a hot shower and an evening by the fire pit.

    • Today is a travel-focused day as we drive onto the Volcanic Plateau. Along the way we explore geothermal highlights, bathe in a natural hot river, and feel the power of Huka Falls as the Waikato River plunges into a roaring gorge. At Lake Taupō, the largest lake in New Zealand, we enjoy takeaway food by the shore before continuing to Tongariro National Park. We arrive at our lodge near Whakapapa Village in time to relax and prepare for the alpine days ahead.

    • We swap the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing for its quieter eastern counterpart, the Tongariro Northern Circuit, exploring a side of this volcanic landscape far fewer visitors see. After sorting gear for two nights away, we set off in the late morning, climbing gently through open tussock country and crossing the saddle between Ruapehu and Ngāuruhoe. The views grow more dramatic with every step as we move deeper into the heart of the national park. By late afternoon we reach Waihohonu Hut, tucked beside a quiet stream among pockets of mountain beech forest, a peaceful spot to settle in and enjoy the alpine surroundings.

    • Today’s shorter distance to Oturere Hut leaves plenty of time to explore. Depending on conditions and the group, we may detour off-trail across ash-moraine ridges and below lava cliffs to a remote lake viewpoint, or visit the clear waters of Ohinepango Springs. Either way, the park’s volcanic scenery is on full display today, with its three main peaks, Ruapehu, Tongariro, and Ngāuruhoe (which played Mount Doom in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings), rising around us. We traverse a stony desert landscape to reach Oturere Hut, perched on the edge of an old lava flow. We usually sleep in the hut, though occasionally we camp instead.

    • Today we tackle the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, one of the world’s great day hikes. We start by crossing a moon-like valley of lava flows and ash fields before climbing steeply to the Emerald Lakes, a view that’s graced the cover of more than a few guidebooks. From here we join the main Alpine Crossing route, continuing through a dramatic landscape of lava valleys, steaming vents, and brooding volcanic peaks before our final descent past mineral streams and alpine vegetation. In good conditions, there’s an option to climb higher on the volcanic peaks. A short drive returns us to our lodge in the heart of the national park, the perfect place to relax with a drink and take in the views before dinner in the alpine village.

    • We drive south, leaving the volcanic plateau behind and descending through the river valleys of the Rangitīkei before following the coast to Wellington. After a café stop, we arrive mid-afternoon. The compact capital city is known for its arts, culture, museums, and vibrant café scene. The remainder of the day is free to explore on foot, visit Te Papa, or simply enjoy the harbour-side atmosphere.

    • For this adventure, you need to have great fitness and basic mountain biking skills. Prior hiking experience is generally required for this tour, but multi-day hiking experience is not necessary.

Your average day will involve 4-5 hours of physical activity, with the number of hours decreasing on more laid-back days and increasing to up to 8-9 hours on more challenging days. Altitude gain won’t be greater than circa 800 m (2,600 ft) while the maximum distance covered on any day is 15 km (9.3 mi).

Hikes will involve managing uneven terrain and crossing rivers while carrying a pack weighing up to 12 kilograms (26 pounds) on some days. The group will take breaks on a regular basis to get some rest and eat lunch and snacks.

Check the itinerary for day-by-day distances and elevation changes.

    • It’s best to bring two bags on your trip, a hiking backpack with an internal frame (minimum 50L) for overnight hikes, and a smaller daypack for day hikes.

Several layers of wool, polypropylene and/or polar fleece will ensure you remain a comfortable temperature regardless of the weather. No cotton shirt hiking/kayaking in the wet, please! Cotton gets cold when wet and it’s difficult to dry.

      Clothing you should bring:

        • Raincoat (gore-tex or similar)
        • Thermal underwear (top and bottom, wool or polypropylene)
        • Hiking boots or good hiking shoes
        • Spare lightweight shoes or sandals
        • Shorts or lightweight trousers (preferably quick-dry)
        • Short-sleeved shirt (quick-dry, polypropylene or wool)
        • Warm fleece/wool jersey (not cotton)
        • Socks
        • Warm hat or balaclava
        • Sun hat
        • Gloves or mittens (wool or fleece)
        • Swimsuit
        • Towel (lightweight travel towels are great)

Extra socks and polypropylene layers are always handy—ensure you have enough warm items! Comfortable clothing for non-hiking days as well. Spare clothing can be left in the secure trailer when we are away on the hikes, so don’t worry about the extra weight! Note that there are only limited opportunities to do laundry during a tour, so quick-drying clothing is an advantage.

      Equipment you should bring:

        • Backpack (minimum 50L)
        • Sleeping bag (minimum 3 season, preferably down, lightweight, between 1-2 kg)
        • Flashlight/headlamp
        • Drink bottle or camelback (1L)
        • Small daypack
        • Sunscreen and sunglasses
        • Insect repellent
        • Personal toiletries, medication, and first aid
        • Walking poles (optional)
        • Gaiters (optional)

This is what your guides will provide you with:

        • Pack-liner to keep things dry inside your backpack
        • Kit bag to hold your spare gear when you’re out hiking
        • Emergency first aid kit
        • Thermarests
        • Plates, cutlery, mugs, pots, etc.
        • Tents
    • The average driving time per day varies, some times you are in the wilderness and won’t see the vehicle for 2 or 3 days! On other days, you might be in the vehicle for 2-3 hours. The driving time is a chance to rest and enjoy the fantastic scenery. The guide will often stop the vehicle if there is a great photo opportunity or primo ice cream shop!

You will travel in a 12-seat minibus towing a custom-built trailer with camp equipment and your luggage. They are also equipped with a range of natural history reference books.
