Deposits

When booking a trip, you can either pay for it in full or reserve your spot with a 30% deposit. The remaining 70% of the trip price is to be paid 90 days prior to departure, at the latest.

Cancellations

After 48 hours, booking fees are non-refundable in all cases. You can choose one of 57hours’ flexibility options:

  • Let's go on an epic adventure through a world of mythic proportions—the iconic Laugavegur Trail. The ever-changing landscapes of this 6-day hiking tour reveal more natural gems than you could imagine. We’re local Icelandic guides and, having guided tons of groups through Laugavegur, we know every nook and cranny of it. We’ll deal with all the logistical stuff, all you have to do is hike! Remember, this trail is no walk in the park so make sure you’re ready to take on the challenge of steep drop-offs, fording rivers, and uneven terrain. The rewards are immense—we’ll see and walk on landscapes you can’t find anywhere else in the world.

    • We’ll meet in Reykjavík in the early morning at BSI Bus Terminal. We’ll depart on a regular mountain bus to Landmannalaugar in the heart of the Highlands, and we’ll be there by noon. Before we start the trek, there’s time to dip into the warm natural river bath. In the afternoon, we’ll start the trek by climbing the lava edge of Laugahraun, lava from the end of the 15th century. The path threads over colorful hills between smoking hot springs and colorful mountains. Then we’ll hike over snow that resists melting until late in the summer on the highest part of the trail at Hrafntinnusker. We’ll reach the Hrafntinnusker Mountain Hut and stay there for the night.

    • Today we’ll go through a series of fuming and boiling hot springs until we arrive at a ridge that leads to the south. We follow the ridge to a magnificent view point, from which we’ll be able to see the mighty Mýrdalsjökull glacier, the infamous Eyjafjallajökull (yes, the volcano that stopped all air traffic in 2010), as well as some smaller verdant mountains near us. In between two mountain ridges, we will spot a lake called Álftavatn and on its north side, our hut for the night is waiting.

      Alftavatn, Swan Lake in Iceland

    • We’ll leave Álftavatn (literally meaning Swan Lake) in the morning and hike across the hills of Brattháls. After crossing the river Kaldaklofskvísl by a footbridge, we’ll arrive at a second river, Bláfjallakvísl and this one we’ll need to ford. We warm our feet by walking to the river Innri Emstruá, which we cross via a bridge before admiring an impressive waterfall in the river. The green Hattfell mountain towers over the black sand and gravel plain that we then need to cross to get to the Markarfljót canyon, a canyon up to about 180 m deep (590 ft). We arrive at a little oasis at Botnar where our hut awaits us.

      Markarfljot canyon and river

    • This day starts with a walk down to the canyon of Fremri-Emstruá, which is crossed by a bridge. The path then follows the river for a while, crossing two impressive hills where the view over to Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers is just magnificent. The descent of the second big hill brings us to the river Þröngá, which we have to ford before entering the birch woods of Thórsmörk. The landscapes of this valley are otherworldly and you’ll get to witness it all by yourself. FInally we’ll reach the green valley of Langidalur and stay there for the night.

      Elevation: +200 m / +660 ft | -400 m / -1,310 ft
      Distance: 16 km / 9.9 miles

      Lush Thorsmork valley

    • Today we’ll climb from Thórsmörk to the youngest volcanic craters from 2010, the Magni and Móði craters. The trail offers fantastic views of the outlet glaciers from Mýrdalsjökull and the surrounding mountains. Parts of the trail are also very scenic themselves, like the Kattarhryggir ridge and the Brattafönn climb. Return to Thórsmörk in the afternoon.

      Elevation: +800 m / +2,620 ft | -900 m / -2,950 ft

      Youngest craters in Iceland

    • In the morning, we’ll climb a small mountain to get fantastic views over this magical valley “behind” the glaciers. We’ll have our final lunch at the hut and then prepare for departure with a 4×4 bus that will take us across around 20 rivers and creeks to get to the main road! Expect to arrive in Reykjavik in the late afternoon. If you’d like to stay longer and explore the area, just ask us for some recommendations!

    • This Laugavegur Trail tour is considered moderately strenuous to challenging. To make the most out of your hiking adventure, you have to be able to hike between 5 to 8 hours while carrying a backpack for 6 full days. You’ll gain between 100 (330 ft) and 600 m (1,970 ft) of elevation per day, read day-by-day breakdown in the itinerary. The daily walking distance varies, typically ranging from around 6-7 miles (10-12 km) to roughly 10-11 miles (16-17 km).

      You won’t have to carry all your gear and belongings with you—your luggage will be transported hut-to-hut.

