  • The Škofjeloška Hills don't get the same press as the Julian Alps. That's exactly why we start there. Three days in medieval Škofja Loka: hiking to the ridge tops, stopping at an ironworking museum in Železniki, and dropping into the Pustotnik farm for a proper cheese tasting. Then the Julian Alps proper: we base in Bled for four hiking days across Pokljuka's sweeping plateau, Bohinj's glacial gorges, and Golica above the Karawanks. Every hike adapts to the group's pace. Accommodation, daily breakfasts, and a local guide are included, all that’s left is to join in.

    • You’ll arrive in the medieval town of Škofja Loka and check in at Hotel Zamorc on the banks of the Sora River. The afternoon is free to explore the old town: the 13th-century castle above the rooftops, the Baroque houses along the riverbank, and cobblestone streets that make a strong case for wandering before the night falls.

      Accommodation: Hotel Zamorc, Škofja Loka

      Skofja Loka city
    • We head up Blegoš, the highest peak in the Škofjeloško Hribovje range, on a hike of around 4 to 5 hours with approximately 600 m (1,970 ft) of elevation gain. On a clear day, the panoramic views stretch all the way to the Julian Alps. Back at valley level, we stop at the Pustotnik farm to sample traditional cheeses and hear about the region’s agricultural traditions. The day can be shortened or extended to fit the group.

    • We ascend to Ratitovec, a prominent ridge peak in the Škofja Loka Hills with sweeping views across the Julian Alps. After the descent, we explore Železniki, a town with over 500 years of ironworking history: the local museum traces the craft from early furnaces to its 19th-century peak, and the original Plauž, a traditional water-powered forging hammer, is preserved as a landmark in town.

    • We drive over Soriška Pass and hike a ridge walk that strings together four peaks high above the slopes of Soriška Planina, with uncrowded trails and wide-open views that feel a world away from the tourist circuit. In the afternoon, we transfer to Lake Bled and check in at Garni Hotel Berc. There’s time to walk the lakeside path, take in the island church, and ease into one of Slovenia’s most iconic views at a properly relaxed pace.

    • From Bled, a short drive brings us to the Pokljuka plateau, one of the finest starting points for hiking in the Julian Alps. We choose the route that best suits the group: gentler forest and meadow trails or more demanding climbs with panoramic views deep into Triglav National Park. Every option puts us well inside the heart of the Julian Alps.

    • We head into the Bohinj Valley, where the route adapts to the group. An easier day follows the Mostnica Gorge, a dramatic ravine carved by glacial meltwater with emerald pools and a natural stone arch. A more ambitious day climbs to the Double Lake in the Seven Lakes Valley, one of Triglav National Park’s most spectacular corners. The day ends with a cultural experience in the valley.

    • We drive north to hike Golica, a peak in the Karawanks range that sits on the Slovenian-Austrian border and rewards the climb with sweeping views in every direction. It’s a fitting close to the week: a different kind of mountain, a different kind of landscape, and a summit that makes the whole itinerary feel well-earned.
