I absolutely loved everything about this hike- from the guide to the people I shared the adventure with- to the views- to the history- it was all amazing! The huts were as intended- a warm, dry place to spend each night- crowded for sure, but to be expected. The dinners that we prepared each night together were wonderful. The only recommendation I would make is to have more variety in the breakfast and lunch offerings- as I could barely look at another bowl of oatmeal or sandwich by the last day. Other than that, everything was wonderful!

5-Day Classic Laugavegur Tour

Hike the legendary Laugavegur Trail and witness otherworldly sights along the way! Not every trip ends in a mythical place, but this one does. Following an ancient pathway across petrified lava, azure lakes and through ashen fields, you’ll explore all the crowd faves—like Álftavatn lake and the valley created by Thor himself. After long days filled with adventure and Iceland’s untamed nature, you’ll warm up and recharge your batteries in authentic mountain huts. It was a beautiful, fun experience with a great guide, group, food and laughs. The food was good. The huts were fun, especially the Basar hut. The 3rd hut was a little too crowded. It would have been better to just leave it to our group instead of crowding 4 more independent hikers in. But we made it work.

The spectacular scenery, the wonderfully challenging hiking, the luck of having VERY compatible trip comrades (close proximity in sleeping and eating in all the same room in some huts): the trip was a 10 out of 10 spectacular. However: breakfasts were bleak without nuts, dried fruits, nearly enough honey or jam for doctoring the porridge. We even ran out of peanut butter which helped the taste of the porridge. Energy bars were notably absent the entire time—they would have been nice for trail hiking. There were no individual yogurts at breakfast. We DID appreciate all the coffee!!

It was such a beautiful hike! What made it even better was the group we had. We did the mixed and it felt like we all just clicked. We had such an interesting group that worked so well together. It’s definitely no frills in regards to accommodations and I would recommend bringing a bit of salt to add to your food (they don’t use salt in any of the cooking) but overall it was an incredible experience :-)

Our adventure was stellar. The country was beautiful and different every day. The pace was perfect for our group and we were able to manage the trek with ease. The accommodation were very crowded for the first 3 nights and I think it would bode well to inform the patrons of the exact nature of the size and 'closeness' of the huts. The last 2 nights, the accommodation was much better with room to breathe and not such close quarters. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone with the ability to walk the distances.

Superb! This trek far exceeded my expectations. It was like a well-oiled machine. We had tremendous weather all week, and even the rain we did have did not hamper visibility. The trail was well maintained and it was great to see that it is adhered to. The huts were great, a few a bit tight - first night was not a big deal, even the smell. Absolutely phenominal experience on the 5-day Laugavegur trek! The scenery is unworldly as you pass through and over lava fields, through rivers and lush green birch forests, walk past glaciers and witness nature as most never do. It was a hike of a lifetime. The huts made each night so restful and comfortable. The food provided was great. So nice to just eat breakfast, pack our lunch and snacks in a day pack, and head out to the next hut. When we arrived at the hut, our luggage was waiting for us.

This was the trek and adventure of a lifetime. My wife and I have trekked Nepal, Thailand, the trail to Machu Pichu, and other sites. But this one stands up to all of those. The change in landscapes and terrain, combined with the sheer thrill of the trek made this five days we will always consider some of the best five days of our lives.

Beautiful hike. Other groups found it very difficult. Perhaps be more clear on how fit you need to be . The laugevegur trail is not for people afraid of heights or who do not have previous hiking experience on a multi- day hike. I WAS PREPARED AND LOVED EVERY MOMENT.

We began to joke that Icelandic times and distances were 'different' than the rest of the world. It seemed our GPS trackers ended up with far more kilometres that the 'official' brochures; and the 'we will take a break in 20 minutes' was always more like 40 minutes. This trek is physically demanding. It is CRITICAL that you read the instructions on what to bring. We had two people who did not, and had to fall out after 2 days due to inadequate clothing, conditioning, and equipment. This is not an easy jaunt, but it is a demanding, both physical and mental, hike and trek. The cabins were comfortable and the food Soyli cooked for us was very good. We were lucky that the weather was excellent other than the first day's rain. I am 78, so it will take a few days for the aches and pains to subside. However, I would repeat this trip in a heartbeat.

