  • Let's go on an epic adventure through a world of mythic proportions—the iconic Laugavegur Trail. The ever-changing landscapes of this 6-day hiking tour reveal more natural gems than you could imagine. We’re local Icelandic guides and, having guided tons of groups through Laugavegur, we know every nook and cranny of it. We’ll deal with all the logistical stuff, all you have to do is hike! Remember, this trail is no walk in the park so make sure you’re ready to take on the challenge of steep drop-offs, fording rivers, and uneven terrain. The rewards are immense—we’ll see and walk on landscapes you can’t find anywhere else in the world.

    • Early in the morning, we travel by regular mountain bus into the heart of the highlands, bound for Landmannalaugar. Arriving around midday, we have time to soak in the warm natural river bath, a perfect introduction to this remarkable landscape. In the afternoon, we begin our trek by climbing the lava edge of Laugahraun, formed during an eruption in the late 15th century. The trail winds through vividly colored rhyolite hills, past steaming hot springs and dramatic mountain scenery. As we gain elevation, we cross lingering snowfields that often remain well into summer, reaching the high point of the route near Hrafntinnusker. We arrive at Hrafntinnusker Mountain Hut in the evening, where we settle in for the night surrounded by Iceland’s raw highland wilderness.

    • The trail leads us through another series of steaming and bubbling hot springs before climbing onto a ridge that guides us southward. Following this ridgeline, we reach a spectacular viewpoint with sweeping panoramas: the vast Mýrdalsjökull glacier, the infamous Eyjafjallajökull volcano, and the softer, greener mountains closer at hand. Nestled between two mountain ridges below, we spot Álftavatn—Swan Lake—shimmering in the landscape. On its northern shore, our hut awaits, marking the end of a visually stunning day of hiking.

    • We leave Álftavatn behind and hike across the rolling hills of Brattháls, where we cross our first river of the day. Continuing through open terrain, we reach the green valley of Hvanngil and cross the Kaldaklofskvísl river by footbridge. Less than a kilometer later, we ford the Bláfjallakvísl, before warming our feet on the approach to the Innri Emstruá, crossed by bridge beside a striking waterfall. The route then crosses black sand plains beneath the green slopes of Hattfell, leading to the deep Markarfljót canyon before arriving at the small oasis of Botnar, where our hut awaits.

      Elevation: +150 m (+490 ft), -250 m (-820 ft)

      Markarfljot canyon and river

    • We begin the day by descending into the canyon of Fremri-Emstruá, crossing the river by a bridge deep below. The trail follows the river briefly before climbing two prominent hills that reward us with magnificent views of Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. Descending the second hill, we ford the Þröngá river before entering the birch forests of Þórsmörk. The scenery shifts dramatically to lush greenery, tuff cliffs, and fantastical ridges reminiscent of a mythical landscape. We arrive in the valley of Langidalur, where we spend the night surrounded by vibrant vegetation.

      Elevation: +200 m (+660 ft), -400 m (-1,310 ft)

    • Today we climb from Þórsmörk toward the Magni and Móði craters, formed during the 2010 eruption. The trail offers outstanding views of outlet glaciers from Mýrdalsjökull and the surrounding peaks, with especially scenic sections along the Kattarhryggir ridge and the steep Brattafönn climb. It is a long and demanding day, with significant ascent and descent, and truly one of the most dramatic stages of the trek. In challenging weather or poor visibility, we instead explore one of the many beautiful circular trails within Þórsmörk, which offer equally rewarding scenery at a gentler pace.

      Youngest craters in Iceland

    • In the morning, we have time to climb a small nearby peak for sweeping views over the magical valley hidden behind the glaciers. After enjoying lunch at the hut, we prepare for departure and board a 4×4 bus that carries us across numerous rivers and creeks on the journey back to the lowlands. The drive itself is an adventure, offering a final look at Iceland’s wild interior before we reach the main road and continue on to Reykjavík, arriving in the late afternoon.

    • In order to join this Laugavegur Trail tour, great fitness is required. To make the most out of your hiking adventure, you have to be able to hike between 5 to 8 hours for 6 full days.

      You’ll gain between 100 (330 ft) and 600 m (1,970 ft) of elevation per day. The daily walking distance varies, typically ranging from around 6-7 miles (10-12 km) to roughly 10-11 miles (16-17 km). Read day-by-day breakdowns in the itinerary.

      You won’t have to carry all your gear and belongings with you—your luggage will be transported hut-to-hut.

      The trails are not paved, but in some places, paths have formed. Some trails are rocky, but are easily accessible to anyone used to hiking in uneven terrain. Participants will need to hike up and down steep slopes that sometimes have loose grounds and require good balance. Hikes will also involve river crossings. There are extremely steep drop offs along the hiking trail and scrambling with the use of a chain is required both up and down. It is not for those with a fear of heights. So please keep in mind that, overall, the Laugavegur Trail is a challenging trek.

    • Boots & clothing

        • Trousers – strong, lightweight material that dries quickly (e.g. softshell)

        • Rain trousers – windproof, waterproof and breathable (please note that full rain gear is mandatory on all our tours)
        • Gloves – wool or synthetic
        • Socks – wool or synthetic (two to three pairs)
        • Warm hat – wool or synthetic

        • A duffel bag for the transport of your overnight gear (please avoid bringing a suitcase)
        • Backpack for extra clothes and food during the day (a 35–45 L pack should be sufficient (2100–2750 cu in))
        • River shoes – walking sandals or old running shoes with good grip along with warm socks or neoprene socks Open sandals or flip-flops are not suitable

      Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. Iceland is home to infamously volatile weather, so it’s best to be prepared with the right gear. It is recommended to dress in layers. 3 or 4 upper layers are highly recommended such as a light T-shirt (preferably wool) next to the skin, then a fleece or heavy wool garment, topped off with a waterproof windbreaker.

      There is a limit of 1 piece of luggage per participant (+your daypack). Since there is limited space on the luggage trailer, try to pack light out of consideration for other passengers and use a waterproof duffel bag which is easier to store. If you have extra luggage that you would like to leave, we recommend storing luggage at the BSI Bus terminal (fees apply) or another luggage storage space in Reykjavik.

      As for your phone, please note that cell service/internet coverage is available most of the time along the trail, however, take into consideration that some parts of the trail are not covered.

    • Group sizes and pricing

        • For this Laugavegur Trail tour, the usual client-to-guide ratio is 14:1.
        • It takes a minimum of 5 people for this tour to operate. The maximum group size is set at 14 participants.

      Min. age requirements

        • If you are older than 18, you’re good to go.
        • Minors younger than 18 may be permitted to join the Laugavegur Trail tour on a case-by-case basis, but must be in the presence of a parent or legal guardian.

      If your group has hikers under the age of 18, contact us prior to booking to make arrangements.

    • To get to your Laugavegur Trail tour, most people fly into Keflavík International Airport (KEF), located 45 minutes from the city center. From there, the best and the cheapest way is to take a shuttle to reach the center. Buses leave every 35-40 minutes after the arrival of each flight, 24/7.

      You’ll meet your guide at the BSÍ bus terminal in Reykjavík early in the morning on Day 1.
