We meet in Aosta in the morning—a 30-minute bus to Châtillon, then an hour’s ride up to the starting village of Valtournenche, nestled beneath the Matterhorn. From here, the trail climbs steadily through lush summer pastures and quiet woodland, opening up quickly to striking views of the surrounding peaks. The stage finishes at the scenic shores of Lago di Cignana, where Rifugio Barmasse sits at 2,150 m. A short and manageable first day—exactly right for settling in before the bigger stages ahead.
