Tucked away in New Hampshire with Rattlesnake Mountain as its backdrop, Rumney offers some of the finest rock climbing in the Northeast. The crags have grades from 5.3 to 5.15a, so you’ll find a route for every level of climber. Plus, those grades all have quality climbs associated with them. But it’s not just the massive amounts of routes that are a draw to the area, it’s the rock itself. Schist has a striking, woodgrain-like quality to it, adding to the already special allure of Rumney climbing. Find out more about one of the best climbing destinations in the US from Aaron Gerry, an avid climber, adventurer and traveler.

Great day rock climbing in Rumney with kids!
andyroebuc (source: TripAdvisor)

Alex guided a day trip for my son and his friend in Rumney NH for some top rope climbing and bouldering. The kids had the best day, exploring climbs and learning technique from Alex, but mostly just having fun on a beautiful spring day. Alex is a superlative guide, teacher and outdoorsman- cannot recommend him enough.

Fantastic outdoor guides!

I had a fantastic time rock climbing with Mooney Mountain Guides and would absolutely go again, in a heartbeat. I warmly recommend them to anyone looking for a fun, well-organized, exciting, safe, educational outdoor adventure.

I went on a guided trip with Alex, the owner, at Rumney for a full day. Alex was very responsive throughout the scheduling process and the entire trip was exceptionally well organized. I appreciated that Alex took the time to inquire about my rock climbing experience/goals/likes & dislikes, and then structured the day based on that. He was a very knowledgeable, patient, supportive, and kind instructor and I definitely learned a lot on the trip, not to mention had a wonderful time spending the day in beautiful autumn New Hampshire.

If you’re thinking about signing up for a trip, do it! You’ll have a blast and make some great memories.

great rock climbing

Great time doing a day of rock climbing @ Rumney. Alex did great work sizing up our group, finding appropriate level climbs to push us but not break us, and keeping the group safe throughout the day. Wonderful to have someone able to lead some more complicated climbs for us to the top rope. I’d happily return and hope to in the Spring!

Things to know

  • 57hours is committed to providing safe outdoor adventure experiences. We require all guides using our platform to have a COVID-19 safety plan and to make the details of that plan accessible to travelers. In most cases, group sizes will be reduced, guides will avoid overcrowded locations, and other safety measures will be met depending on the location and activity.

We also expect clients to respect local regulations and take measures to protect themselves, guides and the communities they’re travelling to. For more information on COVID-19 measures in Rumney, please refer to the Official New Hampshire State website.

Please contact us if you have any questions or require further information. We are happy to provide you with the most up-to-date information!

  • What you get in this adventure:

    • An experienced, local rock-climbing guide with extensive knowledge of the area
    • A half or full day of rock climbing
    • All technical climbing gear

    What’s not included:

    • Transportation
    • Accommodations
    • Food and snacks
    • $17.50 per day park fee. NC State Parks charge $35.00 per day for commercial climbing access. Your guide splits this expense with you.
  • If you can climb a ladder, you’re good to go. Being in good shape is always a plus but far from necessary. Rock climbing is all about using good movement technique rather than muscling up a cliff using brute strength. So don’t let your perceived lack of strength keep you away from rock climbing — you’ve got what it takes.

  • No prior experience is necessary. Whether you’ve never donned a harness or you’re a seasoned climber, a guide will help you meet your individual objectives. Above all, your instructor’s number one priority is your safety.

  • All technical climbing equipment will be provided by your guiding service. However, if you have your own gear, feel free to bring it. You’ll need:

    • Helmet
    • Harness with a locking carabiner, belay device, and chalk bag
    • Ropes
    • Rock shoes (included in the price, but we recommend bringing your own if you have them)
    • Climbing hardware (quickdraws, cam devices, stoppers, etc.)

Here’s a list of the equipment we suggest you bring:

    • Day pack large enough to carry all the items listed (around a 40L bag)
    • Water bottle
    • Food you can eat on-the-go
    • Toiletries (sunscreen, bug spray, toilet paper, etc.)
    • Sunglasses
    • Camera — optional

Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.

  • Group sizes and prices:

    • The group size for these private climbs are usually between 1–4 people with one guide.
    • Costs per person decrease as the group grows for private tours, so it’s the perfect opportunity to climb with friends and family.
    • Climbing days can be arranged for bigger groups. Contact us prior to booking.

    Min. age requirements:

    • If you are older than 18, you’re good to go.
    • Minors younger than 18 may be permitted to climb on a case-by-case basis, but must be in the presence of a parent or legal guardian.

If your group has climbers under the age of 18, contact us prior to booking to make arrangements.

  • The closest airport is in Lebanon, NH (LEB), but as it’s New England, most everything is seemingly a stone’s throw away. Portland, ME is 97 miles away and the closest major airport, Portland International Jetport. From NYC, Rumney is about a five hour drive, and about two hours away from Boston.

The exact climbing spot will be discussed after the booking as guides make that decision after considering the skill level of the group and factors such as crag traffic and weather.

  • Day Trips Cancellations
Fully refundable within the initial 48 hours from booking, unless the trip date is less than 7 days from the time of the booking.
Cancellations up to 7 days prior to the trip date are refundable 100%.
Cancellations within 7 days prior to the trip date are non-refundable.