Trekking The Laugavegur Trail was one of the best multi-day hikes I have done (comparing to Kili and Machu Picchu). The landscapes, terrain, colours, views, weather were all new levels of 'never before experienced' stuff. Truly thrilling and exhilarating. Definitely highly recommend for the journey across Iceland with a completely different take on Mother Nature. However the accommodation is very primitive. Huts 1 and 3 have the dining facility in the dormitory style bedroom (basic bunk beds which are difficult / dangerous to get in and out off - top bunk). The single dormitory rooms are jam packed with up to 20 people. Hut 1 has no flushing loo or shower facilities. Whilst Hikers don't expect Ritz-Carlton hospitality experience, it is clear that out of the three entities providing the overall adventure here (57hours, Icelandic Mountain Guides and the Hut Management Company), the Hut Management Company needs to invest a little bit more money in upgrading / extending the accommodation. The food for 5 days was good but kept in Cool Boxes only. The 5* rating is deservedly given more in line with the physical trek outdoor trek experience, rather than the practical hut experience.

5-days Laugavegur trek, an experience of a lifetime!

How do I start this…I celebrated my birthday with a trip to Iceland. We did the 5-days Laugavegur trek first and then another 5 days sightseeing in Reykjavík. For me the trekking experience was amazing. The weather was so nice during the trekking, mostly sunny with a few cloudy moment here and there. Our tour guide Greta was caring, fun, knowledgable, very helpful and a good story teller. I love listening to her stories, especially the ghost one! The scenery on the 5-days trek was breathtaking, so raw, pure, and untouched in some places. The only suggestion I would have is the hut accommodation, I hope they would put less people in a tiny room (I still couldn’t believe that 20 adults were actually sharing a tiny hut). Other than that, hands down the best Laugavegur trek in Iceland!!!

5 day Laugavegur hiking trail in huts

What an awesome experience. If you are unsure just do it. This company were great even before we set off on our adventure. They stepped in and helped out with kit when our luggage was delayed. The professionalism of the whole team and the planning was superb. Our driver transported our bags from hut to hut and helped out with the cooking. His lamb stew will live long in the memory after trekking in a storm that day. Sölvi our guide was brilliant and our group of fellow trekkers (we were 7) and lovely Silja from the company quickly became friends. The scenery was epic and ever changing and Sölvi our native Icelandic guide was a source of geological knowledge and wonderful Icelandic folk tales to scare us with. The food was incredible given the circumstances. The river crossings were even fun! Make sure you have the right kit. The weather was stormy on one of our days but we were in safe hands and had a cosy lunch inside our guide’s storm shelter to warm us up.

Wish we had gone a little earlier in the season as some days were cloudy. I think the company ought to send 2 guides. The accommodations should have ensured the full space was just our group of 14. Transportation should also have been just for the group for sake of timeliness.

This is not a reflection on our guide, who was amazing. It has more to do with the less than ideal weather conditions which I know cannot be helped, but perhaps a better stressing of the need to bring more layers of clothing than what is listed. Even in late August, we were quite cold and very wet, which made for a less than comfortable experience.

The trail was excellent with some of the most unique scenery I’ve ever seen. I love Iceland. The food provided by the Mountain Guide team was good and sufficient, but breakfast and lunch didn’t offer enough variety over the 5 days. My major complaint is related to the huts. The first nights hut had foul commodes with the most horrendous odor. And sleeping on a three inch thick pad on the floor was not a pleasant experience. I expected better accommodations so was disappointed in the huts.

The Icelandic landscape is beyond breathtaking, and I can't say enough about the hiking experience. I was a little disappointed in the huts (lack of hot water in huts 3 and 4) and the food was somewhat insufficient. Had I known this, I would have brought along more food to pack for hiking (protein bars, nuts, items high in calories and fat). There was an outbreak of norovirus that might have been stemmed if there was better sanitation in the kitchens and the huts themselves.

I loved Iceland but with 16 clients, the team needed a 2nd guide. I guide women on 14ers in Colorado and I’d never guide that many people alone. It affected the team and I helped Gunnar with the slow people who needed help. I didn’t mind, but for a better experience, another guide was required.

Beautiful country and great experience. The only reason this isn't 5 star is because we had some issues in the beginning (delayed luggage) - and as a vegetarian, the food wasn't the best. I also feel like I needed to eat more along the way - spent a lot of the time very hungry.

|September 2023
The views were amazing. Loved the track itself. Few things about the trip that dampened the experience esp given the high price. I would expect pick up/drop off to your hotel in Reykjavik should be included and storage of bags should be organised by the tour operator. These were two things that were stressful and expensive at the either end of the trip esp because the weather was so bad. There was also some confusion from the guides about the food included in the tour so there were a few hungry people on the track the first day. This was later cleared up and there were no further issues. The food was great.

