  • There’s a reason why the Nordic lifestyle gets a lot of hype. Explore the Faroe Islands under the glow of the midnight sun or watch the northern lights from the deck. Regardless of the season, expect gradual hikes with jaw-dropping views as far as the eye can see. Sailing on Norðlýsið, the ship you’ll take from island to island across 80 nautical miles, is an adventure in itself. In addition to viewing rugged peaks and waterfalls dripping off Eysturoy’s rocky coastline, you’ll also gain a glimpse into the rich fishing and sailing traditions of the region.

You’ll hike through picturesque villages clothed in mist. Then, follow trails to the top of cliffs with sweeping coastal vistas and board a historic sailboat that will take you to scenic areas such as Gásadalur, Mykines and Gjógv. Get ready for eight days of island hopping in the lush Faroe Islands. You will hike over 82 km and visit over 15 incredible villages and cities. Immerse yourself fully in the ancestral relationship of the human being with the sea, the mythology of these lands, and rocks that guard its rugged but stunning coasts.

    • Meet your guides at the Vágar International Airport. Get settled in the quaint city of Sandavágur on the third largest island in the Faroe Islands. Once you’re briefed by your guides, and your personal materials have been reviewed, you’ll enjoy a welcome dinner at the Fiskastykkið restaurant. You’ll have time to rest before the dinner. The first night of your Faroe Islands tour will be spent in a guesthouse.

*Dinner at the Fiskastykkið restaurant not included

      Accommodation: Guesthouse
      Driving: 11 km

    • Over the next two days, you’ll explore the island of Vágar. Your guides will choose a different trail for each day depending on the weather. We’ll prepare for long day hikes along dramatic cliffs and wave-battered headlands, surrounded by open ocean. You’ll witness the raw power of offshore Atlantic swell, thousands of seabirds nesting in the steep rock walls, and the famous cascading Múlafossur Waterfall. If possible, your groups will visit the Trælanípan cliffs and bear witness to Lake Sørvágsvatn as it sits on the edge of a hundred foot bluff above the ocean. Hike through emerald green pastures used for centuries by Faroese shepherds, and aim to reach the old abandoned village of Víkar on the more remote reaches of the island. You’ll spend each night near Gásadalur, otherwise known as Geese Valley.

      * Depending on the weather conditions, the chosen trails for each day will be adjusted
      by the guides.

    • Today you’ll board the sailboat Norðlýsið, your home for the next three days. Settle into your bunks, have a safety briefing with the captain and crew, and prepare for cast off. Sail past Trøllkonufingur, otherwise known as the Witch’s Finger. Cross the Vestmannasund strait and head to shore with the RIB boat for a visit to Saksun, an old Viking village with a lake that served as a natural harbor for its inhabitants. Explore a rarely visited lagoon and as you hike up to Tjørnuvík, look back upon the thick grass-tufted roofs and architecture of a community shaped by the harshness of the elements. Hike the north end of the island to the black sand beaches by the Norðlýsið crew and head back back to the mothership.

Start the day hiking from the village of Eiði, passing by the famous rock formation Risin og Kellingin, GIant and the Witch. You’ll take in amazing views of the Faroe Islands, and if the day is clear, you might just see the icy peaks of the Vatnajökull Glacier, about 565 km away. From Slættaratindur, you’ll descend to the picturesque village of Gjógv with colorful houses. After exploring this picturesque seaside town, return to Norðlýsið to watch the sunset and enjoy a delicious Faroese dinner. Spend the night anchored in Leirvíksfjørður strait.

Walk through several remote villages where we’ll stop to enjoy the jagged headlands, piercing the sky like a row of shark teeth, and the booming thunder from crashing swell. The Kallur lighthouse sits upon a mighty throne — atop a sheer dramatic cliff displaying a wild beauty almost too picturesque to comprehend. Return to Syðradalur harbor after a long day of hiking, where the Norðlýsið crew will welcome you back aboard for the night.

Once moored at Nólsoy’s harbor, you’ll trek the mainland before spending the afternoon exploring Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands. • Hiking with a local guide means getting a chance to explore all the hidden corners of the remote Faroe Islands. Not only will you see the best of what the Faroe Islands have to offer, but you’ll learn about the mythology that shaped the local culture. You’ll also have an expert who knows the area well and knows just what to do if the weather takes a turn for the worse.

    • While you are on the island of Vágar and the last day in Tórshavn, the groups stay in twin rooms without distinction of gender and with shared bathrooms. During the sailing days you will stay in the Norðlýsið expedition sailboat. Travelers will sleep in the common cabin under the sailboat deck.

    • The diet of the Faroe Islands trip is conceived as a full board (breakfast, lunch and dinner) the days on the sailboat. The only meals not included are: dinner during the stay on the island of Vágar (days 1, 2 and 3) and dinner on day 7 in Tórshavn. Breakfast on day 8 at the accommodation is included. The lunch at noon will be picnic style to take full advantage of the daily trekking route, and will have to be loaded by travelers in their backpacks during the route.

Every day, the guides will prepare dinner and the travelers will participate in the cleaning. The guides will be in charge of coordinating the different group tasks among all the travelers. On the last day of the route there will be a stop on the way with the sailboat to fish, and then the fish will be prepared when returning on board.

In case of special dietary needs, please contact us and we can make arrangements.

    • You will be joining a group that usually consists of 7-12 people. Pricing is per person. The group gets confirmed at the moment that at least the minimum people (7 people) pays the 30% deposit of the final price. At that time, the group will be informed that the trip has been confirmed, and therefore that they can start booking their flights to Iceland.

If you are an individual traveler, you can join the group. The guide will be adding travelers until the minimum group size to confirm the trip can be guaranteed. There are no supplements to individual travelers, as they will share a room.

Everybody over the age of 18 is welcome on this hiking adventure.

    • The Faroe Islands are only a short flight from a variety of European destinations, such as Copenhagen (DK), Paris (FR), Reykjavik (IS), Edinburgh (UK), and Bergen (NO). Two airlines fly to the Faroe Islands. These are Atlantic Airways and Scandinavian Airlines.

Flights from Reykjavik, Edinburgh and Bergen to the Faroe Islands are only one hour long, and flights from Copenhagen last only two hours. Direct flights from Paris to the Faroe Islands last just under three hours.

Your guide will meet you at the Vágar Airport and take you to your accommodation in Vágar.

It is important for the correct development of the trip that the return flights don’t depart until 12.00am in the morning of the last day. Since the Faroe Islands capital is more than 50 km from the airport, this allows a correct rest for the guides and an enjoyment of breakfast for the whole group.

    • We highly recommended that you cover all your bases with both emergency medical and travel insurance. With medical insurance, if you have an accident or medical emergency on or off the mountain, you’ll avoid paying out of pocket for costly expenses. This covers everything from hospital treatments to emergency air transportation and more.

As we’ve recently seen, travel plans can be abruptly halted, so it’s a good idea to purchase travel insurance that covers cancelled flights, natural disasters and other scenarios that may interrupt your travel plans. For peace of mind, we suggest you consider both options of insurance.

If you need assistance selecting the right insurance for your group, let us know and we will be happy to help!
