  • A 4-day guided backpacking trip into Yosemite's backcountry, built around one goal: the summit of Half Dome. We start at Mono Meadow trailhead, hike through some of the park's wildest terrain, and camp along rivers and creeks before tackling the cables on day three. The permit, all meals from the first evening through the last lunch, and a professional wilderness guide are all included. Expect 23 total miles, full days on the trail, and nights that make the effort more than worth it.

    • We meet at Mono Meadow trailhead for a gear check and introductions before heading into the backcountry. The trail winds through meadows of orange and purple wildflowers, beneath pine forest, and across a cool mountain stream. Somewhere in the distance, Half Dome makes its first appearance—and it’s already pulling you forward. We set up camp at Illilouette Creek, where the evening is yours to wade in, lounge on sunny rocks, or simply do nothing. Dinner is served beside the campfire, and the creek keeps you company through the night.

      Meals: Dinner
      Hiking: 3 mi (4.8 km)
      Elevation: +120 ft (+37 m) / -890 ft (-271 m)
Accommodation: Backcountry tent camp at Illilouette Creek

      Campsite in Yosemite
    • After breakfast and coffee at camp, we ford Illilouette Creek and hike across a wide western meadow—keep your eyes open for rattlesnakes basking in the sun or a bear moving through the brush. Half Dome gets closer with every mile. We stop for lunch at the top of Nevada Fall, one of Yosemite’s most dramatic waterfalls, where the brave can walk right to the brink and peer over the edge. We make camp along the Merced River in the afternoon, with Half Dome looming directly above the tents. Sleep comes slowly tonight.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
      Hiking: 5 mi (8 km)
      Elevation: +700 ft (+213 m) / -1,150 ft (-350 m)
Accommodation: Backcountry tent camp along the Merced River

    • We leave camp behind and head up with light packs. The trail climbs steeply through the forest before breaking out above the treeline, where the views stretch for miles in every direction. At the base of the subdome, we follow a stone staircase carved into the cliffside—and then the cables begin. Your guide will walk you through how to ascend safely, and we do it together, one step at a time. At the top of Half Dome, 8,800 ft above sea level, the views are hard to describe. Back at camp, we celebrate with a swim in the river.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
      Hiking: 7 mi (11.3 km)
      Elevation: +2,700 ft (+823 m) / -2,700 ft (-823 m)
Accommodation: Backcountry tent camp along the Merced River

    • The last morning, we look up at Half Dome one more time over breakfast—and it looks different now that you’ve been to the top. The trail back to the trailhead offers a couple of solid climbs, each with viewpoints to turn around and take it all in. We stop for lunch on the shady bank at Illilouette Creek before pushing through to Mono Meadow. Back at the trailhead, you say goodbye to your new friends and head home a card-carrying member of the Half Dome Hikers Club.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch
      Hiking: 8 mi (12.9 km)
      Elevation: +2,040 ft (+622 m) / -820 ft (-250 m)

    • To join this Half Dome backpacking tour, great fitness is required. You’ll be hiking up to 7–8 miles (11–13 km) per day while carrying a 30–40 lb pack, with up to 2,700 ft (820 m) of elevation gain on summit day. If you can jog four miles comfortably, you’re likely in the right shape.

Training is strongly recommended before the trip. A good starting point is 6-mile hikes with 2,000+ ft of elevation gain while wearing a weighted pack. Stair machines and treadmill hiking at a high incline are also effective. The better prepared you are, the more you’ll enjoy it.