      The trails are not paved, but in some places, paths have formed. Some trails are rocky, but are easily accessible to anyone used to hiking in uneven terrain. Participants will need to hike up and down steep slopes that sometimes have loose grounds and require good balance. Hikes will also involve river crossings. There are extremely steep drop offs along the hiking trail and scrambling with the use of a chain is required both up and down. It is not for those with a fear of heights. So please keep in mind that, overall, the Laugavegur Trail is a challenging trek.

    • Here’s a list of the equipment you need to bring:

      Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. Iceland is home to infamously volatile weather, so it’s best to be prepared with the right gear. It is recommended to dress in layers. 3 or 4 upper layers are highly recommended such as a light T-shirt (preferably wool) next to the skin, then a fleece or heavy wool garment, topped off with a waterproof windbreaker.

      There is a limit of 1 piece of luggage per participant (+your daypack). Since there is limited space on the luggage trailer, try to pack light out of consideration for other passengers and use a waterproof duffel bag which is easier to store. If you have extra luggage that you would like to leave, we recommend storing luggage at the BSI Bus terminal (fees apply) or another luggage storage space in Reykjavik.

      As for your phone, please note that cell service/internet coverage is available most of the time along the trail, however, take into consideration that some parts of the trail are not covered.

    • For your Laugavegur Trail tour, your guide’s goal is to have the food as fresh and nutritious as possible.

        • For breakfast they’ll make porridge, the Nordic breakfast classic, which will keep you full and give you lots of energy. You’ll also have muesli, bread, butter, cheese, and jam available. And, of course, tea and coffee.
        • You’ll make your own lunch pack with bread, spreads, hams, and cheeses. Don’t forget biscuits! You’ll also have nuts and chocolate snacks, but please bring your own favorite energy bars or snacks.
        • Dinner in the evening is prepared by the guide (help with chopping and preparing is much appreciated). Each meal will have three courses, starter, main, and dessert. Your guides will try to have the menu diverse and keep it balanced. For example, you might have a soup to start with, then some fried fish and rice, and a piece of cake for dessert.

      Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free diets can be accommodated. Please let us know upon booking of your restrictions so your guides can prepare accordingly.

      Tap water is always safe as well as water from almost all lakes and rivers. Help the environment, bring a water bottle, and never buy bottled water while in Iceland.

    • Group sizes and pricing

        • For this Laugavegur Trail tour, the usual client-to-guide ratio is 14:1.
        • It takes a minimum of 5 people for this tour to operate. The maximum group size is set at 14 participants.

      Min. age requirements

        • If you are older than 18, you’re good to go.
        • Minors younger than 18 may be permitted to join the Laugavegur Trail tour on a case-by-case basis, but must be in the presence of a parent or legal guardian.

      If your group has hikers under the age of 18, contact us prior to booking to make arrangements.

    • To get to your Laugavegur Trail tour, most people fly into Keflavík International Airport (KEF), located 45 minutes from the city center. From there, the best and the cheapest way is to take a shuttle to reach the center. Buses leave every 35-40 minutes after the arrival of each flight, 24/7.

      You’ll meet your guide at the BSÍ bus terminal in Reykjavík early in the morning on Day 1.

    • We highly recommend that you cover all your bases with both emergency medical and travel insurance.

      With medical insurance, if you have an accident or medical emergency on or off the mountain, you’ll avoid paying out of pocket for costly expenses. This covers everything from hospital treatments to emergency air transportation and more. Travel insurance covers canceled flights, natural disasters and other scenarios that may interrupt your travel plans.

      We also expect you to respect local regulations and take measures to protect yourselves, your guides, and the communities you’re traveling to. If you need assistance selecting the right insurance for your group, let us know and we will be happy to help!

    • Iceland, the “Land of Fire and Ice”, has forever lived with volcanic activity. Minor and major eruptions have occurred every few years since the island was formed. Some of Iceland’s appeal, aside from sheer natural beauty, surely stems from this very fact.

      However, every new eruption, such as the recent Reykjanes Peninsula fissure, will make some travelers, tourists, and adventurers uneasy, especially given the fact that sensationalist media is not immune to misinformation and speculation.

      Since we work with a number of expert local guides in Iceland, we thought we’d share their input and fill you in on what’s actually going on.

      First of all, air traffic has not been affected. Flights to and from Keflavík International Airport and Reykjavík Domestic Airport are operating as they always do.

      Second, the effects of volcanic activity have been localized, with some roads closed, and all services in Iceland operating as usual. Reykjavik, the capital, is around 40 km (25 miles) away from the volcanic fissure, and life there is as normal as ever.

      And third, trips offered by 57hours are taking place much further away, and are thereby even less likely to be affected by the volcanic activity, being perfectly safe for adventurers. Naturally, the authorities (and guides) are monitoring the situation and doing everything possible to keep both local residents and visitors safe and well informed.
