DISCOVER THE TREKKING CAPITAL OF ARGENTINA

Far from the cosmopolitan atmosphere of Buenos Aires, southern Argentina is an area of exceptional natural beauty. Nowhere is this more evident than on the classic hiking trails of Patagonia.

This multi-day backpacking journey around El Chaltén will take you through the majestic bucket list sites of the Southern Patagonian Icefield and Los Glaciares National Park.

Witness the striking, cloud-piercing peaks of Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy, where colossal icebergs crash into the glacial lakes below with a thunderous splash.

Mount Fitz Roy is a mountain massif in Patagonia, on the border between Argentina and Chile

As you pass through the vibrant landscapes surrounding the massifs of Patagonia, you’ll encounter countless animals unique to this part of the world.

These diverse ecosystems are home to many different species of flamingos, condors, guanacos, huemul (endangered Andean deer), pumas, foxes, and the rabbit-like viscacha.

Landscapes for every taste

Following pathways across mountains, valleys, and forests, you’ll explore all the hidden gems of southern Argentina, such as the ethereal Laguna Torre and the rocky vantage point of Mirador del Maestri.

Rocks dappled with red and green hues; glaciers streaked with ribbons of aquamarine; shimmering turquoise lakes set against the sun-kissed walls of Fitz Roy—these astonishing trails will take you on a hiking journey bursting with color!

SOUTHERN PATAGONIAN ICEFIELD

Even in person, it’s hard to understand the sheer scale of the Southern Patagonian Icefield! It is the largest of the South American icefields, stretching over 350 km/217 miles, and one of the largest non-polar glaciers on Earth.

LENGA FOREST

Lenga forests provide a habitat for many animals—here you might spot Magellanic woodpeckers, parakeets, and even pumas that are known to roam the area. After crossing several small streams, you’ll arrive at a lush valley that fills with daisies in the springtime.

LAGUNA TORRE

This is another classic you cannot miss—a site of majestic mountains and glaciers. The nearby Cerro Torre massif is one of the most extraordinary climbs in the world.

“Julian is the best guide we have had to date.

After backcountry trips ranging from New Zealand to Norway we have seen a lot and Julian put together a terrific trip for Patagonia. We spent 4 nights and 5 days in the El Chalten backcountry lucking into near perfect weather with sun and mild winds.

This was a family trip with 6 of us so we did not technical climb but did glacier trek and reached many of the hardest to hike points in the range area. As a bonus, we also learned a lot on the geology and fauna of the area while we rested as Julian explained in detail how this remote area came about.

The private campgrounds were well run, the food was terrific and we even had wine and champagne available for New Years. I heartily recommend Julian as your guide to anyone including those like us on a family trip to those looking to summit Poincenot or Fitz Roy.

You will also quickly learn he is the unofficial \””Mayor of El Chalten\”” because everyone in the backcountry and around town knows him.

Lastly, congrats to Julian who learned he earned a scholarship for an advanced avalanche forecasting course taught in Alaska later this year. Might be enlisting him for some backcountry skiing soon.”