The cramped sleeping accommodations and extremely smelly toilets at the first hut was very challenging i.e Hrafntinnusker Hut- 16 of us sleeping in rows in attic of Hut. To preserve the the beauty of the place, adding a couple of toilets between each hut would help to preserve the landscape.
J

Visually spectacular, route was well defined, and it gave us everything as advertised. One complaint would be the 1st hut pit toilet. Completely unbearable and in definite need of upgrade or at least smell mitigation. Seriously.

|August 2023
Two problems that could be rectified. My itinerary had the wrong hit for day2 and therefore the two distances on either side of it. Also, Don’t cheap out at the huts. If the group is 15 and the bunk room holds 20 just pay for the extra beds. Day3 was ridiculous. Two people in a group of 16 booked in the hut then used it for all their groups cooking. It was an unfortunate circumstance for them though as they lost their guide. I have some empathy but it was chaotic.

Beautiful trail and area! Great country and people! We also had a wonderful group of 15 good-natured hikers. The huts were adequate but sanitation was not good except for the last hut. There were not nearly enough toilets and showers (in all but the last hut) to accommodate all of the hut dwellers and the large number of campers outside of the huts. There was only 4-6 toilets, 3-4 sinks and 2-4 showers showers to accommodate approximately 150-300+ hikers. There was little evidence that these were cleaned. The kitchens in the huts were ok because we cleaned them and helped our guide prep the food.

Gorgeous country, gorgeous hike and an incredible guide in Emma. The group of women on our hike were phenomenal to a t. Would whole heartedly recommend Icelandic Mountain Guides (and Emma in particular) to anyone considering a guided hike

Overall it was a great trip with amazing scenery, gourmet meals and a prepared, knowledgeable guide. The low points were the bus bathroom stop with the content of 5 buses lined up for two toilets, and the crowded mountain huts with 30 people packed into a small attic with no fire escapes.

Things to know

  • Included:

      • An experienced, local, English-speaking guide with extensive knowledge of the area
      • 5 or 6 days of guided hiking along the Laugavegur Trail depending on your chosen itinerary
      • Mountain hut accommodation in shared dormitories during the hike
      • All meals during the hike (from lunch on Day 1 through lunch on the last day)
      • Transport at the beginning and end of trek
      • Luggage transfers (ideally duffel bag, max. 60L / up to 18 kg (40 lb) per person)
      • Lodging taxes

Add-ons (available to add upon checkout, must be added before the tour):

      • Sleeping bag
      • Hiking poles
      • Special dietary supplements (vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian)

    Not included:

      • Flights to Iceland
      • Airport transfers
      • Showers in huts (payable on-site, approximately 1,000 ISK per shower)
      • Accommodation before and after the tour
      • Meals before and after the hike (breakfast on day 1, dinner on the last day)
      • Insurance — recommended, available to add at checkout
      • Guide gratuities — optional
  • For the Laugavegur Trail, you need to be able to hike for 5 or 6 consecutive days while carrying a daypack. Each day you will hike between 4 and 7 hours. On top of that, volcanic terrain can be challenging and the weather unforgiving. That said, if you are looking for adventure and up to the task of multiple days of full-day trekking, you’ll be rewarded immensely!

      • For the 5-day tour, the most you’ll hike within a day is 19 km (12 mi), up to 7 hours, with up to 470 m (1,540 ft) of elevation gain.
      • For the 6-day tour, the most you’ll hike within a day is on Day 5—20 km (12.5 mi), 7 hours, with 1,000 m (3,280 ft) of elevation gain/loss.
      • For day-by-day distances and elevation changes, check out the itinerary!

In terms of backpack weight, you will only need to carry a smaller day backpack with your lunch, water bottle, medication, sunglasses, river crossing shoes, rain gear, and other items or clothing you might need for the day. A great thing about this trip is that luggage transfers are included, making your hiking experience far more comfortable.

Not sure which itinerary to choose, the 5-day or the 6-day adventure? The difference is the addition of the Fimmvörðuháls hike in the 6-day tour. On Day 5, you’ll gain 1,000 m (3,280 ft) of elevation, and experience very challenging terrain over 20 km (12.5 miles). This day has some extremely steep drop-offs along the trail and some scrambling with the use of a chain both up and down. The 6-day adventure is, therefore, not suited for those with a fear of heights and those not ready for steep drop-offs.

