  • Some ski tours stay put on one mountain. This one doesn't sit still for 10 days. We start among Durmitor's limestone giants, move through the Moračke Mountains and Sinjajevina, then finish deep in the Accursed Mountains, where Montenegro, Kosovo, and Albania share a border on a single ridge. Terrain ranges from mellow forest skinning to steeper alpine faces, adapted daily to snow, weather, and the group's ability. Along the way, hotel stays trade off with remote mountain huts, and a homemade lunch with a local family in Lipovo breaks up the routine. Exact objectives shift with conditions, but the itinerary's spine, five ranges, three countries, stays the same.

    • Arrive in Žabljak—transfers are arranged from Podgorica, Tivat, Tirana, or Dubrovnik airports. After settling in at our hotel, we’ll gather for a welcome dinner, check equipment, review mountain conditions, and go over the days ahead. Tonight is about meeting the group and getting fired up for the adventure.

      Meals: Dinner
      Accommodation: Hotel Zlatni Bor, Žabljak

    • We kick things off with our first ski tour in Durmitor, heading for Savin Kuk. After a short transfer, we find our rhythm on the snow—today is all about dialing in our pace and getting comfortable with the conditions. Plenty of options for ascent and descent let us match the run to everyone’s experience. We end the day back at our mountain hotel to refuel and rest up.

      Meals: Breakfast, dinner

      Elevation: 800–1,200 m (2,600–3,900 ft)

      Carrying skis Balkans
    • We return to Durmitor and set out towards Šljeme, approaching from the eastern side for a fresh take on this iconic region. Skier downhill Balkans
    • We move on to the Moračke Mountains, leaving Žabljak for a new landscape in central Montenegro. Today’s objectives are flexible—guided by conditions and our energy, we chase fresh lines on peaks like Mali Žurim or Veliki Žurim. Afterwards, we transfer to Kolašin, settling into our next hotel to unwind.

      Hut exterior skiers Balkans
    • We head to Gornje Lipovo village to explore Sinjajevina, skinning through silent beech forests and climbing wide open slopes around Torna. The day can go bigger or mellower depending on the group, and we’re treated to a homemade lunch with a local family—a proper taste of Montenegrin hospitality. Afterward, it’s back to our Kolašin base for a well-earned dinner.

    • Today we ski tour straight out the door into the Accursed Mountains, heading for the remote Maja Rops and skirting the Kosovo border. After another big day, we’re back to the huts for rest and dinner.

    • Skiing in the Balkans calls for a good level of physical fitness and confident skiing ability. You should be comfortable on red runs and in variable snow conditions; previous ski touring experience helps but isn’t mandatory, since the itinerary adapts to the group.

Most touring days involve 800-1,400 m (2,600-4,600 ft) of elevation gain and 5-15 km (3-9 mi) of travel, with 5-7 hours spent in the mountains. Expect several consecutive days of physical activity, and some steeper terrain where boot crampons and an ice axe come into play.

We recommend starting focused training 6-8 weeks before the trip. Regular hiking, running, cycling, or stair climbing builds the aerobic base for long touring days, and longer endurance sessions of 2-4 hours (ideally with elevation gain) alongside leg and core work like squats, lunges, and step-ups round out preparation.

The best prep, though, is ski touring itself: aim to be comfortable with 1,000 m (3,300 ft) of elevation gain in a day while still skiing safely and in control on the way down.
