Cancellation policy

The percentages in the table above are of the full trip price, not of what you’ve paid at the time of booking.

Cancellations made within 48 hours of booking receive a full refund on all plans, including booking fees and insurance. After the 48-hour window, your refund depends on your selected protection plan and when you cancel. Core and Premium plans extend your cancellation rights beyond the Standard policy:

  • With Core, a covered reason gets you 75% of your trip cost back — even the day before you go.
  • With Premium, a covered reason gets you 100% of your trip cost back — and any other reason gets you 75%, right up to the day you leave.
What counts as a covered reason
  • Sudden illness or injury — yours, a travel companion’s, or an immediate family member’s, confirmed by a doctor
  • Death of a traveler or an immediate family member
  • A natural disaster affecting your destination or your departure point
  • A government travel advisory against travel to your destination

Changing your mind isn’t a covered reason. Premium is the only plan that covers that. Documentation is required for all insurance claims.

Everything the travel insurance covers

Both plans include travel insurance through Redpoint Travel Protection. Core insures 75% of your trip cost; Premium insures 100%.

Maximum per person:

  • Trip cancellation — up to 100% of your trip cost
  • Cancel for any reason — up to 75% of your trip cost (Premium only)
  • Trip interruption — 150% of the trip cost limit
  • Trip delay — $200 a day, $1,000 max
  • Itinerary change — $250
  • Single occupancy supplement — up to 100% of trip cost
  • Missed connection — $1,000
  • Travel inconvenience — $250 each, $750 max
  • Pet return — $1,000 per pet
  • Baggage and personal effects — $2,500, max $300 an item
  • Baggage delay — $600, after 12 hours
  • Baggage delivery — $100 per trip
  • Emergency medical expenses — $100,000
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation — up to $1,000,000

These are maximums. What a claim actually pays depends on what you can document and on the policy’s exclusions — pre-existing conditions and undeclared activities among them. We’ll send the full policy wording with your confirmation.

  • This Chimborazo climb is carefully organized to give you the best chance of success at extreme altitude. The itinerary includes ample acclimatization, hotel and mountain lodge stays, and a well-paced ascent schedule. All logistics are handled in advance, from transportation and accommodation to glacier equipment and permits. With a maximum 2:1 climber-to-guide ratio, you’ll receive close supervision, clear decision-making, and experienced support throughout the climb—allowing you to focus fully on moving well and adapting to the altitude.

    • Arrive in Quito, where a private transfer brings you from the airport to our hotel. The rest of the day is free to settle in, rest after travel, or take a short walk to begin adjusting to the altitude. Quito’s dramatic setting high in the Andes offers a gentle introduction to the journey ahead.

      Accommodation: Hotel in Quito

    • Today is at leisure, giving us time to explore Quito’s historic center, visit museums, enjoy local cuisine, or simply rest and prepare for the altitude to come. This day plays an important role in acclimatization before we move to higher elevations.

    • We leave Quito and travel south toward Chimborazo, the highest mountain in Ecuador. The scenic drive takes us deep into the Andean highlands before reaching our eco-lodge near the base of the volcano at approximately 4,000 meters (13,120 ft). The afternoon is spent resting, hydrating, and settling into the high-altitude environment.

    • Today we complete a moderate acclimatization hike toward the Whymper Needles, reaching approximately 5,200 meters (17,060 ft). This hike allows us to test our equipment, assess conditions, and continue adapting to the altitude while enjoying dramatic views of Chimborazo’s glaciers. We return to the lodge for a second night of rest and recovery.

    • This adventure is for intermediate to experienced climbers. You will need a great level of fitness and backpacking experience to accomplish this climb.

Chimborazo is a tough climb, which requires a specific skill set. Building effective storm camps, rescue techniques, climbing with full packs, fixed rope ascension, and formulating a climbing strategy are all necessary topics to cover. Participants should arrive with a healthy desire for enduring mountain conditions.

Training for Chimborazo is crucial, especially if you live at sea level. To prepare for the altitude, focus on building endurance through activities like long-distance running. This will help your body adapt to the physical demands of the climb, ensuring you’re ready to conquer Ecuador’s tallest peak.

One of the biggest strengths of this itinerary is how thoughtfully it’s built for acclimatization. You start in Quito at 2,850 m (9,350 ft), then gradually move higher—reaching Chimborazo Basecamp Lodge at 4,000 m (13,120 ft) on Day 3. On Day 4, you hike up to Whymper Needles at 5,200 m (17,060 ft), before ascending to High Camp at 5,300 m (17,390 ft). With your body properly adjusted, you’ll make your summit attempt on Day 6, aiming for the top of Chimborazo at 6,267 m (20,560 ft).

    • The Chimborazo climb takes place between midnight and dawn, with many successful summit attempts reaching either the secondary summit of Veintimilla (6,230 m / 20,440 ft) or the main summit, Cumbre Máxima, around sunrise.

The descent back to Whymper Refuge at 5,000 m (16,400 ft) typically takes 2 to 3 hours. Although Chimborazo is extremely high, the route is non-technical, meaning climbers can reach very high altitude without encountering steep vertical sections that require advanced technical skills such as ice climbing. In good weather, the summit rewards climbers with sweeping views of the Ecuadorian Andes, including Cotopaxi, El Altar, and the active volcanoes Tungurahua and Sangay.

    • This expedition is geared for intermediate to advanced climbers who are comfortable being at a high altitude, climbing and moving. Very good physical condition is also a must. Though this climb doesn’t require any technical skills, it’s still not suitable for first-time alpine climbers.

    • No—summits are never guaranteed on high-altitude mountains, and Chimborazo is no exception. Weather, snow conditions, and how your body responds to altitude all play a role. That said, our itinerary is designed to maximize your chances of success, with plenty of acclimatization time, a gradual ascent, and very small guide-to-client ratios. Proper acclimatization, pacing, and expert decision-making significantly improve summit odds—but reaching the top is always a bonus, not a promise.