Other than Day 5 on the 6-day tour, both itineraries are the same in terms of the route, distance, and elevation gain.

  • Here’s a list of the equipment you need to bring:

      • A duffel bag for the transport of your overnight gear between mountain huts
      • Day backpack for extra clothes and lunch pack during the day (around a 25-40L bag)
      • Your own sleeping bag – a basic sleeping bag with no specific temperature rating is sufficient for this entire trek since all the mountain huts are heated (available to rent)
      • Small thermal mat to sit on — optional
      • Hiking poles — optional (available to rent)
      • Gaiters — optional but recommended for departures in June and early July
      • Gloves – wool or synthetic 2 pairs of different thickness
      • Long sleeve shirt (thermal underwear) – wool or synthetic
      • T-shirt (thermal underwear) – wool or synthetic
      • Light wool or fleece sweater (2nd layer)
      • Warm, down jacket
      • Puffy jacket e.g. Primaloft — optional
      • Jacket with a good hood – windproof, waterproof and breathable, e.g. Gore-Tex or comparable
      • Soft-shell trousers – strong and light material that dries quickly
      • Rain pants – windproof, waterproof and breathable — full raingear is mandatory in Iceland, poncho is not useful because of wind
      • Socks – wool or synthetic
      • Change of clothes for wearing in the hut
      • Sunhat
      • Wool hat
      • Sturdy hiking boots – waterproof with good ankle support
      • River crossing shoes – walking sandals or old running shoes with a good grip are a good choice, along with a pair of warm socks or neoprene socks
      • Comfortable shoes for the camp
      • Quick dry towel – lightweight and packable
      • Swimwear if you want to bathe in the hot geothermal pool in Landmannalaugar
      • Toiletries (sunscreen, hand sanitizer, bug spray, etc.)
      • Water bottle or hydration bladder (2L capacity)
      • Lunch box
      • Pocket knife
      • Aperitif or other heart-warming spirits – liquor laws in Iceland prohibit the sale of alcohol, so having a thermos flask to share with your fellow travelers in front of the campfire can be the crowning of a good day — optional
      • Headlamp or flashlight
      • Sunglasses
      • Earplugs
      • Portable power bank
      • Dry-bags for electronics and extra clothing — optional
      • Camera — optional (but recommended)

Dress comfortably and for the weather in warm clothes you can move in. Iceland is home to infamously unpredictable weather, so you need to be prepared with the right gear.

There is a limited space on the luggage trailer, so try to pack light out of consideration to other passengers on the tour and use a a waterproof duffel bag which is easier to store. If you have extra luggage that you would like to leave, we recommend storing luggage at the BSI Bus terminal (fees apply) or another luggage storage space in Reykjavik.

  • Group sizes and pricing

      • For this hiking tour of the classic Laugavegur Trail, the usual client-to-guide ratio is 16:1.
      • It takes a minimum of 6 people for this tour to operate. The maximum group size is set at 16 participants.

Hiking the classic Laugavegur Trail can be arranged for larger groups. Contact us to make arrangements.

    Min. age requirements

      • If you are older than 16, you’re good to go.
      • Minors older than 14 may join the hike on a case-by-case basis, but must be in the presence of a parent or legal guardian.

If your group has hikers under the age of 16, contact us prior to booking to make arrangements.

  • Since you’ll be staying at mountain huts with dormitory-style rooms, a single occupancy room is not available on this Laugavegur Trail hiking tour.

If you are an individual traveler, you are more than welcome to join the group! The guide will be adding travelers until the minimum group size to confirm the trip can be guaranteed. There are no supplements to individual travelers, as they will share a room.

  • To get to this Laugavegur Trail tours, most people fly into Keflavík International Airport (KEF). From there, it’s best to hop on a shuttle to Reykjavik, or you can take a taxi. It takes about 45 minutes to reach Reykjavik.

It is recommended to arrive at least one day before the tour. If you’re flying in from the U.S. or will be landing early (4-6:30 am), you should be able to join the tour, but some risks would follow (i.e., if the flight gets delayed) and could miss out on the tour. This is, therefore, not recommended! Accommodation for the night prior to the tour is at your arrangement.

You will meet your guide at 6:30 a.m. at the BSI Bus Terminal in Reykjavik and begin your journey to into Iceland’s wilderness!
