  • This 4-day guided hut adventure takes us into Francie's Cabin, Colorado's most celebrated backcountry hut, perched at 11,264 feet (3,433 m) in the Crystal Basin just south of Breckenridge. Each morning, we’ll go on tailored hikes through some of Summit County's finest high-alpine terrain, from wildflower-lined lake trails to a summit push on 13,852-foot (4,222 m) Crystal Peak. We cook and eat together, wind down in the wood-burning sauna, and fall asleep to the quiet of the mountains. With all meals, guides, cabin use, and even gratuity included, the only thing to worry about is what to put in the journal.

    • You’ll meet the guides at the Spruce Creek Trailhead just south of Breckenridge and set off on the 1.6- to 2.2-mile (2.6 to 3.5 km) hike up to Francie’s Cabin, depending on the route. At 11,264 feet (3,433 m), the Crystal Basin opens up around us: a landscape of alpine wildflowers, big skies, and the Ten Mile Range laid out in full. We get settled in, explore the cabin and the surrounding terrain, and then come together to prepare the first dinner as a group. The evening ends in the wood-burning sauna, a proper welcome to the mountains.

      Meals: Dinner, trail snacks
      Hiking: 1.6–2.2 mi (2.6–3.5 km)
      Elevation: +1,300 ft (+400 m)
      Accommodation: Francie’s Cabin, Crystal Basin

      Wildflowers in Colorado
    • After breakfast, the guides lead us on the day’s selected hike. Options include Crystal Lakes, the Wheeler Trail, the Spruce Creek Loop, or another route based on conditions and the group’s energy. The Crystal Basin sits above treeline, putting wildflower meadows, granite ridgelines, and pristine high-altitude lakes within easy reach. We return to the cabin mid-afternoon for a snack, then spend the remaining hours exploring at our own pace before gathering again for a group dinner.

      Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks
      Accommodation: Francie’s Cabin, Crystal Basin

      Colorado chill on a lake
    • We make an early start for Crystal Peak (13,852 ft / 4,222 m), or another summit objective at our guides’ discretion, depending on conditions. The ascent gains significant elevation from the cabin, with sweeping views across Summit County and the Tenmile Range as the reward. Guides pack trail lunches for the climb. The full group reconvenes at the cabin in the afternoon, and the last evening together is a proper send-off: final group dinner, stories from the trail, and a few last hours in the mountains.

      Meals: Breakfast, trail lunch, dinner
Hiking: 4 mi (6.4 km) round trip to Crystal Peak summit
      Elevation: +2,600 ft (+790 m) / -2,600 ft (-790 m) for Crystal Peak
      Accommodation: Francie’s Cabin, Crystal Basin

      Colorado couple of hikers
    • After a final breakfast together, we clean up the cabin and pack out by the 11:00 AM departure, hiking back down to the Spruce Creek Trailhead. The same 1.6 to 2.2 miles (2.6 to 3.5 km) we came in on. Somehow it always feels shorter on the way back.

      Meals: Breakfast
      Hiking: 1.6–2.2 mi (2.6–3.5 km)
