After arriving in Matsuida, you’ll head to the guide’s base for orientation and bike fitting, making sure everything’s dialed in before you set off on your own. From there, a short warm-up ride takes you to a handful of nearby historic sites: Myogi Shrine, tucked at the foot of Mt. Myogi and dedicated to eternal family fortune since the sixth century; the giant rock-worshipping Nakanotake Shrine; Goryo-no Chaya, a restored teahouse once used by feudal lords traveling the Nakasendo; and Usui Sekisho, a former checkpoint along the old road. In the evening, there’s a welcome dinner at the base or a local restaurant.
