Cancellation policy

The percentages in the table above are of the full trip price, not of what you’ve paid at the time of booking.

Cancellations made within 48 hours of booking receive a full refund on all plans, including booking fees and insurance. After the 48-hour window, your refund depends on your selected protection plan and when you cancel. Core and Premium plans extend your cancellation rights beyond the Standard policy:

  • With Core, a covered reason gets you 75% of your trip cost back — even the day before you go.
  • With Premium, a covered reason gets you 100% of your trip cost back — and any other reason gets you 75%, right up to the day you leave.
What counts as a covered reason
  • Sudden illness or injury — yours, a travel companion’s, or an immediate family member’s, confirmed by a doctor
  • Death of a traveler or an immediate family member
  • A natural disaster affecting your destination or your departure point
  • A government travel advisory against travel to your destination

Changing your mind isn’t a covered reason. Premium is the only plan that covers that. Documentation is required for all insurance claims.

Everything the travel insurance covers

Both plans include travel insurance through Redpoint Travel Protection. Core insures 75% of your trip cost; Premium insures 100%.

Maximum per person:

  • Trip cancellation — up to 100% of your trip cost
  • Cancel for any reason — up to 75% of your trip cost (Premium only)
  • Trip interruption — 150% of the trip cost limit
  • Trip delay — $200 a day, $1,000 max
  • Itinerary change — $250
  • Single occupancy supplement — up to 100% of trip cost
  • Missed connection — $1,000
  • Travel inconvenience — $250 each, $750 max
  • Pet return — $1,000 per pet
  • Baggage and personal effects — $2,500, max $300 an item
  • Baggage delay — $600, after 12 hours
  • Baggage delivery — $100 per trip
  • Emergency medical expenses — $100,000
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation — up to $1,000,000

These are maximums. What a claim actually pays depends on what you can document and on the policy’s exclusions — pre-existing conditions and undeclared activities among them. We’ll send the full policy wording with your confirmation.

  • One summit in Ecuador’s Avenue of Volcanoes is not enough for you? Just add another one to your itinerary! You will join your guide for the profound experience of reaching the crater of the Cotopaxi Volcano, but it will be preceded by climbing a more approachable 16,818-ft peak of Iliniza Norte. This adventure is also a bit longer, giving you some more time to explore this extraordinary country.

    • Meet your guide at a predetermined time and location in Ecuador’s capital and leave for the town of El Chaupi. From there, you’ll trek to the Nuevos Horizontes lodge, which is strategically located on the saddle between the two Ilinizas peaks (Sur and Norte). It’s a small rustic lodge set in dramatic scenery where you’ll find bunk beds with mattresses, table, kitchen, and a toilet with running water. Try to get some sleep as soon as you’ve finished with your dinner as your climb starts at 3 am.
      Meals: Dinner

Vies of Iliniza Sur and Iliniza Norte and the surrounding landscapes in Ecuador’s Avenue of Volcanoes.
    • Start your climbing at 3 am. You will have reached the summit of Iliniza Norte, the eight tallest in Ecuador, by 6-8 am. Take in the beautiful views of the surrounding Andean peaks and valleys. You will get back to the refuge in time for breakfast. Take some rest and use the rest of the day to recover from the climb. The next day you will get transferred to another refuge, this time close to the Cotopaxi Volcano.
      Meals: Breakfast and dinner
      Elevation gain: 1,683 feet (513 m)

Two trekkers on their way to reaching the summit of the Iliniza Norte peak in Ecuador’s Avenure of Volcanoes.
    • Start your day with a hearty breakfast in your lodge and spend time according to your interests before 2 pm, when you will get transferred to yet another lodge at an even higher altitude—Jose Rivas Refugio (15,958 ft / 4,864 m), situated right below the Cotopaxi glacier. Dinner will be served early, at 5 pm. Try and get some sleep immediately afterwards—your expedition to the top of the Cotopaxi Volcano starts at midnight.

Jose Rivas Refugio, situated below the Cotopaxi Glacier, lodging during the Cotopaxi alpine climbing adventure.
    • Start your guided Cotopaxi climb at midnight. This expedition will take you between 5 and 8 hours, depending on conditions and your skill level. Once you’ve reached the summit, take in the magical views of nearby peaks and the surrounding landscapes at dawn. The descent will take you additional 2 hours, and you will arrive back to refuge just in time for breakfast. After getting some rest, you will get transferred back to Quito. Alternatively, you can get transportation to Riobamba or Latacunga. Say goodbye to your guide and Ecuador or continue touring on your own.

        • Guide gratuities — optional
    • This adventure is for intermediate to experienced climbers. You will need a great level of fitness and backpacking experience to accomplish this climb.

This 8-day itinerary is designed to build acclimatization gradually, giving you the best possible foundation for high-altitude climbing in Ecuador. Over the course of the trip, we progress from acclimatization hikes to summit attempts, allowing your body time to adapt while developing confidence on varied terrain.

Cotopaxi is a non-technical but physically demanding climb, attempted after several days of acclimatization. Summit day can last up to 8 hours, with challenges coming primarily from altitude and endurance, not technical difficulty. You’ll travel across moderate glaciated terrain, navigate crevasse zones, cross snow bridges, and tackle a short semi-vertical section near the summit. The total elevation gain on summit day is 3,618 ft (1,103 m).

Iliniza Norte, climbed earlier in the itinerary, is also non-technical, but requires excellent fitness, careful footwork, and comfort with scrambling. It’s less strenuous than Cotopaxi, typically taking up to 4 hours, with an elevation gain of 1,683 ft (513 m).

Throughout the trip, your guide manages logistics, monitors technique and acclimatization, and provides hands-on support whenever needed—allowing you to focus on moving well, adapting to altitude, and enjoying the climb.

    • For this guided Cotopaxi climbing tour, prior mountaineering experience is not required, though it’s certainly helpful. To climb Cotopaxi safely, you should be comfortable using crampons and an ice axe, and have experience with strenuous hiking on steep, glaciated terrain at high altitude and in cold conditions. Strong fitness and the ability to move steadily for long periods are essential.

Your guide will handle all safety measures, provide clear instruction on technical skills, and offer hands-on support if you encounter any challenges. Iliniza Norte is less demanding than Cotopaxi, so if you meet the requirements above, you’ll be well prepared for both climbs.

    • This itinerary is built around progressive, well-paced acclimatization over the full 8 days. You begin with two nights in Quito (2,850 m / 9,350 ft), followed by a moderate hike to Rucu Pichincha (4,784 m / 15,695 ft) and a guided ascent of Iliniza Norte (5,126 m / 16,818 ft). A dedicated rest and acclimatization day at Tambo Paxi Lodge (3,700 m / 12,140 ft) further supports altitude adaptation before moving to the José Rivas Refuge (4,800 m / 15,750 ft) for the summit push. This gradual build-up maximizes safety, comfort, and summit chances.
